[Texascavers] Trip-report #1 of 50

2016-07-15 Thread David via Texascavers
I updated my CL rider page to include Austin area

http://austin.craigslist.org/rid/5684934740.html

In theory, my road-trip is feasible to Flagstaff and back.
So my realistic goal is just to have a nice road-trip and be back in
Houston late next week.

I am already 6 hours behind schedule. I plan to dig thru my rental
storage unit in Brenham here shortly, and see if I can find anything I
might need for a big road-trip.

I think that I left town with nothing but the clothes I am wearing and a
set of jumper cables, as I did not get to go home after I got off work.

2016-07-15 Thread Mallory via Texascavers
David, I would like to donate $15 to your road trip endeavor and Chris Lafferty
will match my $15. The second you arrive safely at the Howdy Party we will mail
you a check. Don't fret that this will somehow take $ from caving, we're both
NSS Team 404 members. :) This is a selfish offer--see, we're kind of addicted
to your stories. I was up in Alaska last week and your emails kept us
entertained on the long road trip from Denali down to Soldotna. Neither of us
can make NSS convention...so our living vicariously is up to you! Don't let us
down, man...

There is a 4 % chance I am leaving Houston tonight ( Friday ) and driving to
Vegas in my new 2008 Sequoia SUV.

I am tentatively offering a one-way ride to Vegas as I pass thru Austin or San
Antonio. I have room for 3 people.

Waiting on my jerk customers to pay me, before I can commit.

Not planning on making it to Ely unless stars suddenly line up in a divine
miraculous way, meaning 3 supernovas would have to suddenly appear forming a
perfect Equilateral Triangle bright above the western horizon.

[Texascavers] CNN article about Life on Mar discussing water and life underground

2016-07-15 Thread Geary Schindel via Texascavers
Thought you all might like to see this articles as it discusses possible life
on Mars, something that Penny Boston has discussed on many occasions.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/15/health/water-life-mars-rsl/index.html

I first heard about the possibility of life on Mars, and why, from a
presentation made by Dr. Calvin Alexander when he was the Edwards Aquifer
Authority's Distinguished Lecturer in 2007. He discusses similarities between
the water chemistry of some of our deep brines and thoughts on water chemistry
on Mars. You can see his talk which he did as part of the NSS Webinar Series on
the NSS Web Page at http://caves.org/webinars/index.shtml
Dr. Boston also had an excellent webinar titled Caves Across the Solar system
which can be found at the link on the NSS Web page at
www.caves.org or the link above.
