When I switched from classic windows appearance to XP mode on the 
desktop, then the buttons being on and off  is much clearer in the 
message composition window's on the bottom tool bar. When depressed, 
an option button turns a red-orange color and is easy to see.

Those are how my buttons appeared in the Classic Windows mode in Win 
XP.  They change color dramatically when depressed in the Win XP mode 
set on the desktop.
