SMTP works again with 1&1 and GMX; dunno what UI did, maybe we get some

from 1&1 or GMX.

That did the trick!!! I can now use my 1and1.com accounts in The Bat! I don't
know why re-entering the password should make a difference, but it did!!
Thanks for all of your help!!! I appreciate it very much.

But, I now have an even bigger problem with my wife's computer.that I will
present in a separate thread.

This is weird as it seems to work for all other 7.x users. Let us know
when ritlabs can provide a working solution for you.

A few hours ago I wrote that I would update to ver 7 and try again to send
e-mail from my 1and1.com accounts.

Sadly, despite having upgraded to ver 7, I am STILL unable to send e-mail from
my 1and1.com accounts. I will either have to abandon The Bat or find another
e-mail host. The present situation is not tenable. One solution means a lot
of downtime in altering settings and transferring files., or altering settings
and losing web-based files. Neither one of the solutions is optimal.
Preferably, the Bat developers and the administrators at 1and1.com would sit
down together to figure out how to solve this problem. I have also opened up a
ticket with The Bat support team on this issue.

If you recall, I initiated this thread last week when I was unable to send
messages from four of 24 accounts. (Harald changed the subject line.) Today,
I spoke with tech support at 1and1.com. I also shared with them the links,
below. After being on hold for over a half hour this is what I learned:

1. On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, 1and1.com initiated SPF protocol. You can Google
"SPF Protocol" to learn more about what SPF protocol is, but in general, it is
"is an anti-spam approach in which the Internet domain of an e-mail sender can
be authenticated for that sender, thereby discouraging spam mailers, who
routinely disguise the origin of their e-mail, a practice known as e-mail
spoofing. SPF and other anti-spoofing initiatives, such as Domain Keys, work by
making it easier for a mail server to determine when a message came from a
domain other than the one claimed." See
http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/definition/Sender-Policy-Framework .

2. Following numerous complaints from customers, 1and1.com, on Friday, June 3,
2016, rolled back their system to the setting in place prior to implementation
of SPF protocol.

3. Notwithstanding the rollback, the tech support representative acknowledged
that a number of users, such as myself, are still unable to send e-mail. She
also acknowledged that others who attempt to send e-mail to user accounts will
experience a bounce back, even if not all mail sent to a user account is
bounced back. Indeed, that has been my experience: I have received several
reports of individuals not being able to send e-mail to my 1and1.com accounts,
even though some mail has been getting through to these accounts.

The tech support representative said that upper level administrators were
trying to determine how to correct this problem but did not have any answers at
this time. She promised to get back to me within 24 to 48 hours.

So, it remains to be seen if there will be a fix. In the meantime, later
reports on this thread suggest that upgrading to the latest version of The Bat
has solved the problem for some, so I will be trying that as well. I have
also experienced some instability in the current version, which I will discuss
in a separate thread, which is another reason I intend to upgrade shortly.

Up to now there are two options to be able to send mails via client
again:

1. Update TheBat to v.6.6 or higher. They work and cause no trouble. For
me it costs money for the upgrade: 19,95 Eur for the Home version, 29,95
Eur for the pro version (both plus taxes)

2. Use a different Email-client like Thunderbird which costs 0 Eur.

I have not decided yet what I will do. As I use Voyager, I'd need to
upgrade my pro version for almost 40 Euro which also *might* solve my
other issue with TheBat crashing with "TMail message released before its
use". OTOH if that crash does not get fixed, it would be a 40 Eur for a
single "bugfix", because the current version I have, 5.x, does all I
need and want concerning functionality. I think I will take a look at
Thunderbird and all its functions and plugins whether they can compete
with TheBat concerning filters, address books, postbox inspector and
templates.

And it would make a possible switch from Windows to Linux definitely
more attractive, or does Ritlabs plan to release a Mac or Linux version?

For those contemplating using a different email client, I'd suggest trying
out Opera's stand-alone client. I've found it preferable to Thunderbird,
in that it uses far fewer system resources, more in line with what The
Bat! uses. With IMAP, the only issue is that it will stop perpetual
syncing and it takes a couple of minutes to load the email content. I've
taken to using it due to The Bat! frequently crashing when opening certain
emails.

That is what is written in the German TheBat board, yes. Don't know what
is going wrong with David's installation or setup. So far he seems to be
the only one with that trouble not solved with v.7.x At least based on
the experience in the German board.

I will try that too with a v.7 trial version and see whether I can
confirm the board information or David's.

That means that the problem has already been solved by Ritlabs. Kindly

It is crystal clear that something fundamental was changed at the 1&1
server end that stops TB authentication from working. I see that they
have 2 named SMTP servers:

auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk
smtp.1and1.co.uk

Which are you using?
