Re: [Texascavers] Scott Harden
Thanks Ben, I did not know that. Logan McNatt lmcn...@austin.rr.com On 3/21/2015 1:33 PM, Ben Hutchins via Texascavers wrote: It's worth noting that Scott pioneered sampling groundwater animals from stream cobbles in Texas. In the state, he did this decades before anyone would try again, and he found 'cave' animals in places like Hondo Creek. As a result, if you look at a list of Texas cave animals, you will find several species with names like Lirceolus hardeni and Mexiweckelia hardeni. He was a graduate from UT and a very active caver in the 70-80’s. He spent a few years caving in the Austin area, made numerous trips to Mexico, then moved back to San Antonio, and was actively caving there for many years. He spent many years caring for his ailing parent in the 90’s and up until his mom died in 2011. His health had been declining over the past few years. He constantly emailed his friends with humorous, goofy, and insulting emails numerous times each day, and when those emails stopped, and he wouldn’t answer his phone several of us were concerned. One of his friends went to his house, and after he didn’t get a response, he called the police who eventually discovered Scott dead inside. I am planning to host a memorial / celebration of his life at my house Saturday April 18^th starting at 6:30pm. Anyone interested please RSVP so we’ll know how to contact you with more details as we get closer. [Texascavers] Nebo flashlight
Not usually one to write this sort of stuff, but I just stopped by the hardware store bought this on a whim: https://www.nebotools.com/prod_details.php?id=31cid=16subid=94subsubcid=45 I like it because it's the same width as the body of a 2 x AA Maglight looks like it'll be helmet-mountable with zip ties because it takes a single AA battery, the kind I already have in my cave pack all the time for my mag lights my camera flashes. It seems sturdy (time will tell). The clip is sturdy enough, but comes off, which is probably for the best. I compared it side by side with my Sten it's about as bright as the Sten on the 2nd setting, though with a more concentrated spot quite a bit more blue-ish in color. Seems like a great backup light for $9.99. [Texascavers] Finally, the Beauty of France's Chauvet Cave Makes its Grand Public Debut :
Thanks, Jerry. That sure sounds like a very impressive job of creating an artificial cave. Inevitably, the discovery of Chauvet Cave gave rise quite quickly to a couple of coffee-table books. Chauvet Cave: The Discovery of the World's Oldest Paintings, by Chauvet, Deschamps, and Hillaire, 1996, seems to be out of print. So, apparently, is a paperback reprint from 2001. Chauvet Cave: The Art of Earliest Times, edited by Jean Clottes, 2003, is also out of print. Such coffee-table art books seldom stay in print for long. They end up on remainder tables within a year or so. Both books are available used.-- Mixon Dum vivimus, vivamus!
