IMO the term 'external editor' is a little misleading.
It is possible to integrate such a component written
by another company quite smoothly, as Acrobat shows
with its reader. If the editor is provided e.g. as a
DLL, it could appear as integral part of TB.

That's the way I would like to see it.

The solution is not to put your PGP key in every message.
That's an absolutely annoying overhead. Put it on your

Re[2]: Submission forms

2000-01-26 Thread Wolfgang Kynast

Hi,

...
J> I imported the PGP-key and added the forms. Now this may sound stupid, but
J> I still have no idea how to use them. I see them in the submission forms
J> menu window, but all I can do with them is delete them from there again...
J> Am I doing something wrong?

from a mail to this list I wrote in January 1999:

Example: you want to provide the service "wish list".
So we declare you the server ;-)

The server has to write a form, put it in a TB mail and sign it
with PGP. He then sends this mail containing the signed form to
all clients (all those subscribers of this list willing to add
to your wish list).

Each client has to fire up TB, receive this mail, check the
digital signature (using your PGP key) and then store the
form in a file with a .TBC extension, e.g. TBWISH.TBC.
The client now adds this form to his list of submission forms.
(This is where we do not succeed, so the following is
what I think how it should work)

Now the client (e.g. me) wants to send you an entry for the
wish list. To do that I start TB and "call" your form
TBWISH.TBC. TB presents me an input window (formatted according
to your form specification) to enter my wishes and, when I press
OK, sends my input to you in a special formatted mail signed
with my PGP key.

You, the server, receive this mail, verify my digital signature
and handle the data. Because the data was automatically
formatted by the client's (my) TB, you can easily write a
program
to process the data (i.e. add my wishes to the wish list).

Because PGP was used
- I knew that this form really comes from you and not for
example
from MS trying to steel our good ideas ;-)
- you know that the wish real was from me and can send me the
donation for my great ideas :-)

Does this make things clearer? Now we only have to make it work
;-)

right.

G> save for a few headers,

the rest of the headers and. more important, the body of the
message.

G> and the regular filter would be received and going to the
G> trash (if I set it up that way).

Yes. But: using kill filters might be slower than downloading
all messages and throw away some of them.
The reason is that, if at least one kill filter is active,
TB has to contact the POP server twice for each message:
- retrieve the standard headers (1)
- check the kill criteria and either
  - delete the message on the server (2a) or
  - retreive the message (2b)
It depends on your POP server which way is faster.
With my server, kill filters do not pay, because I do
not get a lot of large mails to be killed.

Re[3]: Orange folders color

1999-09-30 Thread Wolfgang Kynast

Hi,

...
C> "Read" is a post you've opened at least the time you've defined to
C> change it from "unread" to "read". No change.

C> "Seen" is a post you have not read, but which is in a folder you've

C> means that you know this post is here, but you want to read it later.

C> "New" is a post which is in a folder you've not opened since this post
C> has been downloaded. (May be the definition for "session"?)

C> The colors would work like that:
C> 1- If there is at least a "new" post in the folder: red. end.
C> 2- If there is at least a "seen" post in the folder: orange. end.
C> 3- brown. end.

That seems to make sense. I support this proposal.

Installing HP printers (Was: Re[2]: OT: Computer Philosophy)

In my experience, it's VERY important to install HP printers via
the HP setup program and NOT via the control panel. The later
did not work for me, although there were no error messages.

Problem with TB on Win98

1999-11-12 Thread Wolfgang Kynast

Hi,

just installed TB on a new PC under Win98/2.
On startup error msg 'Out of system resources' is displayed.
Only the outer window is displayed, no folder pane etc.

I doubt that it is really a TB problem, because two
other programs show similar symptoms. On the other side,
more than a dozen other programs run without problems.

Any hints?

Hi Pasquale,

PJFS> Why can't I see the attachment folder in the bat, but I see it

Because it isn't a mail folder. TB maps its mail folders to

as it contains files, not messages.

The Bat! - bug report

Hello The Bat! developers,

  I'm using The Bat! Version 1.38 Beta/3

and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:

Printing on an Epson stylus color 760 does not work
under TB. The Epson control panel pops up and
disappears immediately. If its of any interest:
the printer is connected via USB.
Other application print well.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

click on the print button ;-)

Questions to TBUDL:
- any tips on how to proceed or find a workaround?
- how do I print to an USB printer in a DOS box?

Hi Thomas,

TF> Never thought of that. This means that "thebat.exe" (the full

That's why I always put the version in the file name when I

Epilepsy and computer programs

2000-10-05 Thread Wolfgang Kynast

Hi all,

the mail quoted below was sent to the list managers by a list member
who, for obvious reasons, does not want to mail it to the list
under his name. Because I feel that the information might be of
great interest for others I'm sending the info now, of course
with permission of the author.

If you want to contact the original author pls. sent me a short
note and I will pass on your email address to him.

