[Texascavers] The real NSS Convention

2017-06-24 Thread David via Texascavers
I can only guess that the real cavers at the real NSS Convention
are now packing up and heading to go caving, or home.

I see on Facebook, several Texas cavers were awarded prestigious awards
for demonstrating their real caving skills.I am proud of them and
admire them all.I hope to be their friend some day.

There were also some photos from The 2017 Campground Party, an
event that I am really sad that I missed.

I did see someone post the "Best Photo" of the Photo Salon, which
was 2 cavers in a large room with few formations and a blue pool of
water.

It is my opinion, that if the NSS ever holds another convention in the
Chihuahuan Desert or the Sonoran Desert in the summertime, that they
should just rent a large resort motel, and try to hold it near a commercial
cave.
Rio Rancho was too big of a town to hold the event. The Star Center was
way overkill for a event for 600 people who were scattered about all over
town
in motels. I can only guess that there were about 40 campsites of
cavers,
and really only one grotto camp - Groad Hollow. It would have been nice
if the entire motel that I stayed in was booked with cavers sharing rooms,
and
that an event was held at that motel. But that would have required lots
of
organization on some volunteer's part and lots of money and neither were
available.I had no idea I was even staying there until just before the
Howdy Party started. I wish I could have booked up a room there weeks in
advance.
But that motel was still too far from the sessions.

The whole idea of holding the convention in Rio Rancho was so that cavers
in the
Albuquerque area and other cavers in New Mexico could easily attend the
convention and cavers in Arizona, and Colorado and West Texas could drive
there
without much drama. Did that happen ?I think so.

Had the convention been in Dallas, I still would have spent $ 900 and my
car would
have still broke down. Had the event been in Houston, how many
southeast Texas
cavers would have attended ? Maybe 10. Who knows ? I would have had
fun in
Rio Rancho in the fall or the spring. But I was not there long enough
to see any
reason to ever go back to Rio Rancho.

The person that I travelled with may never speak "publicly" of our journey,
so I am going to make
a humorous attempt to pretend that I am him for a moment, and I will write
his trip report below
for him.

I first met Locklear in the mid-80's at TCR, but I did not distinguish him
from the dozens of other
new cavers then. In 1987, he lived in Dallas and came to all the DFW
Grotto meetings. My first impression
was that he was a real knucklehead, but that turned out to be an
under-statement.
I could not understand why people paid any attention to him.I never
ever followed his reports,
but would hear tales around the caver campfire of his hitchhiking journeys
to the Guads
and the Sierra Madres. So around 2005, I decided to give him a chance
and take him on a road-trip. Just an hour into the road-trip, I wanted to
strangle him. About 5 years ago, my company transferred me to a remote
area about an hour from where Locklear lived. I could not get him off
my back. He
was like a leach, in the middle of my lower back where I could not reach it
to pull it off.
Fortunately, I did not have to ever ever worry about him drinking my beer,
so that is
the only reason I ever tolerated him. Last week, I felt certain he was
going to hitch-hike
to Albuquerque, and since I was possibly going for 3 days, I thought I
would pick him up, but only
if I found him laying on the edge of the highway being eaten by vultures.
   Unfortunately, he called me and
I accidentally answered the phone. He told me where he would be in Decatur
and I could pick him up there
instead of the middle of nowhere. I should have never gone to Decatur.
That was 100 miles off my route, each way. After a couple of shots of
Cuervo,
I was calmed down enough to let him get in my truck. He had 8 large
duffle bags with him.But even more
surprisingly was this odd looking young fellow who looked like Cheech
Marin, but wearing $ 500 French designer clothing, mixed with some hood-rat
street clothing, caring a beat up horse saddle and an old stringy
rope.

Man, do I regret not bringing my OSHA-rated ear-protection. He would
not shut up.He was like Forrest Gump talking about Boxes of Chocolate
and sh*t for 9 straight hours.Fortunately, the young wanna-be urban
cowboy, never mumbled a word, but was more like a zombie riding in the
backseat, that I had to keep an eye
on in my rear-view mirror the whole way to Albuquerque. If you ever do
take with Locklear, on a road-trip
put him in a straight-jacket, as he will attempt to put all his stinky
musty duffle bags inside your vehicle instead of strapped to the roof where
they belong. And whatever you do, do not ever let him drive, or you will
wake up 300 miles off course in Boystown. And don't even
