Re[2]: Leaving messages in inbox

2009-01-09 Thread Vili
JSL A long time ago there was a thread on the dangers of leaving messages
JSL in the inbox. Unfortunately I no longer remember exactly what the
JSL danger was. I searched the archives for the subject line above but
JSL found nothing explaining the problem. Does anybody remember?
RO Basically it comes to this.
RO The Inbox is a high traffic folder: every message that enters your
RO message base first arrives in the Inbox, moving and deleting
RO (automatically and manually) means another mutation of your Inbox.
RO Due to these multiple mutations it's easy for things to go awry.
RO There's your first reason not to use the Inbox for permanent storage.
RO When your Inbox is large it's more difficult to mutate it then when
RO it's small, so using the Inbox for permanent storage makes it more
RO likely for things to go awry.
RO Of course executing compress and purge daily minimises the chance that
RO things go bad.
RO I've never had a corrupt Inbox, so I've never been bitten, but in the
RO past the issue came up regularly. But why use a mail client with an
RO extensive filtering engine like TB when you store everything in the
RO Inbox.

I totally agree with every word Roelof wrote. My addition: the only way I
saw corrupted Inboxes (I am a TB distributor) that people used the
Compress at exit. When I send the registration keys to users, this is
the information (in brief) I send them in the text of the mail before
the actual reg. code:

- switch off the Compress at exit forj all Inboxes, this is how you can
do it

- make manual compress of Inboxes at every two weeks, a month, based
on your email load

(I compress my folders every Sunday)

Hello Martin,

C I'm just wondering if there is a printable manual available?
 PDF manual for TB:
 http://www.thebat.hu/Download/The_batv4018MANUAL.pdf
MS Wouldn't have harmed to mention what language that document is
MS in...would've saved the internet some megabytes of transferred data I
MS guess.
MS For the record: the above document is NOT english...

I dont see that there was a request for the _English_ manual. There
was a request for a _printable manual_ for TB.

Anyway, sorry for the joke. I just wanted to point out that there
is/are printable manual(s) out there for TB, it would be time to make
an English one, too.

Let's write an English manual for The Bat! that is suitable for printing

2008-11-30 Thread Vili
Ok, I joked, but also, I am willing to participate in a project where
we put together an English PDF manual. But I cannot do it alone. This
is what I suggest:

- first we simply import the CHM into HelpManual (I tried it, works,
some formatting does not come over). Advantage of HM is that we can
create PDF very easily, etc. Ok, so at this point we have a PDF v0.

- some people go over it and decide which parts to change, what extra
parts to write

- those people decide who corrects/writes those parts

- everybody does his job by the deadline the people agree

- the editor/dictator :) goes over the parts and make the final
corrections. If the issue is a serious one, he discusses it with the
author. Final word is always the editor's.

- we make a PDF then that is released. This is when people who are not
actively included in the project can make suggestions, that could be
included in PDF manual v2.

So, who are willing to put some time into it? I estimate like ca. 40
hrs/person or little more. Project would take until the end of
January, so it can be spread over two months, no reason to hurry
during December.

I am willing to do the HM editing, suggesting a structure, make the
PDF v0. I can supply the editor with HM. I wont be editor. However, I
strongly suggest to have ONE editor. Democracy in this kind of
projects never work.

2008-11-30 Thread Vili
JSL I've been following this thread since the beginning and find it
JSL unusual that no one has mentioned the Tiki (similar to WIKI I suppose)
JSL for TBUDP (The Bat! User Documentation Project) located at the PCWIZE
JSL website (http://www.pcwize.com/).
JSL The following link will take you directly to the TBUDP page:
JSL http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/tbudp/tiki-index.php
JSL Since this project has already been started, it would seem that it
JSL falls directly in line with what every one in this thread is asking
JSL for. I've discovered that once you have registered, you are allowed to
JSL create new, and edit existing, pages.
JSL Would a printable manual really be necessary if one could always go to
JSL this site for answers to TB how-to questions? And if a printable
JSL manual is preferable to on-line help, maybe the contents of this TIKI
JSL could be printed in some sort of hard-copy manual.

