Subject: [Texascavers] CoA William Cave Resolution Passed

Good Morning Cavers,

I have fantastic news to share with you on this William H. Russel Austin Cave
Heritage Day:

The resolution which was on today’s Austin City Council agenda as item#: 48 has
passed 

Approve a resolution directing the City Manager to initiate proceedings under
City Code Section 14-1-39 renaming the Blowing Sink Research Management Area to
the William H. Russell Karst Preserve, to develop a land management plan for
the tract, to prepare a report on existing cave and karst feature projects and
programs and a memorandum of understanding between relevant departments
addressing cave restoration and water quality monitoring for caves on
City-owned land.

There is still a process that shall be followed for the renaming to become in
effect. I’ll keep everyone appraised of progress as I know of it.

Addressing our request for the City of Austin to engage the local caving
community as the most knowledgeable stakeholders in further exploration and
documentation of its karst resources is language directing the various City
departments involved in cave management to work together with steakholders -
that’s us cavers - and report back in October of this year and January of next.
I am very optimistic that this process will be fruitful. I will keep everyone
updated as this process proceeds, particularly when there are opportunities for
Cavers to speak up and be heard.

Thank you to everyone who supported the petition.

The smell of victory is in the air.

So I guess it’s time to tell this story. Wednesday afternoon I was happily
finishing up on a shaper , think of big router, the last few wooden pieces of
the doors and windows for our home in Mexico and looking forward to gluing them
all up and being a big step towards completing the house. A millisecond later I
was unbelievably looking at a ruined right hand. A few minutes later after
doing my best to staunch the blood flow I was at the clinic in Real. The doctor
on duty took one look and said hospital in Matehuala an hour away. I stopped on
the way out of town at a friends house. Luckily she was home and her boyfriend
and she drove me to the hospital. Basically they sewed up a couple of arteries
and assayed the damage, by the way with no painkillers . I guess just trying to
see how tough I am. The doctor said I would need to go to a specialist in
Saltillo or San Luis Potosí. They gave me antibiotics, pain meds, and a tetanus
shot. When we left the hospital my friends boyfriend asked if I’d prefer to fly
back to Texas. He offered to fly me in his Fairchild turbo prop. My response to
this was, “You’ve got a plane?” Totally unassuming man and now a saint . He
arranged for an employee to meet us halfway to Saltillo. This man drove me to a
Holiday Inn where we had reservations. I walked in the lobby looking like
someone out of a Quentin Tarentino movie. Complete with cartels and sicarios.
The desk clerk looked up and said NO ROOMS, I protested that I had a
reservation. NO ROOMS!! We got the same response across the street at a
Hampton. At the next one I gave Juan my wallet and said, “This time you get the
room and I’ll go in s side door.” I ended up having to go to a hospital in
Saltillo because I started hemorrhaging again during the night. The next
morning the driver picked me up and after a stop at Walmart to buy clothes,of
course they didn’t fit anyway, by 8:30 we were airborne on the way to San
Antonio. At SA the immigration guy took one look, said “I don’t want to know”,
and waved me through. Gale in the meanwhile had found the top micro surgeon in
the country with the aid of our next door neighbor who is a friend of an
associate of the surgeon Dr. Fernando Levaro. Gale picked me up in SA and we
drove to Houston. Within 10 minutes of walking into his office we were meeting
with Dr. Levaro and within 1 hr I was in surgery. The surgery lasted 6 hours. I
can’t say enough good things about this guy. He’s by the way one if those
Mexicans they’re sending us. At the follow up today he told me he expected me
to get back to close to 90% function. Skin grafts, nerve repair, tendons, bone
fractures, vessel repair, and evidently I learned Spanish because I was
speaking it while I was under anesthesia. I can’t begin to express the
gratitude I have for every person I came across in the last two days, both
friends and strangers. I’d post photo, but I’m not that cruel.

A caver posted 4 helmet-cam video clips 4 days ago on YouTube of what
looks like them caving in ISC with
quiet a bit of water in the passages. Is that anybody here ?

Also,

Back on June 9th, there was a celebration at ISC.

https://scontent-dfw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/13391432_10154311343212853_8262470945045117389_o.jpg

Prof. Lundelius allegedly gave a presentation.

Did anybody you know go to this ?

Are there any cavers or former cavers in the photo above ?

David Locklear

P.S.

ISC was my first cave tour in 1969.Probably the summer of 1969.
My next cave tour was
Louis & Clark Caverns in Idaho, in the spring of 1970.

I have been to the Squid Room twice with Mr. Jasek, once around 1987
and again around 1995.

[Texascavers] Bustamante Project 2006

2007-03-26 Thread Bob Burnett
Orion, Jan, Rune, and Susan visited Bustamante this past weekend to meet with
the mayor and talk with Don Felipe about the project scheduled for February
18-20, 2006.

All agreed that the project is a go.

Orion explained this year's activities to the mayor. The mayor approved and
said that even if work had begun on developing the road up to the cave, this
should not interfere with the project because they would not be working on the
weekend.

The group visited the 3 hotels in Bustamante. All rooms at the Ancira will be
available at $35 each, except that the 4 rooms with one double bed will be $30.
Contact Jan at knox_...@hotmail.com to reserve your room.

We visited La Casita, but the owner wasn't there and the gardner said that a
room with 2 double beds is $48. There are 20 rooms. The phone # listed on the
Bustamante web site is (829) 246 03 16.

We got a business card from Hotel Chimenea's Inn. The phone numbers listed are
(829) 246 04 43 or 245 02 43. The Chimenea's appears to have 7 or 8 rooms. No
one was there so we didn't get a price.

Don Felipe agreed to provide the Sunday night banquet at the Ancira at a cost
of $8.00 per person, including non-alcoholic drinks and a cash bar.

Attached is an updated list of Project Organizers. Still lacking are crew
chief's for graffiti removal along the road, a parking lot attendant at the
upper parking lot, and campground security. Also, we will need vehicles to
transport volunteers from El Cono to the upper parking lot.

Please contact Orion or Rune if you are interested in any of these positions.
