defining account default column sizes

2003-08-03 Thread sam chrisp
mmk. didn't spot anything in the faq/archives about this.
on a sidenote - only making the archives viewable at 10 posts per page is near useless
IMHO.
need the option to view at least 50 at a time.

anyway.

the properties for each folder has an 'Use the account default column settings'
checkbox.
exactly how though, does one specify the account default column settings?

my problem is i want the column layout to look the same across all folders,
but i can see no other way to achieve that without manually setting up every folder.

anyone? TIA.

regards,
sam chrisp

Just change any one of the folders flagged as following the default
settings. The changes will be reflected around the others.

There are actually two different default column settings. One for
threaded view and one for unthreaded. Just to add to the confusion.

ahh.

not the most intuitive way to do it IMO.
'account default settings' has the implication that one needs to set specific defaults

a label on the properties page above the checkbox - worded properly - would be
something to consider adding.

Or, more precisely, one for each of the five threading styles,
including None. Defaults also seem to have a scope limited to the
current account.

Yes, hence *Account* default column settings :-).

Where all common folders seem to be one account... I like this very
much. :)

Well and good. Been doing this since I began using TB!

Add me to the confused. As I read this you're saying that column
settings can be set up so there is a default for a threaded
presentation, and a different default for non-threaded presentations.

How, specifically, would one implement this?

As an example, I would like to have folders of emails unthreaded, but
with a uniform column arrangement across those folders.

I would also like to have all my (many) mailing list folders with a
uniform column arrangement across those folders, but with threading
by either reference or subject implemented.

 Can this be done? How?

DG Add me to the confused. As I read this you're saying that

Actually one presentation for non-threaded and one for each
threading method.

DG How, specifically, would one implement this?

One would arrange the columns for each threading permutation. Select
non-threaded; arrange columns. Select Thread by reference; arrange
columns; Select Thread by subject; arrange columns - and so on.

Now just use Alt-0, Alt-1, Alt-2 etc to select the view on-the-fly.

DG As an example, I would like to have folders of emails

DG Can this be done? How?

Not really, because you are only given one Default column settings
per account. Of course, you could have an account for lists and an
account for the others. One of these accounts need only be a dummy
account as a filter target. Other than that, just use Alt-1
threading for the most part and switch to unthreaded with Alt-0 on
demand.

Marck, thanks for your reply.

What you suggest is essentially what I have been doing. But I read into
your original remark more than was there; namely that one could have
truly independent column/sort settings for unthreaded vs. threaded (of
various kinds) folders, without selecting the threading mode as one
entered each folder. Apparently not so.

Stefan Tanurkov threw out this teaser a few days ago:

It is also planned to make it possible to define various views (based
on combination of the settings from the View menu) and switch between
 them quickly...

Perhaps this will address some of these issues. Or perhaps wishful
thinking... :)
