To my surprise, my .tbk backup file (using 4.1.11) was about 3 times as large as before. After I cleaned out and compressed the folders, it got back down to normal, but why would the backup not be automatically minimized? If the user doesn't realize that it's not minimized, the backups could waste a lot of space on the backup media.
