The desktop file is correct; it launches gnome-screenshot --interactive.
So the program itself is indeed broken.

I notice it works when running from a terminal. Odd.

ah, that's how it's been running all this time with my running it
from Activities, so obviously the yum update wiped out some settings.
is that something i should have expected? i've done numerous updates
before now with no problem.

gnome-screenshot does what its name says, it takes a screenshot (with a
flash effect, which is what you describe). If you want to tweak settings
before taking the screenshot, run it in interactive mode:

gnome-screenshot --interactive

after update, suddenly gnome-screenshot won't start

2014-08-28 Thread Robert P. J. Day

did a massive "yum update" on my 64-bit ASUS laptop earlier today
and, suddenly, gnome-screenshot won't come up. if i now go to
"Activities" and left click ... nothing.

if i run "gnome-screenshot" from the command line, i get a sudden
burst of white on the display, then nothing.

at least one other graphical app (qoppa's studio pro PDF editor) is
also behaving weirdly. anyone else finding strange things happening in
their gnome desktop session?

The heuristic to decide whether to show the New Window button is
implemented in such a way that it's probably going to guess correctly
for non-GNOME apps. Off the top of my head, I think we assume that New
Window will work unless the app is a single-instance app using
GtkApplication (I'm not aware of any non-GNOME app that fits this bill).
These apps are supposed to provide their own New Window option in the
app menu for it to be possible to create a new window anyway, and GNOME
Terminal unfortunately named it New Terminal instead of New Window,
which confused the heuristic.

Or something like that. TL;DR: don't worry about it. Probably.

Cheers,

Michael

Seems we (at Fedora) need to take action then and modify the .desktop
files appropriately and request the modification to be applied upstream,
too. Not all upstreams use the GNOME Shell, and not all upstreams would
learn about the needed/useful desktop file modification either.

All fine, except that we should maybe feel more than a little
concerned about release criteria wordered with *must* and not
*should*, when the dependency is a (rather large) piece of proprietary
software we have no control of and possibly no access to.

A bogus ExclusiveArch restriction was added to the sanlock package
preventing it building on armv7 and i686. Bug to request this be
removed, which would fix libvirt deps:

upgradepath runs, but I believe it only runs on updates, and Bodhi is
not enabled for F21 yet.

FWIW I've been running 21 since 20 came out, and my experience is pretty
close to Peter's. Stuff goes wrong here and there, but broadly it's
fine. There is a known issue with shutdown delaying,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1088619 .

[Test-Announce] GNOME 3.14 Test Day today!

2014-08-28 Thread Adam Williamson
Hi, folks! Sorry for the late notice, but better late than never. Amita
mentioned this on Tuesday, but I figured a proper announcement mail
can't hurt!

Today (that is, 2014-08-28) is GNOME Test Day!

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2014-08-28_Gnome_3.14

We’ll be testing GNOME 3.14 pre-release on Fedora 21 pre-Alpha, so I
expect everything will work absolutely perfectly and no-one will find
any bugs at all ;)

But seriously! Come on down and test, there are lots of fun new features
in GNOME 3.14 to try and both GNOME and Fedora teams could definitely
use some exercise on the new bits that’ll be included. We have
brand-spanking-new nightly live images for i686 and x86_64, and even an
ARM image if you’re that one person with hardware capable of running
GNOME Shell on ARM. Wayland is actually in more-or-less usable shape for
Intel video adapters now, so if you have an Intel-based system you can
even give that a try!

The wiki page has full instructions, and we’re using the handy test day
results reporting system[1] so you don’t have to hand-edit results into
wiki pages, that’s so 2012. Friendly folks – both QA folks and GNOME
developers – will be standing by all day European and North American
time in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC to help you out with testing
and discuss any bugs you come across. If you don’t know how to use IRC,
you can read the instructions[2], or just use WebIRC[3]. Please come by
and help out if you have a few spare minutes! Thanks.

Sometimes. Provided that the issue did not corrupt anything, does not lead
to boot problems and does not prevent from updating (aka Yum breakage).
For instance, some scriptlet mistakes mess with symlinks, with file
contents, with config files, and with alternatives -- they cause damage.
The fix in a next compose will no longer cause damage, but doesn't
_repair_ the damage that has been caused earlier.

It's not that easy. There are more factors that are relevant, such as
errors during boot, crashes during login, broken dependencies (will
--skip-broken lead to trouble because of unversioned deps?), mirror
propagation times (it takes multiple days for updates to become available
at a nearby mirror, whereas some people install packages from koji/copr as
well as from private repos that are ahead of Rawhide).

Well, experience differs. My experience is that over time, Rawhide breaks
into pieces either slowly or all of a sudden. Up to the point that a
reinstall would result in something that works better, because reporting
strange symptoms seldomly is fruitful.

> Anyhow, if you have suggestions for improvement, I'm all ears.

There are still packagers, who don't

 - build for Rawhide before building for F20/F21,
(i.e. don't violate the upgrade paths)

 - smoke-test your builds on a local installation before releasing them
(i.e. notice whether a program segfaults immediately!)

and for library upgrades

 - examine the effort it takes to perform library ABI/API upgrades,
(i.e. talk to all dependency owners before breaking dependencies).

The F21 schedule [1] has changed again. Now since the alpha release is on
9th Sept and translation deadline is on 30th September, would like to move
the L10n test day from 9th to 23rd Septemeber (Tuesday).
