Hello Texas Cavers!

I am about to put out a call shortly for TSA convention speakers, but since
this listserv turned into "MalloryTex" temporarily for a couple of months
there last summer, I just wanted to kind of address my situation and get it
out of the way first. :)

THANK YOU ALL SOOOOO MUCH! For everything--all your caring, your support,
your interest, your patience, all the gifts/donations I recieved from
grottos and cavers in this state. I cried a lot of sad/confused tears in
the hospital, but a lot of happy tears after I saw the outpouring of
support this community sent my way. SO cool.

It's been a rough, messy year, and there's a lot still to come. For
example, the guy who hit me hasn't been convicted yet (due to endless court
resets), and there will be several court dates coming up in the coming
months, perhaps years, and for that reason I really don't want to put much
about the details of my recovery on a public listserv. However, when this
whole situation is resolved, rest assured I will shout the happy events
from the rooftops. Or maybe the top of some rope, in a pit. :) Regarding
caving, it'll be some time before I'm in the shape I used to be in, but I
am in a program called "Strength Unlimited" to try to work on some of the
physical damage from the incident, and I'm pleased with it so far. The
prognosis is WAYYYY more positive than it was last summer. :) I graduated
rehab Dec. 19th, so I do have some physical therapy/emotional therapy to
continue with, but the worst/biggest part is over. I hope to see many of
you at the TSA convention this spring. Besides being thrilled to actually
be able to make it, I'm especially excited for this convention because Rex,
my partner in survival, will be attending! This will be his first caving
gathering of any sort, and he's looking forward to seeing what I've been
rambling on about for months. So please volunteer to speak if you've got
cool content! I can guarantee at least two appreciative spectators. :)

Often, I feel a lot like a boxer after they just got
suckerpunched...confused, reeling, but ultimately just trying to get back
on my feet and soldier on. And I want to thank all of y'all for helping me
make that happen, and for reminding me who I was, and still am.

Cavingly Yours,

Mallory Mayeux
GHG Chair

You could probably figure it out by a process of elimination by getting out the
TSS files for Hays County and seeing where the caves are in that area. I
suspect, since it's on private land, the owners didn't want their names
mentioned. Also they probably weren't named because probably when the police
find out whose C4 that was, they'll probably be arrested.

Now that Mallory has brilliantly broken the ice on the Spring Convention:

The TSA Spring Convention will be here before we know it (May 2-4 at CWAN), and
one thing I didn't do well enough last year was soliciting entries in the Map
and Photo Salons and generally promoting those events. So, first of all, TSA
encourages you to consider entering any maps or photos you might have ready by
Convention for entry in these events. Keep tuned for possible special
recognition for photography in certain caves.
At the same time, I must solicit for persons who are willing to organize and
judge the Map and Photo Salons. And for others who may not want to be in
charge, but are willing to help out on this part of the Convention.

I know that the tractor shed was not the best of venues for last year's Salons,
but I'll have to defer to Tom and Mike for suggestions as to whether there is
any better location at CWAN. (BTW, the new pavilion there, finished just in
time for last year's convention, now has permanent electricity installed.)
Aside from CWAN infrastructure, does anyone have a spare large tent on the
model of those used by TSA and vendors that could house the Salons?

Thanks!

Vice Chair

Good news regarding a Salon venue already: Bill Steele has a "portable garage"
tent that is 30' X 15' and has walls on all sides that he is willing to bring
to the Convention on Friday to be set up for the photo and map salons. Please
contact me if you are willing to come a bit early and help raise this tent.
(Yes, there should be beer by then.)

I was told the last attempt to post this on TexasCavers included a faulty link.
This is directly from the author of the survey, so I hope the link works.

The link worked great if I just copied the whole link and pasted it onto my
browser.
I hope that All women cavers will respond to the survey. Maybe something good
will come from it, who knows.

Hello Cavers!
This is the first call for speakers for the 2014 TSA Spring Convention! As
many of you know, every year at the convention we have informational talks
where cavers and scientist-types volunteer to speak on a number of cave
related topics. In the past, we've had presentations on topics such as:
archaeology, cave biology, diving, geology, hydrology, cave critters,
survey trips and exploration, cave photography, restoration, safety,
history, and caving techniques. However, don't feel limited...anything
somewhat caving-related is fair game.
The spring convention will be held on May 2-4 at Cave without a Name in
Boerne, TX. Presentations will be held during the day on Saturday with a
break for lunch. Presentations are typically 15-20 minutes in length plus a
little time for audience questions, but there is plenty of flexibility in
the schedule if you would like to give a shorter or longer presentation. We
will have a laptop, projector and speakers so if you have video footage or
photos you'd like to show, along with your presentation, please do!
Camping is awesome there informational sessions will be held INSIDE the
cave. Based on last year, this will be another AWESOME TSA convention! Make
plans to attend and contact me if you have any questions or would like to
be a presenter!

Hope to see you all there!
Cavingly,
Mallory Mayeux

I don't know how far you can see in Wyoming these days but here in South
Austin on any clear day I can see for 93 million miles. On a clear night I
can see for a whole lot farther--Light Years, even, with the naked eye and
without any effort worth mentioning.
