 regular character in it, so that you could easily see what messages have
 a memo or not if the column was one character width.

 Am I missing something?  Surely you're not talking about using ! just
 to save space over M for instance???

P How do I write a memo for a received message?

M Select View/Memo Auto-View or hit Shift+Ctrl+I, then write memo and
M *save* it.
