I suspected this as most Councils are probably Outlook/Exchange users and no
one within the organisation probably considered anybody would be using
something else!

They would have saved it as a straight export/save from Outlook.

The only way to read would be to use Outlook.

RE: Secure E-mail again!

2014-02-06 Thread Tony Brookes
They may have specified port 587 for SSL, but for TLS the port should
be 465 as The Bat! automatically selects. This works fine with German
1und1, and it has done so for years, so I suggest you try that port
 too.

Port 587 is submission, and it uses either no encryption, or STARTTLS (SSL/TLS
might work, but usually doesn't). Port 465 is smtps, and it always uses SSL or
TLS.

Note that some Microsoft's programs incorrectly call STARTTLS just TLS.

 Jernej Simončič http://eternallybored.org/

Thanks Peter, thanks Jernej,

Unfortunately the plot thickens - none of the combinations of port settings,
TLS/STARTTLS/REGULAR dropdowns with or without 'Must use Secure Communications'
set behind this works with this provider in The Bat! For me.

I tried in Outlook and it works using the settings attached (also uploaded to
http://www.tonybro.com/Outlook.JPG as attachment was stripped last time).

I am at a loss on this one.

The closest I get is an error from The Bat! Saying 'Message not sent. Server
reply - must be authenticated'

I may be wrong, but I think the error message is telling you what the problem
is. What is your setting for Authentication?

Thanks MAU,

Authentication settings are as follows: -

'Perform SMTP Authentication (RFC 2554)' is ticked

Use Specific Settings is active with username and password

'Require secure authentication' is ticked

The Biometric elements are greyed out

'Use POP before SMTP authentication' is NOT ticked now, following Feli's
suggestion

It doesn't appear to be making a difference.

The same server response came back when I tried to my Gmail address (different).

As this works in Outlook I can only assume it is something strange in my Bat!

Note: Require secure authentication checkbox in SMTP Authentication
dialog changes which authentication protocol is used, but doesn't
affect the connection security - in most cases you'll leave that
checkbox blank; similarly, most servers only support Regular POP3

OK - problem is resolved but not in the usual way!

I had a test Virtual Machine running an Win8.1 and a V6 beta. This had
the 1and1 account set up as IMAP but I set the SMTP settings as I had
in my live V4 setup under Win7.

It worked perfectly!

I went back to my Win7 installation and updated it to V6 and it is
fine using the secure upload and download of mail.

There was obviously something strange in my V4 installation that was

Weird.

I am using 1and1 in the UK but they are German so have advised I will have to
switch to secure mail using SSL. I have followed the instructions but it still
won't authenticate SMTP even though I am using the Port specified of 587, not

POP is secured and working fine but I can't send. Can anyone see anything

  -- Ed

Ed,

Here's what I do as I have so many PDAs (Reviewer Tester!)...

I have my own domain which may mean things are slightly easier but I
forward all my incoming mail from my domain to a free service such as
Mail2Web. That gives me two instances of my mail - one at my domain
and one at the free POP or Exchange Push service. I then set the PC to
download from the domain and will always have a copy there but when on
the road or using/testing the PDAs I use the free POP service to
collect the mail and it then has no impact on my main domain base of
messages (including The Bat!).

If I send anything from the PDA, I just CC/BCC my normal address in so
it appears in the Inbox on the PC.

Naturally this works for me and depends on whether you can forward
e-mails to another source but it works for me.

The only other option is to move The Bat! to IMAP and use the Mail
client on the PDA in IMAP mode too. Can be a bit trickier though

Hope that helps

Re: Message Rules - Export?

2002-10-22 Thread Tony Brookes

Joseph N. recently typed,

JN If you focus on the rule name and Ctrl-C, you can copy the rules to
JN the clipboard, and then paste into any text-capable editor. However,
JN I don't know if any application other than TB! or other RITlabs
JN products will share the syntax enough to enable you to use the rules
JN somewhere else. But for copying some rules instead of the whole file
JN from one machine to another, it works fine.

Thanks,

The reason for wanting it is more for backup and using as a source for
another e-mail client. Syntax can't be used by other client but it's a
damn site easier reading a text file and doing a cut 'n' paste than
trying to grab info from the sorting office!

Cheers!

Expanded Tree view by default?

2002-09-13 Thread Tony Brookes

I view messages by reference in folders but all I see is the root
message and the plus sign indicating replies.

Is there any way I can force the view to be expanded by default?

I use the CTRL and right arrow key to get the folder expanded but it's
an extra and laborious process in busy folders.

Thanks,

LG Not by default, but you can use CTRL* (on the numerical keypad) to
LG expand all threads.

Thanks. I'll try that one - missed it in the help!

Time to get it put on the wishlist ;-)

Thanks,

RM Remove them? How? I only see an option to remove access to them.

You open Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Programs

On the left, there should be a facility to Add/Remove Windows
Components. Here there are options to remove IE, MSN, OE and
Messenger. Deselect by removing the tick box and away you go by
clicking Apply
