[Texascavers] Invitation to go caving at Spring Creek Cave
Texas cavers, The DFW Grotto will resume its project to continue the exploration and mapping of Spring Creek Cave, about 15 miles north of Boerne, Texas, the weekend before Thanksgiving, Nov. 20 - 21. If you would like to see this easy and interesting cave, please join us. I only ask that you let me know that you are planning to come. We will be camping at the cavers' campsite at nearby Cave Without a Name both Friday and Saturday nights. Spring Creek Cave is a wetsuit cave. You will be swimming in deep water, but fins are not necessary. A trip to the waterfall shaft about 4,000 feet into the cave, is a recommended destination. There are excellent photo opportunities. Besides touring the cave, if you would like to join a mapping team, and perhaps an exploration team (we need a team to push and map a side passage), which will require dealing with mud in addition to the water, let me know and I'll tell you about it. [Texascavers] IT's BAAAACK! Longhorn Caverns State Park Project, Saturday, November 6th.
Alright, all you caving ghouls! Having gotten your bellies full of candy, sweets, orange beer (?), razor blade filled caramel corn balls and apples, and still wearing that Halloween make up, it's time to work off those calories, get those cobwebs outta your hair, and lose that sunken look to your face by helping out at Longhorn Caverns this fall! This will be occurring the first Saturday of November, December, February, March, April, and culminating in May. The staff of LCSP is very enthusiastic about having the TSA back and involved and plans several surprises for us later on. Some of the tasks we have in mind will occur above the cave, in the cave, and WAAAY back in the cave. They're listed below and, if interested, contact me offline, expressing what are you're interested in: *Ridgewalking/surveying/mapping known and unknown caves on the Park property (depends on cavers familiar with the Park layout participating). *Continuing the ongoing survey WAAY in the back of the cave, near Crownover, around the sump area (Peter Sprouse heading up, but, ease of access is contingent on a couple of unknowns: water levels and whether the Crownover Causeway has silted back in or not. Unknown at this point). May have to start this up in December, once the above conditions are know. *Trail Rebuilding in the cave. Quite a few areas of the cave, Lovers Lane, in particular, were washed out this spring and need to be rebuilt. I'll be heading this up and it WILL begin in November. Could use folks with experience in building trails. There are a plethora of other projects the park has in mind for us, but, this is just the start. (They didn't want to overwhelm us!). If you have any interest or experience in the above, please give me a scream. We will be meeting at the Visitors center at Longhorn Cavern State Park 9-ish on Saturday. Please bring your own water, food, and camping gear, as camping will be available at the LCSP Picnic area both Friday and Saturday nights. Please reply, off line, if you'll be coming or have any questions. If you don't hear back from me right away, don't fret and howl in the night and think I'm ignoring you. I will be in the Guads next week and, happily, out of reach of cellphones, Facebook, TV, and the Net. Thanks and have a good weekend! Mark Alman
[Texascavers] Maverick Grotto is no more ?
The website of the Maverick Grotto states that the grotto is inactive at the moment. Anyone out there care to comment on whether this is simply the summer doldrums or indicative of a more serious situation for the grotto. Jerry.
Re: [Texascavers] Maverick Grotto is no more ?
I don't think we've had a meeting since about this time last year, we lost our chairman and lack of interest never replaced him. We do have 2 other grotto's in the same area, DFW and Cowtown. [Texascavers] Fwd: Calcite Rafts - Compiling information on sites and pictures
Forwarded by Mixon: Begin forwarded message: From: Patricia A. Beddows patri...@earth.northwestern.edu List-Post: texascavers@texascavers.com Date: October 21, 2010 6:51:31 PM CDT Subject: Calcite Rafts - Compiling information on sites and pictures Reply-To: Gregory Lehn lehng1...@gmail.com, Patricia Beddows patri...@earth.northwestern.edu Hello to all of you ! I hope you are all doing very well. Life is advancing well here at Northwestern University. My position is hectic since I am wearing the hat of the Assistant Chair, but so far every month has included very rewarding events and accomplishments. Ed and I bought a house this summer so we are certainly settling in more seriously now in the city of Evanston, just north of Chicago. I am sending out a big group email with the goal of picking your collective brains for information on calcite rafts. The reason for this interest is in support of Greg Lehn who is a PhD student I am working with. In our graduate program, the students must develop two research proposals, and for his second project he is examining the formation of calcite rafts, environmental conditions reflected in the physical and chemical characteristics of the material, and the ability to generate high resolution records of environmental change from them. As you know me, you can guess that the test-location is the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Would you be able to share: - where (region or specific cave) you have ever seen calcite rafts forming, and if they accumulating in significant quantities. Please describe. - where in your caving and research experience there are NO calcite rafts; - any pictures of calcite rafts you might have! Any scale of picture is welcome from SEM to a cave chamber; - any literature on calcite rafts - particularly older and non- indexed literature that might be hard to find. Greg will be codifying this information onto a map, and your observations on calcite rafts in general will be very helpful. Thank you very much for your time, Trish _ Dr. Patricia A. [Texascavers] Jill Orr Party and Earth's Birthday Party Reminder

The party is at the Schindel's house at 11310 Whisper Dawn, San Antonio. Phone is 210-479-2151. This is a pot luck affair and all cavers are welcome. We'll have the grill going. In addition, it is Earth's Birthday (the night before October 23, 4004 BC) so dress accordingly. Geary and Sue.

[Texascavers] New Project! Inner Space Caverns
Let it never be said that there aren't enough opportunities to go caving in Texas! Between all of our existing TSA projects (CBSP, Gov't Canyon, Longhorn), the new Devils River Project, TSS' Lake Amistad Project, the DFWG's Spring Creek Cave project, and a load of other less publicized projects out there, just pick a weekend and there will be something to do and somewhere to go. As long as they're announced here and entered into the wonderful TSA Calendar. Which leads us to our next new Project! I began discussions over a month ago, during a sojourn to Longhorn, and after having given a cave talk to a large group of Boy Scout leaders near Salado. The general manager and landowner were very interested in beginning volunteer activities with the TSA at this spectacular cave and, IMHO, one of the best show caves in the Southwest. Here's what they initially would like for us to do: Power Washing the trails - After hours (they close at 5:30) and using their equipment. Rubber boots or tennis shoes recommended. Algae cleanup from formations - Ditto, but if you have resto equipment, you're welcome to bring it. I'm thinking this would be a Friday night and/or a Saturday night project, for as long as it takes or folks are interested, and they also have graciously volunteered to take volunteers on a wild cave tour, either Saturday day or Sunday AM. No dates have been set, as I'm just trying to gauge the interest level. This would be an excellent project for college cavers, due to it's proximity to Austin (and DFW, for that matter). Please contact me offline and I'll put you down. Thanks again and hope to hear from YOU! Mark
