[time-nuts] HP 53132A ROM issue
I recently acquired an older HP 53132A frequency counter offeBay. It did not come equipped with an option oscillator. The standaloneperformance of the existing oscillator is extraordinarily poor although thecounter works well running off my house standard. I decided to update theversion 3703 memory to version 4613 which I have installed on my newer Agilent 53132A.The serial number prefix for the eBay counter is 3736A so I assumed that theupgrade would work based on the HP assembly – level service guide that I have. When I installed a freshlyprogrammed set of 4 ROM’s the counter would not power up. The fan ran butnothing else. When I re-installed the 3703 chips everything returned to normal. Is there a hardware difference between the older and the newer HP/Agilent boards or am I missing something else? ___ time-nuts mailing list -- time-nuts@febo.com To unsubscribe, go to https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts and follow the instructions there.
[time-nuts] Efratom MFS-209 conversion information.
I just received an Efratom MFS-209 GPSDO that I purchased onEbay. Everything appears to work. The only manual that I found online is forthe MGPS controller. The MFS family apparently came in many different flavors allowing the customer to mix andmatch the components that best suited their needs. The version that I have has5 MBF frequency distribution modules that take 5 MHz in and distribute 5 MHzout to the 4 BNC connectors on the module back. These are different than themodules Chuck Harris described in his excellent January 2015 posting which took10 MHz in and distributed 5 MHz out. Does anyone have conversion informationfor converting this MFS-209 from 5 MHz output to 10 MHz output? A source foradditional manuals would also be helpful. I have also experienced the frustration of trying to download IEEE papers. I am a member of IEEE along with two of their affiliated societies and still get the same run-around. There are two techniques that I have found helpful. 1) Try searching for the paper, by name, and you can frequently find it on another site. 2) Develop a relationship with a librarian at a local College or University. I frequently find that they have access to these databases and can download and forward them to me by email. (Tom Van Baak) To: Discussion of precise time and frequency measurement Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Hi Colin: That's one sweet meter. Years ago at work I used them and we had both flavors. One used the old definition of the volt and the other used the new volt. Although our cal lab was not good enough to calibrate them we could feed them signals and measure their readings. They differed by the difference in the definition. Quite amazing. They also can be used as a kind of sampling scope. As I remember it the data is arranged in a strange way. There might be a driver available from Agilent to do the scope thing. Have Fun, Brooke Clarke http://www.PRC68.com http://www.pacificsites.com/~brooke/PRC68COM.shtml http://www.precisionclock.com I can do my own calibration on this instrument. It only requires two artifacts. A 10K ohm standard and a 10 volt DC standard. I have a pair of Fluke SR104 10K resistors that I have calibrated against a local QHE standard and a Datron 4910 quad 10 volt DC standard that is calibrated against a Josephson junction array. The main reason I love this instrument is the ease of calibration. Using the 3458A, I can accurately transfer most AC, DC and resistance values to any other instrument. I think all of the software is still available as the unit is still in production. I got this unit from GL as part of an aircraft test set. I don't think the other bidders knew what was in it's travel case. Colin __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [time-nuts] GPS: ADEV or MDEV? (Tom Van Baak)
My 3458A can make measurements down to the 10nV level. At 7 1/2 digits it can do 60 readings a second. At 8 1/2 digits it slows down to 6 readings a second. The real question is the frequency of the noise. I have yet to interface it to HP-IB bus. I have several Z3801's I could try it on. Colin Good. Thanks for the cool plots. OK, my eyeball sees: 5 uV peak-peak, maybe 2 uV rms. 10 uV peak-peak, maybe 4 uV rms. < 1 uV peak-peak, about 0.2 uV rms 4 uV peak-peak, guess 1 uV rms 3.5 uV peak-peak, < 1 uV rms 10 uV peak-peak, 1 uV rms 3 uVpp per spec This suggests that one could get Vref noise down to about 1 uV (or better if you measure rms). Does anyone on the list have actual experience with this issue? Anyway, assume a full 1 uV of noise and assume a 10811A with an EFC sensitivity of 1e-6/volt. Then Vref noise translates to 1e-12 in frequency -- which is worth considering since it's in the same ballpark as good OCXO noise. Maybe not the dominant factor, but a potential contributing factor. For example, below is a 10-minute frequency plot of a typical hp 10811A which has a low ADEV of about 2e-12 (tau 1 to 10 seconds). The scale is 1e-11 / division. http://www.leapsecond.com/museum/hp10811/log14669v.gif So you can imagine that Vref noise on the order of 1e-12 might just start being noticeable in the plot, meaning that if you want short-term performance down in the low 12's and if you have an OCXO that even gets that low, then you want to keep your Vref (and DAC, filters, etc.) clean to microvolt levels. It's just a back of the envelop calculation so I'm not really sure. Someone correct me if you see something wrong. Related - does anyone have equipment in your home/lab that can directly measure, at uV or sub-uV levels, noise on the EFC line? I wonder how clean a Z3801A EFC is, for example. Also an idea - is there an easy way to artificially increase Vref noise, by say 10x, so one could see if that change made any measurable change in OCXO output ADEV or phase noise? /tvb __ Do You Yahoo!? The power supply for the Thunderbolt should not be a showstopper. The manual spec states that the board needs +12vdc @ 750ma max and -12vdc @ 10ma with ripple at 75mV P-P. The rest of the board needs +5vdc @ 400ma with ripple a spec of 50mV P-P, which is a mid quality power supply. Lab supplies are usually < 5mV P-P, with cheap switchers above 100mV P-P. The reason that most telco units have DC converters is the use of 48vdc power common in that industry. Colin It's here! Your new message! Get new email alerts with the free Yahoo! [time-nuts] HP 5334 oscillator performance
