Unless TB! is configured to do it automatically, perhaps on exit.

 which of
course it wouldn't be since she moved it.

TF The message might still be there but hidden. With the SENT folder
TF highlighted, go to Folder / Browse Deleted Messages in the Main Menu.
TF You'll see all messages, including the ones that have been deleted or
TF move, those are in stike-out font. He can restore them by highlighting
TF the message and hitting the DEL key.

TF In order to delete messages from the folder, you have to purge and
TF compress. I do that regularly, but chances are your wife didn't.

Alas, that didn't work. The messages displayed in the SENT folder were exactly
as they were yesterday and no other messages were displayed when I selected the
SENT folder and chose BROWSE DELETED MESSAGES from the main menu. Because I had
never done what you suggested before, I tried it on my computer and it works
exactly as you said. Deleted messages showed up as being struck-out and could
be restored by hitting the DELETE key, counterintuitive though that may be.
And, as postulated by MFPA, the SENT folder is NOT configured to automatically
delete or compress or purge.

I have the MESSAGES.TBB file from her Carbonite backup of the SENT folder which
I'll try to restore today. If the backup file is also corrupted, Carbonite also
keeps earlier versions of everything it backs up so I should be able to retrieve
an earlier version if necessary.

I can think of no reason for all this trouble except that TB! is somehow broken
and the only solution for that (to my knowledge) is to re-install TB! but I'm
not sure if I can just simply re-install it over the existing TB!.