Yes, printable manual is always better. Even if you dont print it, you
dont have to go online to find out something.

I knew that there are sites/info about TB out there. What I suggest is
to gather all useful info into one PDF. So, the goal is NOT to make
something completely new, but a useful, comprehensive PDF.

Re[2]: How do you create a signature file?

2006-07-05 Thread Vili
Hi Marek,

How do I insert a .gif logo?
As Roelof indicated in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
this isn't possible with a template.
MM but HTML templates are under development, so this will be possible in the
MM future.

Workaround until that:
1. Create a new mail that looks like the HTML template you like
(pictures, logos, background, etc.).
2. Put e.g. AAA into the To: field.
3. Save the message to the Outbox.
4. Make a Common folder with the name e.g. HTMLTemplate
5. Export the draft mail as MSG into a file
6. Delete the draft mail from the Outbox
7. Open the file, and replace the
To: AAA
line with
To:
8. Save and close the file
9. Import the file into the HTMLTemplate folder

You are done. Next time you need your HTML template to send a new
mail, you have to go to your HTMLTemplate folder, Ctrl+C, and paste it
to your outbox and open it. You will always reach your original
template in the HTMLTemplate folder.

As every workaround, this is not a complete solution...

Re: I tried to like The Bat!, really

2005-07-28 Thread Vili
DG 1) On one account, after unsubscribing from the only mailbox that had new
DG messages, the account's unread message count didn't change (I guess this
DG isn't quite a showstopper, but it certainly is annoying).

You did not syncronize the local and server mailbox.

DG 2) Using server-side filtering, TB! still doesn't know I have new messages
DG in folders until I've selected those folders. (Maybe there is a way around
DG this, but I shouldn't have to go out of my way to have my mail client check
DG for new messages...)

??? If you KNOW, UNDERSTAND, what IMAP is, you should know, that the
mailbox's info should be read to get the correct info. So, setup
automatic checking of mailboxes.

DG 3) After deleting a few messages from a folder, selecting any
DG message in the message list would display the incorrect message.
DG (Again, perhaps there is a fix for this, but I shouldn't have to
DG trick my mail client into showing me the currently selected
DG message instead of randomly selecting a message to show me...)

Hmmm... I did not notice this...

At me, only problem is with server side Outbox...

DG I haven't spent any time playing around with IMAP Fine Tune options or
DG anything else because I shouldn't have to.

Ok. So, you buy a car, and you dont worry about what kind of fuel you
use, what kind of tire pressure you have, etc.

I DID download Mulberry and tried. Man, that has a lot of settings
also. Once, I had the list of mailboxes 3 times under each other. Why
is that??? There was a logical explanation, the problem was my limited
knowledge of Mulberry. So is your limited knowledge of TB!'s IMAP
settings...

Re: Messages base problem.

2005-07-16 Thread Vili
Hello Alberto,

AA in the last month I had a lot of problem with the messages database
AA on several pc: I have more or less 40 pc running The Bat! as mail
AA client (different releases) on W2k fully patched with Symantec
AA Enterprise Edition (9) as Antivirus program.
AA In many cases the problem begins cancelling a message compression
AA (in many cases because the user want to shut down quickly ..:( ),
AA or in case of problem during the shut down.
AA On the next boot The Bat! ask to resolve the problem and anfert
AA clicking yes you can't see one or two month of mail...
AA So is it possible to recover messages in .bin file? And how can I
AA try to avoid this problem?

If you copy that .BIN file to somewhere and rename the copied file to
.TBB, you may import the mails back from it to your desired folder.

How to avoid this problems: exclude .TBB, .TBI and .BIN from the
antivirus search regime.

You wrote that user CANCELS the message compression. And there is a
problem at the next boot, right? It seems to me that it CAN BE a bug
in TB!, however, I would need the exact version number of yours to
test it.

Also: until the fix: switch off every account's Inbox's Compress at
exit and send the users a mail at every Monday morning to do it
manually! (This is easy by using the Scheduler.)

