Re: [time-nuts] Vintage Quartz Crystal Manufacturing

2016-09-24 Thread Cube Central
I watched this video totally in awe at how much "hands-on" processing was
required. I am not sure what I thought before, but I suppose this level of
work was done for most every technical thing back then. I really got a huge
kick out of seeing every step of the process. I was also in awe of the
machines that were made specifically for the manufacturing process - the
testers, the vacuum chamber, the meters, the cold box! However, I was a bit
concerned at the somewhat relaxed attitude and working conditions, specifically
around the X-RAY devices and found myself hoping that they were well shielded!
I couldn't imagine wearing rings (or nail polish) on my fingers and working
with oil, water, abrasive grit, soap, etching acid, neutralizer, etc. every day
and not wearing gloves - my hands would have been wrecked! I got such a great
sense of not only how these things were made, but also how the working
environment must have been. I couldn't imagine doing any of those tasks for
more t
han a month straight before I would go batty. I have a ton of respect for the
women and men who hand checked every single sliver of quartz and who tested,
retested, etched and re-etched thousands of crystals.

Would you please expand more on what controversy you are referencing? I didn't
really see anything controversial there, except maybe the working
conditions/safety hazards! Maybe I need to watch it again and not be so
engrossed with the technical and working aspects?

Thanks for your thoughts, and thank you to whomever linked it - I really
enjoyed it! Any others I should see?

Hi

It’s interesting how much controversy that film stirred up. Literally 30 years
after it was made, you could get a fairly excited conversation going about it
at the FCS.
On one side were the people who felt it was a sweetheart deal to Reves at a
point that other companies were being prosecuted for “excess profits”. On the
other side were the guys with Reves badges and those who believed it did serve
an honest purpose.

2016-09-24 Thread Mark Sims
I forgot to mention that you can also configure Lady Heather by editing the
heather.cfg file. You can place the command line options that you want to
use, one per line, in this file. The options must start in column 1 and begin
with a '/' or '-', otherwise they will be considered as comments. (command
line options can start with either a '/' or a '-' whichever you prefer)

The order that command line options are processed are:
   1) default values hard coded in the program
   2) the default heather.cfg file
   3) the command line (or icon preferences setting).
   4) from the keyboard once Heather starts using the '/' key.

You can also read in a .cfg file from the "R" keyboard menu or the /h= command
line option. You should not use /h in a .cfg file since config files do not
nest.

Version 4.0 does not work with anything but TSIP (Trimble) type receivers. The
next release (v 4.10?) will work with all sorts of receivers. It will also
compile for Windows, Linux, and now macOS (aka OS/X) (using XQuartz as the X11
server).

If you can compile a Linux C program, macOS (using XCode command line tools),
or Windows (using Visual Studio, including the free version), I can email you
the latest source code to try. Contact me off-list. For Windows, you should
first install the current 4.0 release to get the WIN VFX dll library and
makefile.

Re: [time-nuts] Lucent RFTFm-II-XO- Lady Heather question-having issues

2016-09-24 Thread Ken Winterling
Chris,

Your GPSDO has a Bps, stop bit, and parity setting. That has to match the
COM6 settings. If you know the default, or current, port setting for the
GPSDO then you need to go into Windows Device Manager and set COM6 to use
the same characteristics.

To check/set the COM6 port characteristics in Device Manager do the
following:
1. Right click on the Start or Windows button, usually in the lower left
corner of the screen.
2. In the list of devices find "ports (COM & LPT)" and double click it.
3. Double click the COM6 entry.
4. Click on the "Port Settings" tab and you will see the COM6 parameters.
Set them to match the GPSDO and click "OK".

Try LH again and advise what you see.

2016-09-24 Thread Chris Waldrup
Fantastic thanks for the help guys!!
I now have LH seeing com 6.
Is it possible to check/change the baud rate of LH? When I connect up the
Lucent box it says "No COM6 serial port data seen".
I exited LH and opened Hyper terminal and with 9600 baud and COM6 I am getting
a data stream that stops when I unplug the 422 cable from the Lucent box so it
looks like the GPSDO is talking to the laptop.

I'm hoping it's just LH is set to another speed.

I pressed spacebar for help but didn't see it as an option.

I also appreciate the information about the first LH icon that comes up with
TBolt, Seattle. I was curious how on first opening up the program it was seeing
satellites and plotting signal strength before I had even connected the GPSDO.
Now I know.

Chris,

Right click on the Lady Heather icon (not the KE5FX one). At the bottom of
the list, click on "Properties". You will see a number of tabs. Click on
the "Shortcut" tab. In the "Target" text box you should see
"C:\Heather\heather.exe" if you installed LH on the C: drive. If that is
the case just add " /6" for COM6, that is a space folowed by /6, to the end
of the line. It should oook ike this: C:\Heather\heather.exe /6. Click
'OK". Now when you click on the LH icon it will use COM6.

I have assumed that your GPSDO and the COM port have the same baud, stop
bits(s), and parity.

In Windows, the icon on the desktop has a set of properties. One of those is
the command that clicking the

Hi,

I downloaded the latest version 4.00 beta of lady Heather on my win XP laptop.
Installation creates two icons on my desktop. One says KE5FX TBolt (Seattle
USA) and has the lady Heather icon and the other has the icon and simply says
Lady Heather.
When I try and open the Lady Heather icon (not TBolt one) an error box pops up
and says Can't open com port:\\.\COM1 and will not open the software. Opening
the TBolt version icon instead will open the program.

What did I do wrong?
Also the RS422 adapter shows up as com6 and I see in the instructions to change
a command line to /6 for com6 but I am not sure where to find the command line.

Thank you.
