Thanks for the help! I did some more searching on the drive that holds TB;
it's not the system drive itself but another, larger one. I found a couple
of copies of the whole TB directory, stemming from long-ago disasters, and
one of them held three *.TLX files. One of them was the AM version; the
others are named ACCENT.TLX and CORRECT.TLX. Apparently the last time I
installed TB, some 5 or 6 years ago, I somehow failed to get the spell
checker fully functional although enough of it did get in to provide me the
squiggly red line beneath unrecognized words. I copied all three over to
the active directory where the international pack had put all the others,
re-started TB, and everything now seems to work properly or at least as I
would expect. I can add words, both as words to be accepted and as words to
be corrected, and they persist from day to day.

The only question I have left involves the format of TLX files; I'd like to
find a help file or article that exposes their details. They appear to be
plain text, one word to a line, and entries in the WinXP registry tell TB
which of them to use -- but they have a few mysteries, and I always want to
know what goes on behind the curtain (as in "Undocumented DOS," a book I
co-authored some 23 years ago). I'm also curious about the ACCENT.TLX file
and why it's different from the language-specific ones...

My guess would be it doesn't matter too much, unless something
relevant to this function changed between those version numbers. There
would be some logic in picking the number closest to your TB! version,
as there were less releases in between where things may have been
changed. Or try both...

Here, in TB! Pro 4.0.38 with just British English ticked, I can add or
delete words in dictionaries for about 17 languages. (Well, I tried
about three languages including American English; I wasn't about to
try all of them.)

If you can't see the American dictionary in the menu, I guess it
didn't install. Maybe you can select which languages to install when
running the International Pack installer? Can you add words to any
language's dictionary other than British English?

I've now installed the 4.0 international pack, and have both British and
American checked on the Languages dialog -- but still no American English
dictionary shows up. Apparently having British checked overrides it. Any

I have a similar question about spell checking, but as you can see by mysig
I'm on a much older version of TB. My spell checking options don't list ANY
dictionary at all, and attempting to add a word has absolutely no effect. I
do have import and export buttons, and my TB program directory includes a
hunspell.dll but I don't see any references in the option menus.

My question is how to update my dictionary, or possibly install an
alternate such as hunspell's en-us.zip package, on such an old copy of TB.
TB has evolved in a direction that seems of no use for my needs, which is
why I'm still on such an old package. The spell checker is the only wart on
it, for my uses, and it's not bad enough to cause me to change (which would
be going completely away, if I did, and I'm unwilling to abandon the great
filtering capability of TB!)...

In my case, MS Office is present and I only see SSCE in TB!'s spell
checker settings (Hunspell is greyed out).

Maybe you could set up a test windows account, install TB! there and
see if Hunspell and SSCE are both present. If not, install MS Office
there as well, and then see if Hunspell and SSCE are both present.

I'd suggest going to the Spell Checker menu in a The Bat editor, and
clicking on Dictionaries. Check each Dictionary's content (starting with
"correct.tlx") and "rummage around" a bit, looking for words that could be
deleted and/or added (being careful to chose the correct Action for any you
add), etc. It's difficult for me to describe more exactly what I think you
should do there (not knowing exactly what you'd find there), but it's worth
at least doing some investigating in that Edit Dictionaries dialog box.

You can also open the non-compressed *.tlx dictionaries (on my PC, they're
"accent.tlx", "correct.tlx", and "Ssceam.tlx", and are located at
"C:\Users\fred\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!\Speller\") in a text editor (e.g.,
NotePad) for examination. However, I would ~not~ recommend editing them
there, unless you are fully aware of their file formatting - examine them
there if you wish, but edit them through the Edit Dictionaries dialog box.

PERHAPS, BEFORE TRYING ~ANY~ OF MY SUGGESTIONS ABOVE, YOU SHOULD FIRST MAKE
BACKUP COPIES OF YOUR USER DICTIONARIES BEFORE MAKING ~ANY~ CHANGES.

[The compressed *.clx dictionary or dictionaries (on my PC I have
"Ssceam2.clx" located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\TheBat!\Speller\") is/are
binary, and can't be edited in a text editor. (I also have copies of
"accent.tlx", "correct.tlx", and "Ssceam.tlx" at that location, but I
figure they are not actually my user dictionaries, but perhaps are
templates for my actual user dictionaries.)]

I'm only aware of picking the language, importing different
dictionaries if those present don't suit you, and the options pane
that includes such choices as phonetic suggestions, typographical
suggestions, slow but accurate.

I wonder if they are words you added yourself. For example you would probably
added your last name because the spell checker would not see it as being
spelled
correctly, so you would add it so it wasn't always underlined with the squiggly
red line.

I just had the issue with 'takling' .. but this happens in nearly every
