[Texascavers] a ride to Convention with a blueray DVD player?

2016-07-06 Thread via Texascavers

Anybody driving to Ely that could bring a blueray DVD player ? We have the
opportunity to show some wonderful 3-D videos showing the most scenic parts of
Cuevas del Bellemar in Cuba. The player should have a HDMI output to interface
with the 3-D TV that someone else will bring, but I think they all have that.

I have seen the 3-D videos in Cuba and they are most spectacular. One was
important in getting the socialist government to change their plans to build a
major housing development over the most spectacular parts of the cave. Esteban
Grau, a Cuban caver, will be giving a talk in the conservation session about
this successful effort that was mounted by the Cuban cavers.

[Texascavers] Road-trip story

2016-07-06 Thread David via Texascavers
This is a personal story, by David Locklear.

I was in Arcola, Texas south of Houston this morning pondering what to do
with my day as nothing on my to-do list was urgent, and all was monotonous
stuff like chores.

So having seen Aubri's post about an exciting caving presentation. That
seemed do-able.

I decided I would go to downtown Houston and do a delivery and tie up some
loose ends on work related stuff and by 4 p.m., I was road-bound northwest
on Hwy 290. Hit construction all the way to Waller County, meaning almost
an hour of driving just to get out of Harris County on 290.

I probably could have made it to Sao Paoul's restaurant on time, but I
stopped in Brenham and frolicked there for 20 minutes. ( I rent an
enormous rental storage unit there, that I have been paying rent on for
over 10 years. ).

Anyways, I got to Sao Paulos as every caver was leaving. I was wiped out,
and needed to catch my breath before making the treacherous hike from there
to the meeting, so I only waved hello at cavers and left.

2 cavers guided me to the meeting as I would have never found it.

There was one world-class surprise program and 2 other impressive programs.

It was announced that the property with the promising sinkhole, known as
Kiwi Sink, has a new but unknown landowner.

Bill Mixon announced the new AMCS Newsletter.

It is always great seeing old-timers that I first met 31 years ago.

There were faces that I do no know: Patty, Sam, Mary, Andy, and others
whose names I haven't yet memorized, and many other cavers that I have only
briefly met a few times.

I hope to make another meeting someday. I can only guess that was my 11th
or 12th meeting since my first around 1987.

I headed to the posse. I tried to socialize, but I had my mind on the
road-trip home.

I wish I could stay for the Linux Convention on Friday morning as that is
only 33 hours from now. But the realities of life are that I have to go
back to Houston and look for work tomorrow and Friday, and then drive my 11
year old daughter to Arlington on Friday night to visit my
very-estranged-biological father who I have barely spoken a word to in 24
years.

I am fairly certain I will not make the NSS Howdy Party, so I won't see
cavers again for till either TCR, or TSA 2017 Spring Convention

Re: [Texascavers] Mexican blind cave Astyanax fish

2016-07-06 Thread Diana Tomchick via Texascavers
This may be a bit late, but anyone that would like a PDF copy of this article
can contact me off-list.

And of course some of this research may have relevance to human health—we are
not so different from the cave fishes on an evolutionary scale, after all. Plus
there are fewer ethical dilemmas to research on fishes versus humans (and it’s
cheaper, too!).
