2002-06-29 Thread Miguel A. Urech

Hello John,

And why they immigrate - mainly economic reasons I would surmise.

And actually survival reasons. There is people out there dying of
hunger every minute. A few days ago I saw someone on TV saying: The
whole world was shocked by the Sep. 11th events and the number of
people killed. Well, ten times more people die of hunger *every day*
and we just don't pay any attention.

In Australia we have a similar problem.

And don't forget about European Union. Immigration was the main issue
at the last EU Counsel just one week ago

You have to set up white lists and black lists though. Check it

might have a fixed connection to the internet.

Hey John,

My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60q) Personal
to write [EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
on Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 1:34:57 AM.

JP I tried the others mentioned here - all seemed a bit buggy, or
JP overloaded with features, and stopped working from time to time.
JP Mail Direct is very simple to set up, and comes with default IP
JP addresses to enable mail sending, thus overcoming your ISP
JP blocking ports 25 or 53 (at least I hope so!)

If you connect via an ISP like NetZero that blocks port 25, the only
way to overcome it would be to have the SMTP send go to a different
port. That would require a host that is *not* NetZero attached that
is listening to the alternate port for SMTP traffic. Just having a
SMTP server on your workstation will not get around the block.

TLS/SSL connection bug.

2002-06-29 Thread Ralf van der Enden

Hello

I think I've found a bug in The Bat!. I've setup my QPopper (pop3
proggy for linux) to support TLS/SSL. The private key and certificate
I generated seem fine. If I configure MS Outlook Express for TLS/SSL
everything works fine. QPopper log doesn't show any weird stuff. But,
when I setup The Bat 1.60k or 1.60q for TLS/SSL right before the
certificate is validated it drops the connection.

Log from QPopper when I use MS Outlook Express:
Jun 28 19:38:03 gateway qpopper[25964]: (v4.0.4) TLSv1/SSLv3 handshake with client at

Jun 29 14:44:20 gateway qpopper[4372]: I/O Error

I think it has something to do with the ciphers TB! is using.

Any ideas?

The same problem happens on the message list when resizing. The only

You do this by making TB! not attempt a connection whenever you're not
online.

Go to menu - Options/Network and Administration

Enable the following options:

- - 'Dial Up Connection' - and choose the relevant one from your list if
necessary.

- - 'No automatic dial for periodic checking'

- - 'Use an existing dialup connection (if any)'

The registry is illustrated in a folder tree type pattern.

The part I most commonly edit is

HKey_Current_User/Software. Here, a lot of your applications settings
are stored. You can safely make changes without hosing your system
since you're usually making changes to an applications settings.

A lot of TB!'s registry entries are in a readable format.

Go to HKey_Current_User/Software/RIT/The Bat!

Have a look at the settings there. Don't be scared. :-) Take a good
hard look and you'll see that a lot of the settings make sense and
aren't all cryptic hex codes.

The 1 and 0 values usually represent on and off switches.

ridiculous for me to try and estimate the size of Usenet's user base,
I can say that there are certainly a lot of people out there who use
it, and I've gotten a lot of knowledge from those people.

One thing I like about Usenet is that you don't have to deal with
subscribing and un-subscribing and confirming and so on. If you have a
spur-of-the-moment thought, you can find the newsgroup it belongs in,
and post it there that very second. Replies will soon follow. Another
thing I like is that it's easier to be totally anonymous with
newsgroups, which I think is important for users in regard to
unbridled flow of opinions and information, without any fear of some
nut job out there retaliating at the author in some way.

Here's the thing about TheBat!: I have been using Agent exclusively
for reading news ever since I began- over seven years ago. For me,
it's hard to imagine TheBat! performing for me an any way that I could
fully appreciate. The writers of Agent made something functionally
perfect for what it is intended to do. A new system of reading news
and downloading binaries from Usenet would have to be pretty darn
perfect for me to find it worthwhile to get used to.

If you're serious, get acquainted with regedit's export function.
Before changing anything in the TB! configuration, export the rit key
to file by highlighting the rit key ('folder') and then going to
File/Export.

If you wish to restore the old settings, then just double click the
exported file which will replace the settings with the exported ones.

Also, exit TB! before manually making registry changes to the TB!
configuration, then restart TB!.

I tried Postcast some time ago, but rejected it because it didn't
allow me to use CC. Most of my work emails have a main recipient (TO)

from the postcast HELP file:
PostCast Server is a free server program
that enables you to send messages directly from your computer. This
program is used for sending newsletters, distributing messages to
different mailing lists, sending notifications to your customers, as
well as for sending individual messages. You can use it instead of the
SMTP server of your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

I got it setup and tested in under 15 minutes ( cablemodem
connection;), sent an email from one account to the other, with local
delivery unchecked. I LIKE IT! now, as to CC and BCc, I don't know,
someone mentioned that this program doesn't support that. iI send out
a weekly blurb Bcc, so I will have to see about that. from the
Postcast HELP file again:

If you enter addresses in the ‘BCC’ field of
the message, the recipient cannot see the addresses from the list as
when they are entered in the ‘CC’ and ‘To’ fields. In order for a
message to reach its destination at all and for the server to accept
it, it is necessary to enter some arbitrary value in the ‘To’ field.
This value will be the same for all recipients and thus, if you enter,
for instance, ‘[EMAIL PROTECTED]’, every message recipient will
see that address where his/her personal address should be. As in the
previous case, the message is not personally addressed to the
recipient, which can be seen at first glance.

When the server, on which the mailbox indicated by one of the
addresses from your list is located, accepts such a message, it might
identify it as SPAM. Mechanisms used for blacklisting the persons who
send SPAM are almost completely automated (of course, everything
depends on the administrator and the software installed on the
server). Your message contains sufficient data about you. Losing the
account with your ISP is just one of the measures that could be
applied.

Lost Windows Task Bar

2002-06-29 Thread Gene Brown

After reinstalling The Bat! following a major hard drive disaster, I
discovered that when TB loads, I lose my Windows Task Bar (the bar
along the bottom of the screen that shows what programs are open or
loaded). If I minimize TB from the main screen then restore it, it
comes back with the bar in place, but if I minimize from an edit
screen, that screen just disappears into a black hole. I have to then
minimize the main screen and restore it in order to again restore the
edit screen. (Am I being clear on what happens?)

I've tried reinstalling The Bat! but that didn't help. No other
programs show this same behavior. I've used TB through many versions
over several years and never had this problem until now. Any ideas?

Not a clue why this happens, TB! pundits here may give you a answer to
that but as a temporary solution, have you tried minimizing TB! to
tray instead of taskbar?

I'm about to reign in the general OT'ness of the UDL right now. This
one seems like a good place to start. It's the exactly the kind of
issue we originally formulated TBOT for.

Please can this topic (and the one about immigration and mobile
 phones) be taken to TBOT?

Is TBOT still alive? Last post I had was 03 June.

It was one of Carsten's original recursive templates. I'll give you
the link to the original:
http://www.mail-archive.com/tbtech@thebat.dutaint.com/msg01200.html

There are a few versions floating around which do some additional
things, but they're all based on Carsten's original above.
1. Put each paragraph in it's own box.
   http://www.mail-archive.com/tbtech@thebat.dutaint.com/msg01999.html

2. Automatically wrap and boxquote (note, you'll have to read the
whole thread to get it to work).
   http://www.mail-archive.com/tbtech@thebat.dutaint.com/msg01537.html

3. Sorry, that's all I could find in a quick search.
