[tw] Re: Setup for a personal knowledge base

2009-08-07 Thread Mark S.

I spent about 2 months reviewing dozens of personal knowledge systems
before settling on TW. When you searching for a knowledge base I would
suggest that you:

  * Avoid proprietary solutions that could be
be sold, go out of business, or charge
usurious amounts (this happened to me)
  * Avoid open source solutions that are
poorly supported or supported by one main
owner

These two issues are frequently overlooked, but are more important for
long-term usage than all the fancy gizmos they may offer.

TW out of the box is pretty good for knowledge management, but at the
moment I'm using TW-notes because that was the main contender at the
time that had a tree-like structure available. Virtually all of the
information management systems out there have a double-pane view with
a tree-like structure on the left hand side. The metaphor appears so
often, it must be working pretty well.

Eventually I'll probably migrate to TWT-executive or something
similar:

  http://twt-treeview-executive.tiddlyspot.com/

Along the way you'll probably find that you want some way to access
images easily, browse other files inside of TW ... for these and many
other features take a look at Eric Shulman's amazing site:

  http://tiddlytools.com/

Good luck
Mark

Maybe this is a dumb question as it could be that tiddlywiki has this
inherently avilable already; but is there an optimal setup or group of
plug-ins that would get tiddlywiki functioning like a searchable
knowledge base?  I have been looking for a good program for this
purpose for a while and started looking at ALEX pkb from sourceforge
just today (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pkb/).  But I am really
taken by the ease tiddlywiki can be edited and customized (or so I've
read, not so much tried yet).

 Thank you for your help,

In addition to twt-treeview there are also the less glitcy, but no
less attractive, twt-blackicity and twt-blackicity-lite, all by Morris
