Yes I have. I use it for private replying to list members.

When Victor's templates were problematic his replies would say that
the message is from him but his address would be that of the person
to whom he's replying. Look for the address/es in your address book

Yes that was it. I had an addressbook entry of Victor containing your

has some problems with incorrectly time stamped files originating from a

I had a laptop/desktop installation, but my situation is slightly more
complex, as I send and receive email from both computers (although not
at the same time) with different account settings and I have problems
keeping the two in synch. In your situation, however, I would suggest
that using the TB! backup or synchronize functions is not the best way
to achieve what you want - I would use an independent backup program
for this, and copy the whole of your TB folder to the desktop.

The backup/restore process works fine. It brings over all the new
messages; however, it also keeps all previous messages, many of which
have been deleted from my laptop--or moved from one mailbox to another.

Yes, this is a problem. Synchronize does not appear to copy filters,
so I find that unless I manually copy across all my filters and folder
structure, I end up with messages in different folders on different
machines, and lots of dups. I also use different account settings on
both machines, so I cannot simply copy across the complete laptop
installation.

Before writing this, I went to the list archive and found Allie
Martin's great explanation from January 2002 which seems to deal with
the same problem I'm having. Her instructions were much clearer than
the instructions in the Help Menu for the Maintenance center.

Allie is a he, as you will see from the Rogues Gallery on the FAQ

I mean file, folder and printer sharing provided by Windows.

Sharing the same files would make them accessable from the desktop,
but it is not a backup. I think the point was to backup.

My backups are exactly what Allie describes in his mail in this same
thread, except that I backup everything: the reg-key will be exported
in the \The Bat! directly and the whole directory will be zipped and
stored on another drive. This way, I have all my settings, and the
current version of TB, in the backup. Time it takes is no longer than
TB's backup function.

My suggestion to Michael: Do the above, transfer the zipped directory,
unzip it on the desktop into the \the Bat! directory (this will
override the version you have there), import the reg key (there are
some settings in there).

Or, as I do, just store the zip file. I unzip it only if I need access
to the backup (i.e. when I have played around and messed up things).

I tried this out this morning, and it works just fine with but one,
easily fixable, problem.

My laptop is set to check mail on opening TB while the desktop (which
is strictly backup and which I don't use for sending or receiving
emails) is set to *not* check mail on opening.

Of course, after I restore my laptop Mail folder to my desktop, the
desktop setting is changed to be the same as the laptop. I *did*
say I wanted a mirror image, didn't I? Well, that's what I got!

The solution is that I'll have to change my laptop setting permanently
so that it doesn't check mail on opening and do that manually when I
open the program. Not a biggie, and I can easily live with it.

Thanks, once again, for your help.

Maybe it sounds silly, but check whether you've got an address book
entry of a certain Victor with Allie's address. It looks like you've
got the addresses of listmembers in your Address Book.
Until I decided that such an AB group didn't have any real use, I ran
a filter that put all senders on this list in an address book group,
caused more problems than that it did good. For instance listmembers
forwarding or redirecting messages and so causing duplicate (and
false) address book entries.
Now I'm old and wise and know how I could enhance such a filter, but
also that also that I don't need it anymore. ;-)

Problem mirroring my mailboxes on a second computer

2002-12-20 Thread Michael S. Greenbaum
I'm using TB 1.61 Business Edition on a Pentium III laptop PC running
Windows 98 SE with 256 mb RAM.

I need to have a mirror copy of my mailboxes on a backup computer.

My main computer is a laptop and my backup computer is a desktop.
Currently, I use the TB Backup function to create a backup file from
my laptop which I then move, using PC Anywhere, to my desktop that I
use strictly for backup. After I move the file over to the desktop, I
do a Restore in TB.

The backup/restore process works fine. It brings over all the new
messages; however, it also keeps all previous messages, many of which
have been deleted from my laptop--or moved from one mailbox to another.

I'd like to be able to restore all my mailboxes so that the desktop
will mirror what is on my laptop.

I thought that the Synchonise program would do that, but I had
problems understanding how to use it.

Before writing this, I went to the list archive and found Allie
Martin's great explanation from January 2002 which seems to deal with
the same problem I'm having. Her instructions were much clearer than
the instructions in the Help Menu for the Maintenance center.

However, in her email she stated: The synchronisation process doesn't
delete mail. It merely adds mail, folders and settings from the source
system that aren't present in the target system.

I tried the Synchronisation program--to be sure--and just as she said,
mail was added but not deleted.

Since neither Synchronise nor Backup/Restore will create this mirror
image I need, can anyone suggest an alternate solution?

Thanks.

Hello Michael,

MSG I need to have a mirror copy of my mailboxes on a backup computer.

The only solution I currently have to help you mirror an
inbox is to share your accounts directory with the desktop.
I mean file, folder and printer sharing provided by Windows.
The only problem I can see arise from this is what actually
happens is any changes you make last on one PC will reflect
in the next one on next access.

MSG My main computer is a laptop and my backup computer is a desktop.
MSG Currently, I use the TB Backup function to create a backup file from
MSG my laptop which I then move, using PC Anywhere, to my desktop that I
MSG use strictly for backup. After I move the file over to the desktop, I
MSG do a Restore in TB.

You backup on your notebook, pass the file to your desktop
and then restore it on your notebook or on your desktop? If
you restore TB! files on your desktop it means you're not
really using your desktop solely for backup. In this case
share the mail account if possible to have both your desktop
and notebook access one account. Otherwise backing up TB! is
always a good idea and storing it elsewhere is better.

MSG The backup/restore process works fine. It brings over all the new
MSG messages; however, it also keeps all previous messages, many of which
MSG have been deleted from my laptop--or moved from one mailbox to another.

If you're deleting messages but they seem to show up after a
restore are you purging and compressing all of your folders?
I purge, compress, backup and every restore never brought
from the dead a message that was meant to be deleted.
Purging and compressing your folders I believe will wipe
your account of deleted folders, messages and attachments,
etc.

MSG I'd like to be able to restore all my mailboxes so that the desktop
MSG will mirror what is on my laptop.

If you share your account the problem will disappear and
what will happen is your notebook will mirror your desktop
and your desktop mirror your notebook.

I have the same setup as yourself. My notebook is my primary
and my desktop my secondary. Both run XP and both are
connected to each other via a very simple network.

I thought running a network will cost and arm and a leg but
it's really less than 10.00 dollars to accomplish. Look at
the back of your PCs and see if you have 1394 IEEE firewire
ports and if you do you're in luck. Your PCs should be able
to communicate in live time and at blazing speeds.

Nothing beats a stable network for less than 10.00 and a
network sure beats almost anything else :)
