Thanks for all the well detailed replies, I am happy to say I am now
able to read and write e-mail to my GMAIL account from within TB! I
set the GMAIL account to allow access to insecure apps, but I may try
and set it to OFF again and see if it is vital to connectivity. Thanks
again everyone!

As an aside, I am using an old V 5.8.10 TB!. I am quite happy with it
save for one thing that really bugs me. If I am reading a message in a
pre view pane and a new message arrives in that folder, I am
immediately slung out of it and the message is marked read. Does the
current version have this, to me, annoying trait?

All the best.

It certainly is possible. I only used the gmail website to create the
account in the first place and occasionaly for "website login
required" errors (see below). You need to look in the settings there and enable
POP.

In The Bat, just create an account like any other.

SMTP = smtp.gmail.com
   secure to regular (startTLS)
   port 587

POP =  pop.gmail.com
   secure to dedicated (TLS)
   port 995

Keep an eye on the account log. If your IP address for the actual
Internet connection changes, you get "website login required" errors.
That will probably happen the first time. Then just login at
www.gmail.com and logout again. Then your email client will work.

You might have to set "allow access for insecure apps" somewhere when
actually logged in to gmail in a web browser, but if this happens you
should only have to do it once.