Also: a 3-month puppy can be trained easily. He poops on the carpet,
you push his nose into it ca. 5 times, he learns NOT to poop on the
carpet anymore, because of its consequencies... Similarly, if your
users realized that by cancelling the compress at exit cause problems,
they should have realized that doing it again and again is not...
hmm... beneficial...

(A trick, I wrote it at least once to this list, so if someone reads
it not the first time, sorry for it (Alberto: you may modify it if you
dont have a 2nd HDD or partition, to a separate directory on C:,
because you are concerned about the loss of the mails, not the HDD
crash)

How to store the mails at more than one HDD/partition all the time
(even if one HDD crash, absolutely no mail will be lost)?

- Make a new account (AccountX) with some false email address, set the home
directory on the 2nd HDD
- AccountX properties: Ignore Check all account request
- Setup folders in AccountX with every other account's name
- Setup a filter in every other account that the incoming and outgoing
mails will have a copy in the corresponding AccountX folders

So, if you make frequent backups, after a HDD crash all you have to do
is backup the first HDD and copy back the mails from AccountX and sort
them (manually). But none of the email will be lost... After a backup,
if you wish, you may delete mails from AccountX. )

If you assign the Outbox, Sentmail and Trash to a server side mailbox
(from the pulldown menu), then these kind of mails (Outbox, etc.) will
be stored on the server, and not locally in TB!. The difference is
obvious, right? So, then you can see them from everywhere.

Re: Removing attachments embedded in message

2005-07-08 Thread Vili
Hello Jon,

JP I have all my attachments stored within the message bodies. My
JP message base is becoming really large and I would like to retain
JP the text portion of the messages for archival purposes. Is there a
JP way to remove attachments by using The Bat? I would rather not use
JP an additional program such as Mailbag Assistant if I can manage
JP this with The Bat.

- Set the account to store the attachments separately
- Export all mails from a folder to a Unix mailbox format file
- Delete the mails from that folder
- Import back the mails from the file to this directory

repeat it for all folders, set the mail unread

If you are lazy :), then just move the mails to an other folder
outside of the account, Set the account to store the attachments
separately, and move them back to their original place :)

(no need for export, import)

Re[2]: IMAP setup

2005-07-08 Thread Vili
Hello Allie (and original questioner),

I often see Allie talking about problems using a server side Outbox. I
assume this is not a problem for Sentmail and Trash.
AM No. Those others work fine server side.

Could you write me in private, Allie, what is the problem with the
Outbox? It seems, that we will solve the counter/auto
connect/disconnect problem soon (see my todays mail to TBBETA), so
then I will check this Outbox problem out in details.

Yes I see that it would be useful, however, I don't think the Trash
part is working correctly. It does not seem to delete as expected. The
mail only seems to get marked for deletion and not deleted unless you
specifically compress the folder. I think this is one of Tony's
 complaints.

It compress just fine if you have a continuous connection (dont use
Auto disconnect after x time (Properties, Mail management) yet, we
are working to fix that part, I think we are pretty close) and set
Compress when changing folders at Account, Properties, IMAP fine
tune.

Also, when Managing folders (right click on the account name) set the
Synchronization ON for all or your subscribed folders (I would suggest
to set Subscribe and Synchronize for your IMAP server side Inbox,
Outbox, Sent, Trash folders).

This way for me, compressing seems to work fine.

Mulberry (Tony's favorite) delete the mail immediately, that is why
TB! is different for Tony...

JH I'm trying to get the Scheduler to create/send an email. I'd like to
JH send the same email once a month. I want to address it to my
JH secretary and BCC a group of people from my address book.
JH I've tried it a couple of ways.
JH I put her address and the group in the specific address box and
JH checked send secondary addresses as BCC. When the test email was
JH generated and saved in my outbox as a draft, only her address showed
JH up. No BCC group was generated, even when I hit F9 and looked at the
JH detailed headers.
JH I used the Linking function to link to her address in the TO: and the
JH group in the BCC. When I did that, I couldn't even get the test email
JH to generate on schedule.
JH I tried putting a macro command in the text to BCC to the group, but
JH that didn't work either.
JH Is there a way to do this that I'm overlooking?

