Tweaking the X-Mailer line internally

Hello Bat'ters,

I'll start off with the following, which is to be taken very
seriously!

**WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING**

The poster specifically disclaims any damage done to your system by
employing this 'trick!!' If your BAT winds up with a broken wing,
don't blame me!

I asked for clarification, but none was forthcoming, so I dusted off
and put my bell bottoms Nehru jacket back on and dug into things a
bit. I found the correct area of The Bat!'s executable on the first
try and changed it (see X-Mailer entry above)!

The text to search for is 'The Bat! (v1.62r)' [without the quotes]

There are multiple locations with this text. Better to search to the
hex offset below! Like I said, do this ONLY if you know what you are
doing!

I love UltraEdit!! :-) It makes 'hex-patching' so easy

In [thebat.exe - 4.52 MB (4,742,480 bytes)] V1.62r it begins at Offset
0x3827a9. The only restriction is that whatever you change it to, it
must be contained within the 17 characters of the original data
string. I didn't try to expand the string length, and don't know what
havoc that might cause to the executable.

This reminds me of the old days of the Commodore 64, when I'd make
custom CIA and kernel chips for people. Mine came up saying This
Commodore 64 piece of belongs to Spike!

Yes, I used to be quite a formidable 'script kiddie' back in my
misspent youth! Ah, those were the glory days.. :-)

Tweaking the X-Mailer line internally

2003-07-02 Thread Spike
Hello tbudl'ers,

Further to my post on the TWEAK, please, if you try this, take the
ORIGINAL copy of the unmodified executable [thebat.exe] and rename it
to [thebat_orig.exe] so that you have a working original to go back
to. The modified file (X-Mailer changed) needs to be called
[thebat.exe] for everything to work correctly. This is from actual
experience with trying to run it as a different filename. It doesn't
correspond with any of the registry entries and causes all kinds of
problems when run as a different file name - trust me!

OK, once again, don't try this unless you know what you are doing.
You are messing about with the actual program code at the heart of TB!

Also, I suggest you copy back the original copy of the executable
before upgrading your TB! I have no idea whether the modified file
may cause problems during an upgrade for version. Remember, this is a
free suggestion and experimental at best. If you are not experiencing
lost mails due to the X-Header (I am!) do not even consider doing the
modification.

This is strictly a work-around for this one issue, which I hope the
developers will address in a future version, or at least SUE the
companies who are creating this mess. TB! is no more a spammer's tool
than OE or any other MUA.
