Hello Allie,

Is there such a thing with TB!? The reason I wonder is because I have
trouble recalling anytime when only bug fixing occurs between versions.
Usually new features are being added. So there's never really a time
when you can say that a particular version contains features that
have all been tested for a long time and fully debugged.

You are probably right in regards to TB, that is probably why I am still
on 1.62i and didn't even jump to 1.62r. My stability meter (quite
subjective, BTW) hasn't advised this jump yet :)

Attachment problems with V2

2003-09-12 Thread Carlo Revelli
Hello

I discovered that there are 2 attachment problems with The Bat version 2.
They are making me crazy...
Note that I have a lot of different accounts.

1) OLD ACCOUNTS (CONVERTED IN THE PAST FROM .MSB FILES WITH THE BAT)
With version 1.62r, I have no problems and I can see these attachments.
But with version 2, I cannot even see their icons. This remind me an old
bug of version 1.XX that was solved in the past. This bug appeared when you:

- Changed account name via Account\Properties\Name
- Then when you click on any letter with attachment - attachment mark disappear and
you cannot access your attachment until you will change account name to
the original one and click on letter again.
For example, look at this header:
X-BAT-FILES: C:\PROGRAM FILES\THE BAT!\MAIL\nick\Attach\Plans2.doc

I can access this attachment with 1.62r even if the attachment is
anymore on this very old location (the original location).
But with version 2, I cannot see anymore it.

2) NEW ACCOUNTS
Here the problem is that the size of almost all my attachments
is now 0. I can see the icon of the documents but when I open
them, they are empty. I start again V1.62r (I renamed the EXE)
then I can open these attachments. The strange thing is that I
don't have this bug with all my accounts but only on someone.

I tried to open the same word document attached to a recent mail:

- When I open it with V1.62r, it works and the document is opened
at its real adress which is:
G:\Mes documents\mail\old (juin 02 - juil 03)\Attach\enregistrement.doc

- But when I try to open the same attachment with V2, I don't know
why it try to open my temp directory which is on another disk:
E:\temp\bat\1C1E9831.doc
And here obviously the document is not present.

Please help me because I really don't know how to solve.
Note also that there is apparently no relation between these 2 bugs at
the manner I store attachments. For some account, I keep attachment files
in a separate account and on other accounts they are inbodies. But the
2 bugs appear in all the case.

Thank you very much for your help

Carlo

Slow Downloading of Messages

2003-09-12 Thread Kim
Hi all,

For the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that it takes much, much
longer to download my messages with the Bat than usual. It's gotten so
bad that I assumed that it might be a problem with my mail server, and
not the Bat. However, today, after receiving a reply from the tech
support department of my mail server provider, and testing out the
info they sent to me, it seems that their servers are not the problem.
Now I'm not sure what to do.

The situation is this:

I always check my messages on the server before downloading them.
Getting the messages listed in Control Centre is not a problem. Those
list rather quickly, and seem to be nothing out of the ordinary.
However, when downloading those messages (and deleting them from the
server), I am experiencing very slow downloads, and 100% processor
usage. The 100% usage in itself wouldn't be that big a deal, except
that due to the slow downloads, my CPU is at 100% usage for several
minutes at a time, which causes the temperature of my laptop to rise
from about 48C to about 75C, until the download is done. After that,
the temperature returns to normal. I also tried this with another
e-mail program that I have on my computer (Pocomail), and discovered
the same problem occurs, and worse with Poco. I also tried downloading
several messages from a different mail server on a different account
(after letting the messages on that account build up to about 50 on
the server), and the download time was much faster with that one (it
was my ISP's mail server). Naturally then, I assumed that the problem
was with my mail server (This problem occurs on my main two e-mail
accounts, and both of those mail servers come from the same provider,
a service I pay for by the year). So I contacted their tech support. I
received a reply this morning, and was told that they tried connecting
to my mail server with Outlook Express and had no problems at all. I
honestly hadn't tried Outlook Express (because I hate it), but it is
on my computer, so I put this account in it, and downloaded the
messages on the server (36 messages total). The entire download
process for Outlook Express took about 10 seconds. The *same* download
process in the Bat took 2 minutes and 28 seconds. Now I'm wondering
what in the world is causing such a slowdown in the Bat. Could the
problem be with one of the settings in the Bat? Is there some setting
I can change to improve download speeds? This problem is annoying me
to no end (especially when I have like 100 messages on the server,
which take like 6 or 7 minutes to download). Why on earth would
Outlook Express be able to download messages so much faster? It just
doesn't make sense.

