[Call for Action] Deprecate TCP wrappers Today!

2018-03-21 Thread Sumantro Mukherjee
Hey All,

A gentle reminder, Today(2018-03-22) is Deprecate TCP wrappers[1] Test Day!

As part of this planned Change[2]for Fedora 28, this is an important Test Day!

TCP wrappers is a simple tool to block incoming connection on the application
level.
This was very useful 20 years ago when there were no firewalls in Linux. This
is not the case for today and
connection filtering should be done at the network level or completely in
application scope if it makes sense
Removing this package from Fedora will remove a package from default and
minimal installations
(removing the dependency of daemons such as SSHD).
It also makes the configuration straight-forward for new users (no shared files
defining access rules, poorly reporting any errors to users.
Removing the dependency from all packages and retiring the package in the
single release will minimize users confusion and avoids opening sensitive
services after the update.
Since many crucial functionalities (OpenSSH and others) depend on this, We hope
to test and see, whether it's working well enough and catch any remaining
issues.

As always, the event will be in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC.

That was filed against DNF which seems not really responsible.  A straight rpm
-Uvh
would have "failed" as well.

Anyway, I've done https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1559203.

Thanks to all for the responses / insight.

In most cases of even where grub2 isn't used grubby currently still
deals with the kernel upgrade process, although it doesn't actually
have to as there's other methods that will work if installed/setup.
There's been ongoing work to retire grubby and I believe that should
actually take effect in rawhide RSN.

Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-28-20180320.n.0.iso

1.5G RAM VM, PackageKit goes bezerk, crashes, systemd-coredump then
spins up trying to collect crash data and runs out of memory, and all
hell breaks lose. This is non-deterministic in that it differs in some
way every boot, what thing gets killed off first. Usually I just get a
total hang of the VM even the serial console 'virsh console' hangs and
I can't extract any info from the VM. In this case, I get a complete
journal capture of the problem.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1559176

In this case, with a bit more memory, 2G, the above problem is avoided
more often. But then anaconda is hanging on launch more often than
not.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1559180

Both seem like blockers, but openqa has nothing like this going on
with these same images. I have of course done media test, and there
are no errors reported on the host.

Technically yes, the kernel should require new-kernel-pkg since it uses
it in the scriptlet. However, this might be a special case, because on
some arches we don't use grub2. But perhaps it could be conditionalized.

No, see, it isn't good enough.

What does the word "proprietary" mean to an end user that is targeted
here---one that is not necessarily part of the Open source eco system
and has no context?

What does it say about Free Software, and its importance?

What does it say about how and why the Fedora community has made a
commitment to this movement?

Nothing at all. So, no, the "proprietary" label is not enough.

I won't reply to this hyperbolic comment. What I will do, is quote the
"Freedom" foundation from here instead:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/fedora-project/project/fedora-overview.html

"We are dedicated to free software and content.

Advancing software and content freedom is a central community goal,
which we accomplish through the software and content we promote. We
choose free alternatives to proprietary code and content and limit the
effects of proprietary or patent encumbered code on the Project.

Sometimes this goal prevents us from taking the easy way out by
including proprietary or patent encumbered software in Fedora. But by
concentrating on the free software and content we provide and promote,
the end result is that we are able to provide:

- releases that are predictable and 100% legally redistributable for
  everyone;
- innovation in free and open source software that can equal or exceed
  closed source or proprietary solutions;
- and, a completely free project that anyone can emulate or copy in
whole or in part for their own purposes.
"

So, how is this new feature is coherent with this in its current form?

What do the other community members think please?

Re: The new gnome-software update with "third party repositories" support

Could the software sources can be divided into a few categories maybe?
For example:

- Fedora defaults "These are default Fedora repositories. Keep them
enabled to get the latest updates from Fedora"

- Extra Free/Open source software for Fedora Workstation "These are
extra repositories for Fedora Workstation users that provide Free/Open
source software from other sources, such as COPRs"

- Extra Proprietary software for Fedora Workstation "These are extra
repositories for Fedora Workstation users that provide proprietary
software that is not free/open source"

- Other repositories "These are other repositories that have been
  configured, such as user-enabled repositories"

Maybe there could be a colour scheme too to signify each category's
status, like Blue for Fedora repositories, Green for
Workstation-free, Red for Workstation-nonfree, and a Yellow for
user-enabled ones.

How does that sound? I don't know how much work it'll take, of course.

Great. Thank you for following this up. :)

kernel update process (failure)

2018-03-21 Thread Ed Greshko
I know this isn't strictly a "test" question.  But I think maybe more folks with
greater insight my be lurking here.

In troubleshooting a kernel update issue on the user's list it was finally
determined
that if one erased "grubby" the kernel would not get upgraded properly.  RPM
would
show the new kernel installed but it would not be in the boot menu and the
needed
files would not be in /boot.  There is a scriplet error, but it is called
"nonfatal".

I feel this to be a bugzilla.  So, my question is, should kernel-core require
/sbin/new-kernel-pkg or should it be a "protected" package in the dnf
configuration?
Or something else?

Conjecture is just a conclusion based on incomplete information. It isn't a
fact.
