PAZHAM VARUTHATHU

About 10 days backI went to slightly distant supermarket where Kerala items are
available. Onlytwo packets of chips were there with information slip- prepared
in 100% coconut oil.One was with sliced length wise. I had actually gone to
purchase cut chips, asliced chip cut to 2.

However I purchasedboth. On finishing the breadthwise finished, I opened the
other pack today. Itwas not crisp and slightly sweet.  Ilooked at the cover- It
was written in Malayalam “Pazham varuthathu” with English translation-Ripen
banana fried”.

I used to get ripenbanana fried in brown colour cut breadth wise from
Trivandrum. Length wisesliced is found sweeter, yellowish and folded as two or
three depending on thelength. Since it is ripen 95%, the folding might have
occurred.

A doubt occurred inme in that case why pazhampori is not folding. I myself
tried to answer- sliceis at least three times thicker for pazhampori.

In Trivandrum ripenbanana fried obtaining by 2001. It was prepared in only one
shop, near thePassport shop. For fried ripen banana chips we had to tell at
least 2 days inadvance.

I looked at the cover. It is prepared in Cochin, not in Chennai. Many shops in
Chennai prepare bananachips daily; one near Nanganallur Anjaneya temple is very
famous.

So far there are noshops preparing sarkarapuratti in Chennai. Supermarkets also
I have not seenpacked sarkarapuratti. However one shop in T nagar rarely we
gotsarkarapuratti. Some caterers serve sarkarapuratti in feasts. It is not
surewhether they prepare or get from Kerala is not clear.

While writing aboutNampoothiries I recollected about their liking for banana
chips cut to 2 afterslicing horizontally. They call it Upperi.

Sarkarapuratti ismost liked by Nampoothiries. During feasts 2 or three times
sarkapuratti isserved or in large quantities.