I am using version 2.00.6 (Personal Edition) of the Bat. I am running
Windows XP Home, and my laptop has a P4 1.8 ghz processor. I have a
cable Internet connection. I have my computer set up on a wireless
network, and use a router. This problem with slow downloads has only
been present for the last couple of weeks, so I don't think the
network or router is a problem. My husband who is also on the network
also uses the Bat and doesn't seem to have this issue, however, he
does not receive the volume of mail that I do, and the problem is
barely noticeable with less than 10 messages on the server (which is as
many as he gets on his machine at one time).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Allie

Wednesday, September 10, 2003, 7:53:11 AM, you wrote:

AM When I say the formatting is preserved, I mean that the line breaks are
AM preserved etc.

Agreed. That helps.

AM Try using the alternative editor. If you use it, while
AM composing, your message will be nicely wrapped at your editor defined
AM setting. In actual fact the text isn't wrapped at all and the recipient
AM receives unwrapped text. Now *that* is a gross disparity in perceived
AM formatting as opposed to what the recipient receives. No matter which
AM font your recipient uses, they'll never see the message the way you did
AM before hitting 'send'.

Yep, I've always hated that problem too. And it's not only confined to email
clients.

V I've had problems with this. And since a number of people reading my
V mail use HTML viewing, and therefore usually not Courier or other
V fixed-width fonts, I can't be guaranteed that anything I send them
V will look identical on their machine.

AM It need not look *identical* in the majority of instances.

Proportional fonts could accomplish that equally well, I suppose, if hard line
breaks were put in like in MicroEd. Plus they'd look better at my end.

AM For example, say I wish to split a quoted paragraph into two and reply
AM to each part separately. I reflow the paragraph, split it into two,
AM separate the parts so that I can insert my own text, reflow the second
AM part of the paragraph and then have the cursor in position to start
AM typing. With the use of a PowerPro macro, I achieve all of that with a
AM single keyboard macro triggered by hitting Alt-D.

Nice. I wish there were some way to do this in TB itself. I'm rather against the
idea of installing another piece of software.

AM For each signature template (for me these are kept as quick templates),
AM I include the '%issignature' macro. What this macro does, is to delete
AM all text below the signature delimiter in the editor, and replace it
AM with the output of the quick template. In effect, you delete one
AM signature and replace it with another. Remember that you can add
AM anything to the template, so often, doing this not only changes my
AM signature, but also changes my From name/address, whether the message
AM should be signed or not etc.

AM So I may typing a message and decide to change signatures, I then type
AM the quick template handle and then hit CTRL+spacebar. Voila .. new
AM signature appears.

Many thanks. I'll certainly use this now.

AM Quoting the clipboard contents quotes without quoting blank lines
AM between paragraphs.

AM Using the 'Paste as Quotation' option in the editor, leads to blank
AM lines between paragraphs being quoted.

Hmm..I never knew that. I've never used the paste from clipboard option, though,
but this will be good to keep in mind.

AM The blue button moves to the next and previous
AM message in the message list. The red buttons do the same, however the
AM previously viewed message is deleted.

Yes, I know that. What I meant is that it's never clear what 'next' and
'previous' mean in different contexts. Depending on how your messages are
sorted, they could mean anything. Delete and move to next could be disastrous
here, which is why I never keep the main window out of sight.

By the way, Eudora also supports viewing messages in two windows. If I recall
correctly, so does Outlook Express. It's nothing unusual in the TB.

V Interesting again. When you say virtual folder, you don't actually
V mean a folder somewhere in the account tree do you?

AM No. Though the ticker messages have been filtered to their various
AM folders, opening the ticker virtual folder,

What do you mean by opening the ticker virtual folder?

don't belong to any account, so the default account will be chosen.
And apparently, mailing list headers override AB templates.

All is fine. We have found the reason. You should have the TBUDL
folder belong to an account.

