MSI 3.1 seems to be in heavy development and its KB seems to be quite fluid these times. :(

apart from them, you can at least doublecheck the digital signature of the downloaded file. is it okay?

one more thing. MS Malware Romover got updated yesterday. the KB article says it could hang in some cases. it does not explicitly say what happens when/if some file was being analyzed at that time. that might be your case.

make sure your MSI engine is up-to-date,
copy the MSI file to a local drive that is not a SUBSTed one,

Hi Johannes!

Ye ;-) Especially if you have to uninstall an MSI-enabled beta to
 install another MSI-enabled beta *g*

Well, that won't happen anymore I guess... But here the WI mechanism is
quite nice. If you update first all files are copied and if there are files
deleted from the installation, these are deleted from the disk.

So a minimum of file operations is needed.

Surely, didn't know you are comfortable enough in the registry to find
your way around and rename entries. Instead of renaming you could as
easily and with adverse effects have hit Del.

BTW, read that tip a few weeks ago, if you want to get rid of all the
MS patch entries in the uninstaller window, you can delete the
packages and then try to uninstall them. Windows can't find the
necessary info and will ask you to delete the entry itself. This
should also work, I think, if you move uninstall info somewhere else.

Caveat: Don't try this at home, kids! And don't hold me responsible if
your system doesn't do what it should afterwards.

All these nasty workarounds for something that an installer is
supposed to do... Alas, this is an extremely typical example of the
 Windows Installer engine.

Simply wrong as can be seen from the messages Maxim wrote about this
specific problem. It is *not* an error in MSI but a half-way
implementation by RITLabs, one of the things they wanted to find
during this beta.

For the people that don't get it yet: I hate MSI installers.

Thanks for the info, don't know how I could have lived without it.

They always tend to corrupt themselves, asking for the .msi file at
the most unexpected moments, failing to reinstall, uninstall or
upgrade software for any number of extremely technical reasons. It
always requires heavy registry editing to totally get rid of them,
so can attempt to reinstall a damaged software package.

Sorry, but (and I usually am not a big fan of MS' software) I've yet
to see a problem with MSI. Had much more trouble with other
installers, Ghost for example.

Know what you mean, had the same decision dilemma. that's why I asked
for a more informative entry by RITLabs.

In my set-up the first TB entry in the software uninstall window was
the old one, as was reflected in RegCleaner. So, it was the first
entry I chose.

The worst thing that could happen to you is that you clear the wrong
one and have to find the uninstaller info manually. I am not sure but
think a re-run of the installer with the option Repair chosen should
bring back the correct entry. Be sure to delete the remaining, wrong
entry before the re-run.
