I differ with you on this point. There are still so many places in the
world with limited/expensive/slow, or even no network connectivity at
all. In fact, it is only in the developed countries that broadband is
prevalent like water, and in the rest of the world, just like water, it
 is a limited resource.

On a related note, folks in the developed world might be surprised to
know that 32-bit processors are still very much in use.

I work with the Free Media project of Fedora, and I know of so many
instances where providing the Fedora DVD (32 and 64 bit) has empowered
the lives of people and small organisations.

 Fedora-20-x86_64[i386]-DVD.iso

 Fedora-21-Standard-x86_64[i386]-DVD.iso
 Whence disappeared in Fedora.next!?

F21 will not have any generic DVD image. It will have a DVD-type (I'm
trying to call them 'offline' now) image for Server which contains only
the Server package groups. The question of having or not having the DVD
was kicked back and forth quite a bit, I'm not sure why you decided to
just quote one random mail from one thread about it from ten months ago.
QA can't really change that decision, it's a FESCo choice in the end.

All together should read what the man wrote till the moment of the
comprehension of the essence of the written.
Fedora is a great project, perhaps too great for those who have invented it.

The latest tigervnc via yum update seems to have solved
the screen stall problem. No stalls despite vigorous
exercising things that wedged the previous version.

If I go to one of the ftp mirrors and download the package and then also
download the package from pbone.net they are different
sizes. The version from pbone.net installs using a local install. I didn't
try to install the version downloaded by hand from the
ftp mirror since yum seems to indicate that it's not a valid package.
Interestingly, the package that I downloaded from pbone.net
is size 43452 which is specifically one of the errors that yum complains about
when trying to download from the ftp mirrors:

 [Errno 14] curl#36 - Offset (43452) was beyond file size (42348)

yum error during update (Fatal Error TypeError)

2014-09-10 Thread Kevin Martin
yum clean all doesn't help, I'll start with that.

The following error occurred with yum update today:

Running transaction check
Running transaction test
TypeError: an integer is required
FATAL ERROR: python callback bound method RPMTransaction.callback of

I saw this yesterday as well so decided to try to update each package one at a
time to see which package this error occurs for.
Interestingly, it's more than one:

why does perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker depend on systemtap-sdt-devel?

2014-09-10 Thread Robert P. J. Day

possibly admitting my ignorance, but why does installing
perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker drag in systemtap-sdt-devel? i see no logical
connection, and i don't even have any systemtap packages installed.

i ask since i'm working with a software package that fails to
configure properly if the header file sys/sdt.h is installed on the
development system, but it needs the MakeMaker package, so i'm in a
bit of a dilemma.

Secure Containers F21

2014-09-10 Thread Gene Czarcinski
libvirt-sandbox Secure Containers (virt-sandbox-service) are seriously
broken on Fedora 21 as of TC6 plus today's updates:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1135762

Any chance of this being fixed sooner rather than later?
libvirt-sandbox-v0.5.1-4 works fine on F20 (after applying the patches
for this problem: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1133686).

Re: Proposing new dual booting release criteria

2014-09-10 Thread Gene Czarcinski

establishing our purview. Although, I'd suggest the size of the
distribution doesn't matter, if we nerf someone's system because of
something we're not doing correctly I think we should block on that.

So are we fine with the Windows and OS X criteria as originally
proposed? Adam, would these be better as beta blockers or as final
blockers?

The installer must be able to install into free space alongside an
existing clean Windows installation and install a bootloader which can
boot into both Windows and Fedora.

The installer must be able to install into free space alongside an
existing clean OS X installation and install a bootloader which can boot
into both OS X and Fedora, OR the installer must prominently warn the
user that he may be unable to boot OS X after installation, allowing the
user to cancel installation and reboot to OS X.

For the Linux criterion, how about this:

The installer must be able to install into free space alongside
existing GNU/Linux installations supported by the upstream software for
detecting previously-installed operating systems, and install a
bootloader which can boot into each previous installation.

The intent of this is that if upstream os-prober supports it and (a)
Fedora breaks it or (b) it's unexpectedly broken due to a regression (my
language here is kind of ambiguous; not sure if that's good or bad),
then that's a blocker. It also implicitly applies to cases where
multiple GNU/Linux systems are installed. We would then replace this
criterion in the future if BLS is adopted.

I am entering this discussion a little late but better late than never.
As far as booting other linux installation, I would be happy if it would
boot other *Fedora* or *RHEL* installation*!!!* Currently,
/etc/grub.d/30_os-prober is broken as far as other Fedora 21
installations because of the change to using linux16 and initrd16
for non-uefi systems. This is something *unique* to Fedora and RHEL
and, thus, is ignored by upstream grub support.

