There is basically no one maintaining the 1.1 branch right now. Cendio
sponsored a few hours of my labor to fix some obvious, straightforward
bugs in 1.1 and package up a release, but they are basing their stuff on
trunk, so that's where my priorities lie as well. Even barring
priorities, I wouldn't really have the spare cycles to focus on fixing
bugs to the extent that would be necessary. I felt it was important to
release 1.1.0 so that we had a line in the sand that improved upon 1.1
beta without further destabilizing it. However, it had to be released
with many known issues, including the fact that major functionality is
undocumented.

To be (perhaps too) honest, a big problem with this project is that we
don't have a true project maintainer per se-- that is, someone who can
really focus on quality, stability, usability, and community support. I
try to do a little bit of that as best I can, but my priorities right
now are centered around adding performance-related features to trunk,
both to support Cendio as well as to start bringing in some TurboVNC
users who are interested in leveraging TigerVNC's more modern X server
and universal viewer. I can only hope that, once the flurry of new
development subsides, we'll all be able to focus more on closing some of
those bugs in the tracker.

For context, it took 5 years for TurboVNC to truly come into its own as
an enterprise product, and that was with me spending probably 25-30
hours a week on it, plus others from Sun contributing testing and
architectural assistance. And that was with a code base that was more
or less stable.

Specific to this bug, I do have another client coming on board that may
be sponsoring some work on WinVNC. If that happens, I can look at this
issue under that contract. Barring that, I somewhat doubt that anything
in WinVNC will be fixed anytime soon unless someone submits a patch or
comes forward with money to sponsor the work on it.

[Tigervnc-devel] 1.1 has no --help on ms windows

2011-08-26 Thread Antoine Martin
Hi,

Only just tested 1.1, as reported previously the "winvnc4.exe --help"
still does not show anything in a DOS window, but I do get the help
output when I launch it from my python wrapper!?
Also, the website still points to 1.0.1 as being the current version...

Cheers
Antoine