Try this: put YOUR address in the BCC and send it out, even you dont
see your address there. Test it this way. If you get it, it works. BCC
does not show up in the header.

Re: help with selective download

2005-06-15 Thread Vili
DH So I am [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I have my filter set to ignore all
DH email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DH My office mate, [EMAIL PROTECTED], has hers set to ignore all email to
DH [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DH Mostly this works perfectly, except for when someone sends email to
DH both of us - then The Bat! on both our computer ignores it, and
DH neither of us downloads it, which has caused some problems today.

It is easy to solve:
Your Selective download filter should look like:

Ignore if
Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AND Recipient does not contain [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your coworker's Selective download filter should look like:

Ignore if
Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AND Recipient does not contain [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, if you get a mail that is sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] AND
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the quickest person will download it, so, you have to
setup an incoming filter to redirect this kind of mails:

Your Incoming filter (move to the top and make it Continue processing
with other filters... check) should look like:

If Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED] then
Redirect message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your coworker's Incoming filter (move to the top and make it Continue processing
with other filters... check) should look like:

If Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED] then
Redirect message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re[2]: Hungarian manual

2005-06-13 Thread Vili
Hello MFPA,

Some short descriptions:

 - how to store the mails at more than one HDD/partition all the time
(even if one HDD crash, absolutely no mail will be lost)
M Sounds interesting

- Make a new account (AccountX) with some false email address, set the home
directory on the 2nd HDD
- AccountX properties: Ignore Check all account request
- Setup folders in AccountX with every other account's name
- Setup a filter in every other account that the incoming and outgoing
mails will have a copy in the corresponding AccountX folders

So, if you make frequent backups, after a HDD crash all you have to do
is backup the first HDD and copy back the mails from AccountX and sort
them (manually). But none of the email will be lost... After a backup,
if you wish, you may delete mails from AccountX.

 - how can more than one TB! run at the same PC without changing
 Windows user profiles
M I thought it couldn't (unless using windows run as feature).

In the new v3 there is this reg: commandline parameter, right?

But this method works with v1, also:
- Lets say TB! is stored in C:\Program files\The Bat!
- It has a reg key at HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat!

A. So you have v1 on the PC, but you would like to try v2?
- Rename C:\Program files\The Bat! to C:\Program files\The Bat!v1
- Rename HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat! to HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat!v1
- Install v2 to C:\Program files\The Bat! and try
- If you would like to temporarily switch back to v1, do this:
- Rename C:\Program files\The Bat! to C:\Program files\The Bat!v2
- Rename HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat! to HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat!v2
- Rename C:\Program files\The Bat!v1 to C:\Program files\The Bat!
- Rename HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat!v1 to HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat!

OR

B. If you would like to try v2 as an non-final upgrade from v1:
- Copy!! C:\Program files\The Bat! to C:\Program files\The Bat!v1
- Rename HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat! to HKCU\Software\RIT\The Bat!v1
- Install v2 to C:\Program files\The Bat! (upgrade) and try

To keep the mails from downloading in each version, and other small
issues: I leave it for your intelligence :)

 - how to speed up TB! startup dramatically by hiding old mails but
 keeping them always accessible
M Again, sounds interesting. My folder for this list currently
M contains over 11000 messages and takes about 4 seconds and another
M with 4000 takes about 3 quarters of a second to load.

- Make a new account (AccountX) with some false email address
- AccountX properties: Ignore Check all account request
- Setup an access password (for example 1 :) for it)
- Move your unnecessary mails to some folders of AccountX

If you startup TB!, AccountX is closed, so its mails wont be loaded,
so: faster startup! But whenever you need a mail from it, open it with
the password and get the mail. :)

PS.: With some same technique it is possible to password protect TB!
startup. The point is to setup an account group and make this access
protected false email AccountX the administrator. So, for the startup
you need the password, but you dont need to open this account over and
over again when TB! is started (that is why it is better to have an
AccountX as administrator than a normal, active account. If you
password access an active account, you need the password once you
close the active account. Yes, you need password to open AccountX, but
as you dont read its mails, you dont really have to open it...)

