[Texascavers] virtual ridgewalking

2017-07-02 Thread David via Texascavers
NASA released an interesting aerial photo today from Mars.

It features some very unique geological formations.

If you click on the link below and then click on the image once
it should expand.

https://static.uahirise.org/images/2017/details/cut/ESP_050406_1585-2.jpg

There are some round crater like formations that all have a pointed slope
heading
towards a crater. I spent some time looking at this image and did not
see anything
that might be a cave, but there are plenty of opportunities for either a
shelter cave or
a natural bridge.

I have no idea what the scale is of the photo, but a wild guess would be
about 20 miles
across. So whatever those formations are, they are probably really large.

The news story is calling this area the Niagara Falls of Mars, and they are
claming the
formations are due to a lava flow. I am not sure if I agree with that,
but there does
seem to be erosion caused by something, maybe sand-blasting from the witn
and the
dust in the air. The falls look more like glacial calving to me.
Either way, it looks like
a very inhospitable place to live.

This image may also be in 3D on another web-site.

Sheesh Locklear you have a Black Cloud over you. Why don't you get Savas or
one of the caver mechanics to fix your Lemon. They are most trustworthy.
Karst Walker for one has fixed my vehicle on occasion between trips to
Menard. You whine too much and are loosing credibility.

[Texascavers] internet video related

2017-07-02 Thread David via Texascavers
For those of you who will not watch YouTube for security reasons,

someone has devised a way to watch any Youtube video by just changing 3
letters
in the URL from "you" to "hook."

Below is an example ( using a new caving video ):

  https://www.hooktube.com/watch?v=QQ8UtzMmM2o

Unfortunately, it will only play 720p, so you loose some quality.

I have no idea if this is a good or bad web-site, or if it really does what
it advertises, or if there are better ways to watch a YouTube video.

Many years ago that would have been my father's job. He would not have gone
down the drop but would have pulled the pipe out with his pickup. My father
was Peck Young, the area windmill man. He installed that Aermotor windmill
which stands over O9 well and took care of all of the windmills for the Noelke
family which leases university land in the area. I was my dad's helper in the
Summers and I have been to many Noelke windmills but never to O9 well. I do
remember that he told me once that he slid down the pipe. He did not say how
he got out - probably rode up on the hook at the end of a cable as his helper
pulled him out with the pickup.

Pardon my nostalgic diversion. If anyone is interested, I have written up some
stories about windmilling with my father on our website. Contact me off of
TexasCavers and I will send you the link.
