Re: [Texascavers] Sierra Madre Road-trip ?

2017-12-21 Thread Jon Cradit via Texascavers
On the drive in to work this morning I was listening to NPR and the interview
with David Sedaris and Ira Glass about the 25 Years Of 'Santaland Diaries'.
Then I got to the computer and read Davids tail of life and I thought, Texas
Cavers have their own David (Sedaris) Locklear.
You’re missing your calling David. Or are you just warming up on us before you
make the big break?

Subject: [Texascavers] Sierra Madre Road-trip ?

From David Locklear

My tentative road-trip next week is unraveling into tiny pieces - not that
anyone probably cares.

I have decided to take Mr. Loving's advice. It is painful. I am
hyper-ventilating.

I have decided only to purchase an annual Mexican car insurance policy, or
otherwise I am not going to attempt any more spur-of-the-moment Mexican
road-trips.

I almost did it today, but AAA just could not pry the $ 405 from my
stingy-grip, so I left their office feeling totally bummed out.

Getting off work should not be a major problem.

The Sequoia should be able to handle a road-trip.

Getting on Hwy 59 southbound out of Sugarland by December 23rd, is going to be
impossible. Even the 24th looks difficult. Apparently, there is some
holiday going on.

On a not so related note,

All my predictions two weeks ago for 2018, have already come true. So I will
have to come up with some more.

Safe travels. Vaya con dinero.

Folks,

The Texas Hydro Geo Workshop is coming along nicely and it is even bigger and
better than ever, we have 40 modules and about 85 folks helping present. We
have two drill rigs, three different modules running geophysics, caving and
cave mapping modules, and lots of hands on activities. Price is $60 and
includes Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, Dinner Sunday night, Keynote
speaker, a geology related book, T shirt, and three contests. Should be lots of
fun. Here is a list of modules. For more information, you can also visit the
web page at http://caves.org/grotto/bexargrotto/HydroGeo/ I've attached the
flyer for the event along with the program guide. Please feel free to
distribute this across the department. Feel free to distribute this freely.

Thanks,

[Texascavers] The 'underground astronaut' in search of ancient bones - New chapter of an old story

2017-08-30 Thread Jon Cradit via Texascavers
Elen Feuerriegel risked her life to recover bones hidden in a cave below the
rolling hills of South Africa. What she found helped open a new chapter in the
story of human evolution.

Four years ago, Dr Elen Feuerriegel was trawling the internet when she saw an
ad.
The ad was unusual - it asked for three or four people for a short-term
project, but they had to be skinny, preferably small and could not be
claustrophobic.
They also needed to be fit, have some caving experience, a good attitude and be
a team player.
And they had to be willing to work in cramped quarters.
Elen was intrigued.
The ad described her to a tee.
"I sat on it for an hour or two, thinking 'well if I fit the bill I should
really apply' but I didn't think I'd have a chance in heck that I'd even be
considered," she says.
"And then I thought 'I would be a fool if I let this opportunity go by without
trying.' It cost me nothing, so why not?"
So the 24-year-old Australian PhD student sent her resume - and her
measurements - to a man she'd never met in South Africa.

At many large caver gatherings, there is often a live performance of musicians.

Arranging this performance is often an expensive logistical headache, and the
end result is never perfect, and there is always a critic or two afterwards
saying what an awful waste of time and money that was.

I have seen a much better way to do this.

Last night, I was at a music performance where each musician in the band
appeared individually on separate 4K monitors performing separately from the
band.

The individual videos were "synced" together using some video software that
appeared to be running in Apple OS X.

The show was pre-recorded and looped, but it was an awesome experience.

All the 65" monitors were set up vertically on a stage near each other, and
each musician performed near-life-size ( maybe feet not showing on the taller
members )

The sound was perfect. And each musician was seen at their best.

Watching a caver-rock band do such a performance would be awe-inspiring and
very entertaining.

This would allow more attendees to see the performance and see it in pieces at
their leisure.

This concept would allow the band time to arrange a fascinating performance.
And the band would get to enjoy the caver gathering instead of working at it.

I hereby propose on June 24, 2016, that someone seriously look into do this at
2017 caver gatherings and beyond.

what a glorious time travel video. every part was familiar and made me laugh.
I started caving on the cusp of do it yourself, sew your own seat harness,
cobble together gear and bop a pit, golondrinas in my case. golden days.
indestructible rope technique at its finest.

most recently I hauled out my seat harness and some gold line to rig a rope
across my steeply pitched roof. climbed up with a jumar and a chainsaw to
remove a tree that had set itself down on the roof while I was out of town.
Piece by wood stove piece I cut and lowered to Don Broussard. Finally I was
down to a 6 foot 200+ pound chunk still dangling from the main trunk. Don and
I wrapped it with rope, ran the rope thru another tree and friction wrapped it
to a third. Toes at the very edge of the roof, leaning out 45 degrees, solely
supported by the jumar on a daisy chain, I gingerly cut away at the limb. Not
sure I’ve ever been quite so adrenalized on rope. When the wood gave it swung
gently past the roof and we lowered it to the deck. Only damage - a dent in
the ridge cap. Nice to be back in harness.

Kittinger was the dinner speaker at the New Braunfels convention.
The show is about the high-altitude balloon tests that would later lead to
Kittinger's record-setting leap from over 102,800 feet (31,300 m). In 1957, as
part of Project Manhigh, Kittinger set an interim balloon altitude record of
96,760 feet (29,490 m) in Manhigh I, for which he was awarded his first
Distinguished Flying Cross.

Folks,

I was wondering if there is someone in Texas that might have 600 feet of 9 ml
static rope and like to participate in an interesting domestic project.

Thanks,

Any of you old fart cavers have any pics from the 1981 Congress?

The UIS will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in June, and Boriz Watz
(Croatia) is preparing a video to celebrate it. He needs photos of sessions and
special events at the ICS to flesh it out.

He also needs images of early explorations in Mammoth Cave -- in the 19th and
18th centuries.

If you can help, please let me know! Soon!

Alex