Re: folder corrupted, repaired but msgs missing?!

Hello Cory,

C The check/repair process on a corrupted folder (a 310 MB .TBB file)
C recovered only part of the contents (25 MB), and wrote a PART0001.BIN
C file of 284 MB.
C This PART0001.BIN seems to hold the messages in plain text format, but
C how can/should I further work with this file to recover as much
C content as possible?

I send it in private also, as I guess this is an urgent problem. I
have seen these cases before and managed to get back the mails from it
:) So, heads up :)

This is what you have to do:

- _copy_ (dont move) the PART0001.BIN to somewhere, just to have a
backup
- make a new folder in TB!
- rename PART0001.BIN to PART0001.TBB
- import the mails from PART0001.TBB using Tools, Import messages, TBB
files.

Enjoy your mails. (Move the mails wherever you want, organize them,
etc.)

These BIN files are created when TBB files are compressed, PART0001,
PART0002, etc. I know, there is a bug somewhere in the code. If you
remember my previous mails on Compress folders on exit, etc, this is
why I wanted to take a look at the code...

BayesIt 0.8.1

2005-05-29 Thread Vili
It's a piece of crap... I should have made a Hungarian description for
the 0.8.1, I have tried to install new LNG file, no success at me and
some other buddies. At some guy it has changed to Hungarian, but after
restart, it is English again.

Was it ever tested?

Re[2]: HTML + pictures

2005-05-26 Thread Vili
How can I display/insert a picture automatically? I'm not talking about
the attachment macro but really showing it. I can doe this manually by
starting a new message and selecting type HTML. From the toolbar that
then appears I can use the insert function.
ASK You can not use HTML in templates, only plain text. To really show a
ASK picture you would need an HTML template.

It is true. Maybe a little trick will solve Tony's immediate need,
partly: create a new HTML mail, that includes the pic, also. Make a
new folder and store it there. Anytime you need this kind of mail just
copy a copy :)) of that mail into your outbox and start editing...

Yes, you cannot apply macros, but at least you have a HTML type
template...

Re: file extension on attached files in received mail

2005-05-26 Thread Vili
a When I receive an e-mail with an attached document, I am unable to
a directly open the document with a double click because the file name
a for the document has a .aq exentension that is added to the file
a name. This extension is added automatically to all received mail.

From the Main screen: Options, Preferences (Settings?), Warnings

JG I'm still struggling a bit with this plugin (v 0.8.1).
JG It seems to regard everything as spam except this list, which I've
JG managed to whitelist. It's a pain because I am selling my first item
JG on eBay and I'm getting some questions. Instead of going through my
JG inbox and deleting junk I'm going through the junk folder un-deleting
JG stuff that isn't junk :-(
JG Any recommendations as to the best way to make it a bit less
JG aggressive?

Yes: start to use BayesFilter. The newer and newer BayesIt always
comes out with errors. Our observation is that the errors are fixed in
the new versions, but you get new errors in return :) :(.

Give a try to BayesFilter and you will never go back to BayesIt :)).

BayesIt v0.81 translation

2005-05-24 Thread Vili
Hello Ritlabs and all,

We have translated v0.81 BayesIt to Hungarian. But there is an annoying
thing:

If we change the language back to English, it is not possible to
change it back to Hungarian. If I delete the

[Plugins]
Count=1
Plugin #1=E:\Data\The Bat!\bayesit\bayesit.tbp
[Plugin Data]
Plugin #1=:VUJQUy... and a lot of characters

from TBPlugin.INI, it starts up in Hungarian again.

Could someone explain
1. what happens here?
2. why is plugin data store its info ecnrypted?

Thank you in advance. I am sending this mail from webmail, I dont
know what will be attached to the end of the mail, or what will be
the Reply-To... Sorry.

Re[3]: FastMail IMAP: How to really delete messages?

