[Texascavers] NSS YouTube Channel

2019-02-28 Thread David
The NSS now has 32 videos on its YouTube Channel. 10 of them are around
an hour in length.

If you take into consideration their videos combined with the likes of
cavers like Derek Bristol, there
is just a wealth of information about caving on YouTube.

It would seem appropriate in 2019, to point or direct a novice caver to a
list of particular cave-related videos to
watch, before they go on their first serious caving trip.

But the list doesn't stop there.

For $ 2, they can watch the BBC episode on caves

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUFq-oGebyA=ELcVkdDvjO1YE=4

One could almost spend a life-time now watching caving videos on the
internet.

Here is just an example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZLMg5CsTI4

I would bet that there will be more caving videos on the web in March and
even more in April.
It is likely we are going to see more videos recorded in 1440p, and
eventually 4K, someday.

I guess if I can afford to someday live in a nursing home, it will give me
something to look
forward to.

The bar has been set. Cavers wanting to make an underground video
should make an effort to look at
some of the videos that already exist.

Re: [Texascavers] [SWR CAVERS] House Bill 496 - Sinkhole Mapping Act of 2019 :

2019-02-28 Thread George Veni
Linda,

I have been in contact with Congressman Soto’s office and the USGS team that
would conduct the project if the bill is approved. I know the leader of the
USGS team and they have designed a good proposal. I’ve worked with him and
vouch for the high quality of his work.

This project does not include sinkholes caused by fracking because sinkholes
are not caused by fracking. There is a lot confusion and misunderstanding about
fracking. Sinkholes have formed below oil, gas, and other wells, whether they
were fracked or not, for reasons unrelated to fracking. Many such sinkholes can
be classified as anthropogenic, meaning that collapse would not have happened
if not for human activities that made collapse possible. Mine collapses are a
good example. The proposed study does not include such sinkholes.

In my view, the legislation for this project should be supported and I’ll be
sending a letter of support from NCKRI later today. Because the bill doesn’t
include anthropogenic sinkholes is not a reason to not support it. That would
be like saying “I don’t support research for a new cancer screening technique
because it doesn’t include heart disease.” Both are worthy causes, but the
methods needed to study one are completely different from studying the other.
Likewise, at a glance, an anthropogenic collapse may look like a karstic
collapse, but the processes that form them are very different and thus the
tools to predict them are very different.

You wonder if this issue affects New Mexico and it does. NCKRI completed a
study last year of 22 miles of highway experiencing sinkhole collapse, to
better design the reconstruction of the highway in order to minimize and
prevent future sinkhole collapses. Beyond that, a 2015 USGS study found that
sinkholes cost the US over $300 million each year in damages. This is a minimum
figure because it is based on state highway department data where not all
states identified the cost of sinkholes vs. other repairs and maintenance, and
it does not include sinkholes under homes and other buildings, nor the loss of
property and the occasional life. If you consider all of that, I believe that
the cost will easily exceed $1 billion/year.

The proposed project is very worth supporting. By identifying sinkhole-prone
areas, it will allow better land planning that will reduce the cost of sinkhole
impacts and pay for itself many times over in money, time, and maybe lives
saved.

(1) study the short-term and long-term mechanisms that cause sinkholes,
including extreme storm events, prolonged droughts causing shifts in water

and :

(2) develop maps that depict zones that are at greater risk of sinkhole

Beth Cortright is back with part 2 of the Grand Canyon Expedition. In the fall
of 2018, two expedition teams returned to Double Bopper Cave in Grand Canyon
National Park to continue survey and exploration of the extensive system.
Through their efforts, the cave is now 40.6 miles long and has climbed into the
top ten longest caves in the United States. The newest discoveries include many
mummified mammals, an entire wall of gypsum hair, and more iron foam and gypsum
flowers than anyone could imagine. Survey teams documented incredible boreholes
and unique formations in the caves, while avoiding bark scorpions and flash
floods on the surface. This presentation will show highlights of the October
2018 expedition and give an update on the Double Bopper Cave system.
Beth Cortright:
Beth Cortright has been caving for about 11 years. She began exploring
underground while attending college and primarily caved in south central
Kentucky, where she learned to survey. During this time, Beth also got involved
with a group surveying caves in collaboration with archaeologists at Maya sites
in the Yucatan, Mexico. Through her adventures with the caving group in
Kentucky and Mexico, Beth was invited on a weeklong expedition into Lechuguilla
Cave in Carlsbad Caverns National Park in 2011. Beth has since returned to
Lechuguilla many times, and to many other New Mexico caves as well, for more
day trips and expeditions. Beth also participates in expeditions to Montana’s
Bob Marshall Wilderness and Grand Canyon National Park.
