Sorry for the late fix, I hope it works well now. All you have to do is 
import this tiddler into your own wikis (click on "Export tiddler" from the 
dropdown menu and drop the file to your wikis) to get the fix included:

You should decrease the story width in $:/ControlPanel -> Appereance -> 
Modular theme -> Component configurations -> Centralise story river which 
is defaults to "1200px", try to set to "900px" for example.

Just an FYI that it is planned to introduce a new alternative flexbox based 
layout for the core after 5.1.23. 
There might be potential there for incorporating or at least learning from  
some aspects of your approach.
