I  have  done  this  using  both  "default  applications" and the file
extensions  in  both "Settings" and even Cobtrol Panel. They stick for
a while, but then they get reset again. I'm not sure how long exactly,
but I think within one hour.

I  have  only  noticed it with PDFs, but wnen doing Google and similar
searches ti try find a solution, it happens with others.

I  never  double  click  on anything anyway, but it gets annoying when I
view   the   PDF   attachment  in  the mail I am about to send to make
sure  it  is  the right one and have to reset again. PDFs are the only
files  I  attach  directly.  I  put any others in a Zip or Rar so that
there is only one attachment per mail.

Try setting the association through Control Panel -> Default
applications - that's the only way to get the association to stick
with a program.

OK,  thanks  for the explanation re the GMAIL setting, I'll leave well