This arrow is used if you have group addresses in which you tell The Bat! to use a

If you have such a group address together with a specific template those groups will

String search within results (to achieve Boolean AND)

2003-09-12 Thread David R. Austen
Greetings,

Sometimes, when seeking a message, a search term I would use is just
too common, so a Boolean AND strategy is necessary.

I know I can search the results of a preliminary search by copying all

Is there a better way?

This posting violated the list rules regarding top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your message

actually request that you not do so on this list because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the top

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to which
you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to, and then

This is painful of course.

I also switched to the rich text viewer (could hardly afford it with a
name like that!), shut down started Bat! again, but still not
clickable!

This could likely be as a result of one of two things:

 - your inbox folder needs to be compressed

 - your antivirus programs mail checking is creating a slow down.

Thanks for your reply. My inbox folder is already compressed on a
regular basis, as I have it set to compress each time I close the Bat.
I did run compression in Maintenance just in case, but received the
report that it had nothing to do when running compression (since
those mailbox folders were already compressed). I do have Kaspersky
Antivirus running, and I know it scans my mail, however, if that's the
problem, why is it only causing a problem with these two e-mail
accounts, and not my other ones? I've had Kaspersky running for the
last two or three years, and this problem only started recently. What
else could it be?

Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for your reply. I ran Maintenance, but received the report that

trash set to empty each time I close the Bat as well. What else could

My strategy is to use the color group capability (Message / Colour
Group), and I also park such messages. I have defined a color group
called TIPS, which is of course the color group I choose.
Periodically I move those messages to a separate folder called TIPS
from TBUDL. Though I haven't done it yet, I should probably define
a Read Message filter and use that to do everything all at once.

(still canot make it work with the bat,yes I have tried kaspersky just

Seems to me if you go into msconf and 'kill' the task manger on bootup
and tell zonealarm to allow access all the time for the bat it will
work. I am also using netpal and cookiepal no problem with them. As
much as I have ben reading here about the bat 2.0 seems REAL
BUGGY!!! (like b.gates pushing his lateest O.S.)is it worth it or just
stay with 1.62 until the bugs are gone?? This is one of the GREATEST
e-mail programs ever (peguas just plain sucks) is there any way to get
it to work with hotmail accounts or am I just limited to using McAfee

I made a comment to that effect..that if these firewall problems went on any

you're referring to?

m Sorry, but you're leaving yourself open if you don't use at least a
m software firewall, even with a dial-up.

Open to the possibility - yes. Vulnerable - no, if your pattern of behavior is like
the following:

- You don't stay online very long: This is the primary reason DSL/Cable users
are at risk. If you're online for a long time you become a much more attractive
target. Even if scripts are used, your chances of being cracked are much less if
you're on dialup, simply because you may terminate your connection at any time
and have no fixed IP to attack. If you stay online for 8 hours at a time, then
sure you're at risk. How many dialup users do that though?

- You stay up to date with all security patches for your OS.

- You run a frequently updated antivirus.

- You take sensible precautions such as not opening suspicious attachments.

ABlaster/LovSan tells you.

Blaster and its variants spread initially via an email attachment. If you didn't
click on it you were safe. Infected hosts attempted to spread to other hosts
via a DCOM RPC vulnerability that MS had released a patch for a long time ago.
If you were up to date with the patches, there is no way a dialup user would
have been infected.

-Vishal

2003-09-12 Thread Robert Silver
Hello Spike,
Actually it depends on the digital sign used. If a thawte or
Verisign digital signature is used it means the sender took the
time to enter his/her password and send from his client. That is
the purpose of such devices. So long as it must be entered when the
email is sent and for each it should be valid and as such does
mean that the sender is legitimate and using proper keys. Now in
The bat I should think that would be even better. Unfortunately
there are those keyboard capture virus/trojans out there ,however, I
am pretty sure those would not work on the passwords entered for
Certs because not only the key presses are needed. Also the
mapping keys. The Bat should nicely handle that!
I have to say if every email was authenticated and every IP address
we would have a lot less hacker problems in general!
Imagine every IP traceable to a digital cert owner all traffic
accountable and thereby safer by Id-ing each and every IP address.
Firewalls could then handle abuse rather than waste time with it.
