Re: [Texascavers] RE: Austin Cave Fest promotes safe caving
I'd heard somewhere (Now that's authoritative!) that when the overall stats of caver injury and death are added up vs. hours spent caving, it falls somewhere between Soccer and Golf on the scale of dangerosity. This doesn't include cave diving, which would skew the numbers, as diving appears to be quite a bit more dangerous. I have no authoritative statistics to back up that last statement, though -- just a hunch. David, you didn't indicate if this is something that you are happy about or not, but if so, congratulations is in order. I, for one, will miss your postings about led's and such. Good luck in your new endeavor and keep us posted please. Charles On 10/30/07, David Locklear dlocklea...@gmail.com wrote: I started a new career today. At my new job, I am sitting behind a computer in a very dusty machine shop for 8 hours a day or more, and I will no longer have the time or the desire to surf the web, and go shopping for LED lights. So I doubt I will be posting much of anything for the next couple of months.( I hear people shouting - Hoorah ! ) In addition, I will no longer be driving much, so my mileage reports on my fuel-efficient vehicles won't be of much interest. I will leave it at that, but feel free to e-mail me privately if you would like to hear more about my mid-life career change. May I add that Hubbert used conventional (liquid) oil in his calculations and did not include unconventionals like heavy oil, tar sands and oil shale. If you only include conventionals, I think the bell curve is steeper going down. -- Lyndon Tiu - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project
Just a reminder that the November karst project weekend at Government Canyon State Natural Area is scheduled for the 17th and 18th. Directions to the gate of GCSNA. Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop 1604 in northwest Bexar County (clearly shown on any state highway map). Drive 2 miles north on U.S. 16 to the third traffic light and turn left onto FM 1560 (there is a Shell station on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles till you see the sign for GCSNA. Follow the arrow to the right and drive 2 more miles to the sharp left turn in the road. The gate to GCSNA is straight ahead. Enter at the gate and then take the first right. There is an unlocked gate that will need to be opened and then closed behind you. Continue to the Volunteer/Research Station, where we will meet. Contact me if you want to camp. I really like dangerosity! :-) Even the kind of dry caving you do, and where you do it, greatly affects the risk. The original statement concerned caving in Austin, which must be on the safer end of all types of caving. For example, there are few vertical drops and flooding is generally not much of an issue, although it can be in certain cases. The caves, with a couple of exceptions, are not very long or complex and they are relatively warm. I can think of many more dangerous places to go caving. As they say, the most dangerous part of a caving trip is the drive there and back! That probably applies to soccer, golf, and most other sports as well. People get injured or killed playing golf?! Killed probably not, but injured, sure. Golfer's elbow, for example. What about the risk of being struck by lightening while playing golf? That is probably more likely to occur than having a caving accident. And of course there is the threat of drive by shootings while on the golf course. And then there is the dreaded fashion mistake of wearing seer sucker shorts before Memorial Daywhich can lead to a lifetime banishment from the country clubforcing one onto to Municipal Courses adjacent to the civic zoo which might lead to an escape by dangerous animalsand one encountering a tiget on the 13th hole. Personally, I will take my chances undergroundas I have no desire to walk around a field with a lightening rod in my hands.