The problem is described here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1108296
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1108344

The resolution of the problem requires a change to os-prober and grub2.
os-prober has been updated but not grub2.

Question: Why isn't this an alpha blocker. RHBZ#1108296 has a patch
which fixes the problem.

Note: without the fix you may be able to boot Umbuntu but not a second
Fedora 21. This makes not sense to me!

Personally, I do not use os-prober and prefer to create
/etc/grub.d/40_custom files which use configfile to chain-load other
configuration files.

Me too, which is why I really really wish I could tell anaconda
to create the grub2 directory and cfg file, but not try to actually
install grub and screw around with the MBR and such.

Because we are in Alpha freeze, so only things that actually fix
accepted blocker bugs or freeze exceptions go into the base repo.

Was the major bug fix addressing something that would be blocking the
alpha release?

There is a version just pushed into updates-testing:

http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/testing/21/SRPMS/t/tigervnc-1.3.1-11.fc21.src.rpm

But I'm not sure if that includes the major bug fix you are

Not really since December 2010; at least if you can believe in
comments to bug 661553. At that time the bug was acknowledged and
apparently fixed. The trouble is that it resurfaced.

I think that a new bug report is needed with an explicit reference

Me too, which is why I really really wish I could tell anaconda
to create the grub2 directory and cfg file, but not try to actually
install grub and screw around with the MBR and such.
As long as my system has more than one disk drive ... I fake it. With
/dev/sda the normal bios boot drive, I tell anaconda to install grub2
into the MBR of /dev/sdb. I have previously updated
/etc/grub.d/40_custom to add a configfile entry for the new system.

BTW, I have proposed to change/replace the os-prober functionality with
something that uses configfile to chain load other Fedora installs. Ran
the flag up the pole but nobody saluted. Naturally, you need to regular
chainload for windows.

I have delved into anaconda code before, maybe I will look at creating a
patch have anaconda NOT install grub2 in the mbr. Mmmm ... I wonder if
no mbr is also appropriate for syslinux/extlinux.

CVE-2014-3575 arbitrary file preview disclosure via ole2 objects

The vulnerability allows an attacker to send a document which when opened will
trigger the prompt to Update Links but if the user cancels that prompt may
still generate and insert into the document an OLE2 preview image of a file on
the victims filesystem, Data exposure is possible if the updated document is
then distributed to other parties.

Fedora 21 Alpha karma requests

2014-09-10 Thread Adam Williamson
Hi folks! It's that time again - as we're in the Alpha freeze, updates
that fix freeze exception and blocker bugs need karma so we can push
them to stable. Here's the list of updates that needs karma:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2014-10605/anaconda-21.48.5-1.fc21
 - this isn't in TC6 so you'd have to build a custom image or 'yum update' it
on a live image to test right now, but it or a later build should be in TC7

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2014-10178/oxygen-gtk3-1.4.0-4.fc21
 - this is KDE's default GTK+ theme, so KDE users can test it by running some
GTK+ 3 apps and checking everything looks good. In particular, check that
checkboxes work properly.

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2014-10190/python-blivet-0.61.1-1.fc21
 - this one was in TC6, so if TC6 partitioning works for you (at least no worse
than previous TCs), +1 it

Thanks folks!

Re: why does perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker depend on systemtap-sdt-devel?

possibly admitting my ignorance, but why does installing
perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker drag in systemtap-sdt-devel? i see no logical

i ask since i'm working with a software package that fails to
configure properly if the header file sys/sdt.h is installed on the
development system, but it needs the MakeMaker package, so i'm in a
bit of a dilemma.
Coincidence of events. I hit the same issue yesterday when trying rt-4
on f21 for the first time ;)

When in doubt:

$ echo n | sudo yum install --releasever=21 --installroot=/tmp/empty foo

And then examine the output. In this case, perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker →
perl-ExtUtils-Install → perl-devel → systemtap-sdt-devel. Which appears
to have been so since December 2010:

Yes, it's perl-devel which pulls in systemtap-sdt-devel

But, I think there are a couple of bogus deps on perl-devel in some of
the perl package's sub-packages, which are causing the dependency bloat e.g:

perl-ExtUtils-CBuilder
perl-ExtUtils-Embed
perl-ExtUtils-Install
perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker
perl-ExtUtils-ParseXS
perl-Module-Build

I don't think any of these should R: perl-devel
(f21-patch enclosed below).
