Re: [Texascavers] Research finds porcupines are prominent in many south-central Texas caves :

2016-08-25 Thread Logan McNatt via Texascavers

Very interesting study, thanks Jerry.

Cavers spend a lot of time in the wild and encounter lots of
wildlife--both fauna and flora. For the interested, I highly
recommend the book Texas Natural History: A Century of Change,
by David J. Schmidly, Texas Tech University Press, 2002.  The first
half of the book is an introduction to and reprint of the long
out-of-print Biological Survey of Texas, 1889-1905,
by Vernon Bailey--an amazing quest. In the second half, Schmidly
documents the changes that have occurred to the landscapes/flora and
mammalian fauna during the 20th Century, with photos and
distribution maps comparing then and now.

In the 1889-1905 Biological Survey, porcupines were recorded only in
the NW panhandle (Tascosa County) and the Trans-Pecos Davis Mtns
area. The current range (as of ca. 2000) is all but the eastern 1/3
of the state, and deep south Texas.

There are even photos of a jaguar killed in 1903 near Goldthwaite
(Mills County)--that's 100 miles NW of Austin!--and another one
killed near San Benito (Cameron County) in 1946.  Also in Cameron
County...an ocelot killed 1924, and a jaguarundi road kill in 1986.

A porcupine showed up in my next-door neighbor's yard in early Sept
2012, one block south of a busy highway (Ben White Blvd) in south
central Austin.  I called a licensed wildlife trapper named Rio
Tenango who easily netted it and released it on a distant ranch that
accepts such urban rescues. Small world-- Rio recognized my house
because he had been here for a UT Grotto vertical training in my
back yard years before.

Re: [Texascavers] Research finds porcupines are prominent in many south-central Texas caves

2016-08-25 Thread Mark Minton via Texascavers
I've seen porcupines in Texas caves as far back as the '80s. I also
remember a couple of times that there were unusually large numbers of
dead porcupines on the highways in central and west Texas. It was like
they were involved in mass migrations and got caught in the crossfire.
(I've similarly seen large numbers of migrating tarantulas, with lots
smashed on the roads in Texas.)

Interestingly, we also found a couple of porcupine carcasses very near
the Last Bash entrance to J2 in Oaxaca, Mexico. That particular entrance
is _way_ out in the boonies, so whatever the porcupines were doing
there, it was unlikely to be related to human activity. Maybe they just
like caves. :-)

This scholarship has been established to encourage small scale karst research
by geology and geography undergraduate students. Two annual awards of $500 are
available. The applicant must be an NSS member. Example projects include dye
tracing, spatial analysis of karst landforms, water quality of springs and cave
waters, cave sediment analyses, etc. Applications describing the proposed
research are limited to two pages of text. Send or email your application to
John Hoffelt, 208 Cheatham Ave., Smyrna, Tennessee 37167-4766;
mossy...@comcast.net. A letter of recommendation
by the professor overseeing the research should be included in the proposal.
Application deadline is December 15th, 2016 with awards being announced the

The Bexar Grotto has a monthly dig project at the LaChance Sinkhole on Sunday,
August 28 at 9 am. Location is near New Braunfels off of Rt 306, west. There is
a limit to the number of folks the property and sinkholes can handle so I need
a head county. We’re going to limit the number of folks attending to about 20.
I need to have a head count on who is going since the grotto has donated some
funds to cover a lunch/picnic after the dig. The LaChance’s want to know so
they can also plan. There will be digging and some socializing going on. (Yes,
some of my caver friends need to be socialized).

We’re looking for strong back - weak mind types but I also have some positions
open for folks that would like to try their hand at management – maybe Rob and
Jess will bring their Cat O Nine Tails as a motivator.

We’ll also have swimming in the Guadalupe River nearby after the event..

Here is what you need to know. – Please read carefully.

There are four sinkholes on the property. Two digs are in caves and two are
surface digs.

This is a good opportunity to help them with improving the drainage of their
property as the sinkholes now back up and flood their house during heavy rains.
These are some of the larger sinkholes in the area and drain more than a square
mile. There is lots of potential there.

Depth to groundwater is approximately 250 feet so we have a ways to go to reach
the water table. The location most likely drains to San Marcos Springs so there
is a lot of potential. The sinkholes were taking water this Sunday so they may
be a bit muddy.

We’ll start digging around 9 am and knock off around 1 pm for a picnic. The
grotto has donated some funds for burger and sausage. Please consider bringing
a dish.

After eating, we’ll head over to the river to clean up some and go swimming.
They have access to a private beach along the river.

Bring helmet, light, boots, gloves, drinks, short shovel, spud bar, 5 gallon
buckets, rock shaving equipment, etc. if you have it.

I need to know on Wednesday whether you want to go. There is also a limit to
the size of the group. When you let me know if you’re going, I’ll send you the
