Advantage of keeping them seperately:

o The message base itself is not so huge, making searching faster

o You can search in DOS/Windows for the file name and use (for example
open, copy etc) it without having to search through the TB database.

o When you open them from the message by double-clicking on the
attachment icon, the file name will be shown (as opposed some temp
file name like 3df545m.doc).

Advantage of keeping them in message body:

o That's where they belong. It don't want every attachment
(incredimail.gif) stored. Leave it in the message and I delete it if I
want, no extra files flying around.

SC> Do all accounts share the same attachment folder or is it by account
SC> or by folder?

One attachments folder per account.

SC> I assume if you store them separately that the original message has
SC> a pointer to the attachment?

Yes.

SC> What happens when you receive 2 attachments in separate messages
SC> that are named the same thing. Does one overwrite the other?

No. First attachment mypicture.jpg is stored under this name, the
second picture with the same name is stored as mypicture1.jpg. And
this defeats the whole purpose of the second advantage mentioned
above.

I used to store attachments seperately, but have since changed to
store them in message body. There was also another issue (don't know
whether it has been solved in the meantime): When you deleted the
message, the attachment was sometimes orphaned in the attachment
folder, filling it up over time. Another problem was with moving or
copying messages, the attachment should be moved/copied too (what if I
copy within the same account?).

Since I have no problems with huge tbb files (they don't corrupt, and
search is still very fast), I am happy with storing attachments in the
body. There is the one odd attachment per day that I want to use as a
file, I just right-click on the attachment and choose "save as" - this
way, I can also choose the directory I want and don't need to copy
from the attachment directory.

I used to keep mine separately, but got tired of going back and
deleting all the graphics files which came with html spam. I was
getting spam.gif, spam1.gif, spam2.gif, etc. Similar problem with
those pesky .msg files, and even all the .png files from tbbeta. I was
on a mailing list where some people had their .vcf files attached to
every post and those would stack up as well. And I can't tell you how
many copies of that blue sky with a few clouds background for Outlook
mail I would accumulate between housecleanings. I'm much happier now
that I have taken to keeping messages with attachments.

I should add that when I started with TB! I was certain that storing
separately was the way to go, and I did it that way for a long time.
If it wasn't for all that html spam I suppose I still would.

I keep mine separately. I don't know whether it's true, but my reason
is that I think they would be easier to retrieve from the backup file,
if necessary.

> Do all accounts share the same attachment folder or is it by account
> or by folder?

Each account has a separate Attachments folder. I've just looked in my
TB! directory--the path is The Bat!/MAIL/m.bull/Attach, and they are
all accessible, a separate file to each attachment, arranged
numerically/alphabetically.

> I assume if you store them separately that the original message has
> a pointer to the attachment?

The original message keeps its attachment icon. So, I can look in my
sister's folder in my m.bull account on TB!'s folder tree, and have
another look from there at her Retirement "honors" poem, without
having saved that attachment file in "My Documents" or wherever,
necessitating a search through one of my text editors/word processors.

To me it's the best of both worlds--attachment available through my
TB! folder for my sister, or, if I've saved it, through opening it in
a text editor. Further, even if I didn't save it and I remember what
she named it when she sent it to me, I can ask Word or Open Office to
look in C:/Program Files/The Bat!!/MAIL/m.bull/Attach, and retrieve it
to the word processor that way.

> What happens when you receive 2 attachments in separate messages

I don't know. I'll try an experiment with that, with some mails to
myself, and see if I can report back to you later on what happens.

You're welcome. However, others may know more about the mechanics of
this and the advantages/disadvantages than I do. :)

You have to use the cmdline function described in the thread on Google,
regsvr32 /s GoogleDesktopCantRemember.dll - make sure that TB is NOT
running when you do this. When you're done and you restart TB the plugin
will be automatically added (at least thats how it was here - how this

Brilliant! I managed to learn a few things about filter syntax along

I use a manual filter that writes the email to a file in unix mailbox
format, opens my text editor and then when the editor closes, imports it
back into the inbox. This format preserves the received date/time and
all headers.

The filter (below) writes the email to e:\my documents\temp\edit.txt,
then fires up a batch file d:\batch\editmsg.cmd with the parameter
personal (the name of the account that it is to import it back into).
The hotkey is Ctrl-Shift-Alt-E.

 TB! Message Filter
beginFilter
UID: [E7858CF0.01C4B812.395665F4.7EE60FC6]

RunExternal RunHidden CmdLine d:\5Cbatch\5Ceditmsg.cmd\20personal
IsManual
IsActive
IsHotkey
IsHotkeyOnly

IsSendQueue
endFilter

The editmsg.cmd fires up UltraEdit, and automatically loads a set of
macros that I have set up. If you use UltraEdit, I can send you a copy.
I use the macros to automatically link and break threading in TB!, and
change popfile classifications.

If you don't use UltraEdit, you will need to change the first line of
the batch file to reflect your editor of choice.

Alter/remove headers in received mail?

2005-05-12 Thread Allister Jenks
Hello TBUDLers,

I have PopFile marking my spam with a header which I then catch with a
TB! filter and send the way of the trash.

On the odd occasion where PopFile gives a false positive I simply drag
the email back to the inbox.

However, recently I wrote a new filter and while re-filtering the inbox
to apply the filter, all those false positives leapt back into the
trash! Fortunately I spotted this by checking the log.

How can I modify a received email's headers? Ideally, I would want to
mark the header in some way to avoid it being filtered as spam but still
show PopFile's original classification. Worst case, if I could just
remove the PopFile header it would at least stop the refilter problem.