[begin quote]
I am leaving TBBETA because I am no longer using the Beta version
of TB, and whilst I still use TB as a solid PGP e-mailer, I have
gone over to another program for most of my e-mailing.

The reason for this is simply I do not get on with The Bat, and I
cannot compete with others in technical competence in TBBETA list.

This may surprise you and I mention this only by the way, as the
effect I experience using TB is a "me specific" thing. I have
suffered with various forms of epilepsy all my life (now 53 years!)
and because of my condition I often feel "uncomfortable" with
certain things (flashing lights, disco lights, flashing neon
tubes.etc.,etc.and some computer programs). I do not
suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, such as those who watch TV
or video games and experience seizures, however. As a result, I
was recently visited at home by a research team who wanted to get
a range of test results on somebody who had epilepsy but not
photosensitive epilepsy, and I was given an encephalograph (EEG)
to test and record the minute levels of electrical activity in my
brain. Very little brain activity of a seizure type was recorded
whilst I watched TV, played on a Nintendo 64, or used my computer.

However, when I fired up The Bat, the electrical activity
increased remarkably (but still below the "noticeable" level,
just enough to make me feel uncomfortable). The same was true of
Word 2000, and Lotus 123.

This added brain activity could be increased to the point at
which I had a seizure and I have subsequently removed both Word
and Lotus 123 from my computer, though The Bat has a lot to offer
and I am loathe to discard it (especially as I've registered it).

The lowest additional activity was recorded using the Calypso 3.1
mail program, so I tend to use that, plus Becky 2. as I said,
this is a "me specific" thing, caused by a medical condition over
which I have no control and probably would affect nobody else in
the same way, even a fellow sufferer of "the falling sickness"
(as Shakespeare once described it, in "Julius Caesar").

So I am giving up using The Bat as one of my main e-mail programs
but I am still interested in the discussions on TBUDL. Should
anybody else that you know want to know something about epilepsy
and computers, or if anybody out there is just interested, I
should be pleased to receive their e-mails.

[end quote]

Hi John,

1.49c is a beta version available from http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/beta.html

1.49e is YAB (yet another beta) that by mistake slipped on some

Re[2]: Latest Bat! version?

2001-02-02 Thread Wolfgang Kynast

Hi all,

JR>> What is the address for the Ritlabs ftp directory? Thanks.

ST> ftp.ritlabs.com with releases in /pub/the_bat and betas in
ST> /pub/the_bat/beta

Let me take this opportunity and repeat a mail here that I
wrote yesterday on TBBETA:

-
...
> It's the friendly thing to do ;-).

Let me pick this good point up and try to clarify my viewpoint
of this 'new beta' issue:

New betas are announced by Ritlabs on http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/beta.html
As far as I can remember, the existence of the ftp server has never
been officially announced by Ritlabs.

Therefore, for me a new beta exists *only*, if it is mentioned
on the beta download page. BTW, *if* it is mentioned there we
should expect an announcement from Ritlabs within a reasonable
time listing the changes.

For me lurking at the ftp directory for new files is unfriendly
against our valued manufacturer. In addition, I consider it
unfriendly to accuse them for not providing an announcement
in this case: why should they - it was not designated to the
public.

One might argue that they should put such versions intended
for special testers only into a protected area on the ftp server.
That's a valid point. But we should always keep in mind that
Ritlabs is a very small company and I prefer to let them
develop - not waste their time with administrative things like
protecting directories and maintaining and distributing passwords.

Not everything that is technically possible is ok to do.
Do you go into your neighbors house and do self-service in his
kitchen - just because he did not lock up the door?

We had a lot of unnecessary trouble in the past regarding new
betas. Remember these periodical "there is a new beta, but it
doesn't run" messages - caused by downloads when the upload
was not finished? Remember all these "what is new in this
version" mails - when Ritlabs did not intend to release that
particular version to the public?

To return to the 'friendly thing': I would like to appeal to
everybody to be friendly to our friends at Ritlabs - look for
news versions at the beta download page, not at the ftp server.

Of course this was a private note, not a moderator comment ;-)

I still do not understand why this is such a problem for you.
The pop-window comes up and disappears shortly after - so what?

If I think about it: the new approach looks quite useful to me.
It allows you to easily see whether there is a problem with
the pop server or the smtp server.

You better do so :-)

BTW, that was the reason for my initial question. A OS level
backup will always save deleted messages too unless you do a
compress before. Sorry for not beeing verbose enough.

When I think about it: did somebody check how TB backup handles
this? Are deleted messages still there after a restore?

Right. At the moment GMX seems to lack some hardware.
Little tip: if there is no connection after about 5 seconds,
don't wait for the timeout, use cancel and try again.

No. This happens when the pictures are not inlined in the mail.
TB does not request the missing pictures via http (and will
hopefully never do so). To see everything double click on the
