Re: Norton AV and TB

2001-07-08 Thread Tony A.T. Mendina

Orson,

I'm on @home when I'm at home grin and one thing that's commonly
overlooked is that the words mail and news only work if you have
the right DNS search suffix set. If you're on DHCP, this should be
taken care of automatically. If not, you need to set it. If you're
on DHCP and can't ping mail and news, and those don't get turned
into longer host names when you ping them, contact tech support for
@home.

For example, if I ping mail, DOS tells me it's pinging
mail.rchdsn1.tx.home.com. The part after mail matches my DNS search
suffix. And, if I use the server name mail.rchdsn1.tx.home.com, I can
get my mail from anywhere on the net, because the client knows the
name of the machine with my account on it.

As someone else mentioned, there is also a netmail service that lets
you use a name like mail.home.com to check your mail.

 Hi Nick,

Yes, mail is used for both SMTP server and Mail Server -- it works
and it's what was recommended by ATT.

Maybe I have to enter the full address for my mail servers?

 Orson

I have ATT @Home, and with this ISP the name we enter for mail
 server is simply mail.

I believe that is where your problem may lie. Simply typing mail should
not work... it has to be mail.server name. What have you listed as your
SMTP Server? Are you able to send messages with just mail as you SMTP
 Server name?

Hello Orson,

Historians believe that Sat, 7 Jul 2001 at 10:10 GMT -0700 was when,
Orson Kellogg [OK] typed the following:

OK Yes, mail is used for both SMTP server and Mail Server -- it works
OK and it's what was recommended by ATT.

OK Maybe I have to enter the full address for my mail servers?

If your @Home service is like mine, you can enable Netmail for free.
That will give you the full address of a server you can use regardless
of how you're accessing the net. Look for the service in portal
supplied with your @Home account.

Yes, and I would subscribe to the points you made. My points were a
bit tongue-in-cheek; Mallorca has never been on my agenda (don't
forget, I'm from Germany!) and the Canaries could be very nice if only
there was no tourism. I think the same goes for the Balearics.

promise to save the message, hehehe.

When you load Norton AV look into the help file for email.
Basically, instead of the Mail Server name you place it with
127.0.0.1 then take the Mail Server name (it's easiest when you cut
and paste) place it just ahead of your User ID using a /then
mail server name.
example
Mail Sever 127.0.0.1
User Ramon/(put Mail Server Name here)
Password (your password)

It should now stop asking you for your password.

Just installed and begun using TB yesterday. Works great, however,
can I use Norton AV to check my emails? If so, how do I set it up?

You have to enable Nortons emails manaul configuration. Then for each
account in The Bat! change the server to pop3.norton.antivirus and
the username to username/emailserver. Thats it!
