Re[2]: Backup question revisited
Hi Allie, As far as i can tell, no errors were displayed when doing the backup, however, since i use a screen reader that produses the screen contents in speech and braille, and since the screen is updating so fast, it may very well be that i've missed something along the way. Do the errors display in a dialog or do they just flicker by whilst the process is going on? -- /Krister Current version is 1.62r | "Using TBUDL" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I moved my mother's TB from a Win95 machine to WinXP Home last month. Step 1: Export HKCU / Software / RIT into the TB directory intoo a file tb.reg. Step 2: Zip the whole "The Bat!" directory. It is a good idea to run a Purge & Compress All Folders first - saved some 7MB (about 50%). Step 3: Unzip the whole zip file into the folder structre of the new computer. There is no need to create a "The Bat!" directory first, as this is part of you zip file. Step 4: Run the tb.reg in order to get the key imported into your registry. Step 5: Run TB. Everything should be as it was before. Of course, this method requires that you use the same drive and paths. -- Cheers, Thomas. Moderator der deutschen The Bat! Beginner Liste. Tweaking the X-Mailer line internally
Hello tbudl'ers, Further to my post on the TWEAK, please, if you try this, take the ORIGINAL copy of the unmodified executable [thebat.exe] and rename it to [thebat_orig.exe] so that you have a working original to go back to. The modified file (X-Mailer changed) needs to be called [thebat.exe] for everything to work correctly. This is from actual experience with trying to run it as a different filename. It doesn't correspond with any of the registry entries and causes all kinds of problems when run as a different file name - trust me! OK, once again, don't try this unless you know what you are doing. You are messing about with the actual program code at the heart of TB! Also, I suggest you copy back the original copy of the executable before upgrading your TB! I have no idea whether the modified file may cause problems during an upgrade for version. Remember, this is a free suggestion and experimental at best. If you are not experiencing lost mails due to the X-Header (I am!) do not even consider doing the modification. This is strictly a work-around for this one issue, which I hope the developers will address in a future version, or at least SUE the companies who are creating this mess. Tweaking the X-Mailer line internally
Hello Bat'ters, I'll start off with the following, which is to be taken very seriously! **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** === Do not try this unless you know what you are doing!! === **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** The poster specifically disclaims any damage done to your system by employing this 'trick!!' If your BAT winds up with a broken wing, don't blame me! I asked for clarification, but none was forthcoming, so I dusted off and put my bell bottoms & Nehru jacket back on and dug into things a bit. I found the correct area of The Bat!'s executable on the first try and changed it (see X-Mailer entry above)! The text to search for is 'The Bat! (v1.62r)' [without the quotes] There are multiple locations with this text. Better to search to the hex offset below! Like I said, do this ONLY if you know what you are doing! I love UltraEdit!! :-) It makes 'hex-patching' so easy In [thebat.exe - 4.52 MB (4,742,480 bytes)] V1.62r it begins at Offset 0x3827a9. The only restriction is that whatever you change it to, it must be contained within the 17 characters of the original data string. I didn't try to expand the string length, and don't know what havoc that might cause to the executable. This reminds me of the old days of the Commodore 64, when I'd make custom CIA and kernel chips for people. Mine came up saying "This Commodore 64 piece of belongs to Spike!" Yes, I used to be quite a formidable 'script kiddie' back in my misspent youth! Ah, those were the glory days.. :-) -- Warmest tropical wishes, Spike Quote for the moment: "It is bad luck to be superstitious." /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign - Against HTML Mail \ / If it aint a webpage it shouldn't be HTML. Can't get mail
I'm having a problem getting mail today. It's weird. When I click Dispatch mail, the window appears, but just stays there. When I click Get Mail, the connection centre appears, it says: Status: Checking INBOX And just stays like that indefinitely. Elapsed says 00:01 and doesn't change. -- Best regards, Adam Current version is 1.62r | "Using TBUDL" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

This just encourages authors to put out executables with compression and/or encryption (such as with JPSoft's 4NT). Alternately, RITLabs could defeat that by checking to see if certain data fields have changed. Since I'm now using X-Ray to do some external pre-inbox filtering, I've also added filtering to change X-Mailer (and I've added a X-Ray line to the kludges - it's not forced upon me). -- Best regards, Bill Current version is 1.62r | "Using TBUDL" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Backup question revisited
Hi Bat! people, Sorry for the cross posting, but i figured someone somewhere might have an answer to this. I have just switched from a windows 98 machine to one with XP Pro, and i have made a backup of my TB settings using the built-in backup tool. When i made the backup, i chose to backup everything possible, that is my common folders, my accounts, (three) and my account and global options. When restoring, i only got to process one of three accounts and my common folders were missing. Pressing the key combo for scanning for lost folders gave the result that no folders were lost. What gives here? What's more, i don't have my quick templates anymore, but i have my folder and ab templates. How do i get my quick templates back? And the last question, what registry key should i look for and copy if my copy of TB is unregistered? I'd be greatful for any answer you could provide me with. Thanks much! -- /Krister Current version is 1.62r | "Using TBUDL" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