2005-05-22 Thread Vili
PH Additionally you may want to check Compress all folders on exit in
Account
PH properties/Options.

I dont advise it.

I have many input from TB users. I have observed ONLY two ways to lose
mails:

1. Compress on exit checked in Inbox properties

2. Compress all folders on exit in Account/Properties

These two ways sooner or later will result in confusion in the Inbox
folder and lose of mails. Sometimes I can get the mails back (there
are some temp files in the Inbox directory), 90% it is not possible.

Before anybody writes that I am using this settings for years, no
problem': we, you, the members of this list have advanced computers,
and we KNOW the system we are using, maintaining them, etc.. I
observed mail loss when the user has somewhat older computer, not too
much RAM, or a lot of software is running at the same time on an
advanced PC.

Anyway, I always advise Hungarian users to switch off these settings
and do the compression manually. I have tried to convince Ritlabs
about this matter, even offered my Delphi experience to check the code
regarding this part of the program, but not too much feedback... I am
losing business because of this bug...

Re[2]: FastMail IMAP: How to really delete messages?

2005-05-22 Thread Vili
Hello Roelof,

TBS I dont advise it.
RO Actually, that's up to you.

Yes, I know.

TBS I have many input from TB users. I have observed ONLY two ways to lose
TBS mails:
TBS 1. Compress on exit checked in Inbox properties
TBS 2. Compress all folders on exit in Account/Properties
RO The most common reason for losing mail as I have observed it, is
RO 'not compressing' any folders. Whether you compress folders
RO automatically or manually doesn't matter very much, but it's the
RO unlimited growth of of folders without compressing at all that
RO does most damage, especially when we're discussing the inbox.

As you see, I advise USE the manual compression. 100%, again: 100% of
the users have lost their mail in cases 1 or 2. None has lost emails,
because they did not compress mails. Believe me, they would complain
immediately. I am sure, when closing TB there must be rare cases when
you can lose mails. And I have contact with a lot of users, so
statistically I see these things happen. If I see well so far, the bug
is between the creation of the new, compressed file with some
temporary name and the deletion of the old, uncompressed TBB file.
That is why I wanted to take a look at that code closely. But I
accept, Ritlabs does not want to show me that.

When I will have time, I will setup a Bat on an other machine and run
some batch that would start TB, import a mail to the Inbox, close the
program with Compress at exit and start the whole routine
automatically. If I observe mail loss, I will do this on different
machines, maybe have some observation coming out of this experience.

RO However, we were discussing IMAP folders and I don't think that
RO TB's compressing routines really count as each IMAP server stores
RO its stuff differently, so I highly suspect that the server's
RO compressing routines are used.

Sorry, I should have mentioned, that I just wanted to write this
precaution stuff FYI, only. When I started to caution users for this
fact, I dont have complains anymore :))) I just wanted to share my
experience with the group.

language files

2005-05-19 Thread Vili
I did not know, where to send it, but as I see Stefan (Tanurkov)
here, I decided to post it here:

We are translating the new v.3.5 LNG file to Hungarian. My suggestion
would be to Ritlabs that when you change something in the interface
that needs some translation, you should have a webpage (a single
page), that would contain _every_ text (like English.lnc) as link,
and clicking that link would jump to a screenshot showing the place
where that text is used in the program... With this new format of
v3.5 LNG file I know, that some text is reused many part of the program,
in that case that text would appear multiple times on that webpage
linked to the different screenshots...

Sorry, this issue maybe is not _directly_ related to the use of TB,
but indirectly it is.

Re[2]: Moving Folders Around in Account Tree

2005-05-19 Thread Vili
DAC Time was when you could hold down the ALT key and drag folders. That
DAC doesn't seem to work any more with 3.5.
PO Doesn't seem to be a problem here.
PO But, are you ALT-LMB-ing on the icon or or the name?
PO ALT-LMB-ing on the icon won't work (here), on the name it will.

Be careful with this. Sometimes, if you move around your folders too
quickly, your folder structure can be messed up!