I recently took one of my 5334A’s off of the house standard to lend to a friend. I thought it a good idea to check the onboard oscillator before lending it out. Both of my 5334A’s lack Opt 10 oscillators. This particular unit was almost 40Hz high in frequency. I tried to set it to frequency and had trouble getting it closer than 2Hz. The set-ability was very poor. I checked the service manual and found that HP only specified a final frequency within 8Hz. I can now see why. I then turned the instrument off for 12 hours. The next day I powered the unit back up. The oscillator was 20Hz higher than where I had measured it at shutdown the night before. It took well over an hour for it to re-stabilize and overshot the previous set point by 2Hz. At this point I decided to lend a Heathkit IM-2420 to the friend and continued experiments with the 5334A. I now took the second 5334A down and ran the same tests on it. This instrument was somewhat better but still shared many of the problems the first unit. 1) 60+ minutes to stabilize after power-up. Oscillators would start out 9 – 19Hz high and settle in at +- 1Hz. 2) Poor retrace at turn on. Final settling frequency can vary by 1Hz. 3) Poor set-ability due to the ceramic trimmer. 4) Oscillator pulling of 2 – 3Hz when I connected another counter to the rear panel oscillator jack. The oscillator buffer is on the same ECL chip as the oscillator. After looking at the circuit I decided that a new TCXO would be a better solution than trying to modify the existing circuit for better performance. Since these units are used at room temp most of the time, I need not worry about a wide temp range specification. I set the following goals for the replacement oscillator. 1) Improvement of stability by an order of magnitude and set-ability of two orders of magnitude. 2) Replacement to be built on a circuit board that would mount in the oven oscillator connector on the main circuit board. 3) Use of the full time 24vdc at this connector to power the oscillator at all times. Use of an on-card battery supply for oscillator backup. 4) Cheap 5) Use of readily available TCXO oscillator module. After checking Mouser and Digi-Key I settled on a Mouser supplied FOX801BE 10mHz unit @ $13.46. to start my experiments. This oscillator draws only 2ma. and frequency is set by an external trim pot. I would be interested in the experiences of others with respect to the performance of their non-oven 5334’s (or 5328’s) and ideas that support the design goals. Thanks Colin Do you Yahoo!? [time-nuts] FMT
I did not hear a peep out of the 40 meter Bay Area station in Boulder, Colorado. It may have been the result of the time of day. I did receive the 80 meter and 40 meter ARRL signals from the East Coast. No luck at all on 160 meters. Colin Sponsored Link Compare mortgage rates for today. Get up to 5 free quotes. [time-nuts] FMT
I received the following email from the station manager of W1AW. Hi Colin, I didn't want to answer your question too soon. On the days prior to the FMT, I conduct measurements at 1 hour, 3 and 6 hours after initial warm-up. (And of course, this time frame includes the normal broadcast schedule.) >From what I can see, the drift on the Orion and Pro IIs is minimal. For >example, from the 3 to 6 hour time period (today), the "40-meter" Orion >drifted 0.12 Hz. The "80-meter" Pro II drifted about 0.11 Hz and the >"160-meter" Pro II drifted about 0.04 Hz. (You have to understand that these >three radios are here for evaluation only, and went through their respective >Service Departments before we received them.) And just now, I conducted a quick test to see what the "real short-term" drift would be (given the time frame of the FMT). I didn't notice any significant difference. I'm a little surprised at these numbers. But I have to go on what my counter is telling me. Oddly enough, when we used to run the Harris exciters (during past FMTs), it was not uncommon for me to see at least a 2-4 Hz difference in the 3 to 6 hour time period. So we'll see... Good luck! 73, Joseph Carcia, NJ1Q W1AW Station Manager Interesting...I would not have thought these transceivers were that stable. [time-nuts] Austron 6016
Brian: I would suggest that you contact Carla at yourmanualsource.com. She has a copy of the manual for the Austron 6016 that she will rent to you for $25 per week. A quick trip to Kinko’s and you should be able to copy the whole thing for about another $10. [time-nuts] FMT
I just finished several email exchanges with Joe Carcia, station manager for W1AW, about the operation of the station. I had hoped that the regular daily bulletins broadcast by W1AW would be tightly controlled in frequency, which would allow me to get some practice measuring them. He informed me that they use two IC-756Pro II’s and one Orion I for the transmissions. These radios do not permit the use of external standards for frequency control. Neither do the Harris 3200’s. All of these radios use TCXO’s for frequency control. This setup will be the same used for the FMT on the 15th. They will monitor frequency with a counter hooked to their Z3801. It’s hard to believe, with a 100-watt amplifier in the same case, that these radios don’t drift several cycles during a long transmission. For that reason I would encourage persons making measurements to do so during the specified time for each frequency in question. I think it would be very hard to measure the frequency to 1 cycle or less with the frequency control they use. The West Coast station that will broadcast a 40-meter test signal which will, most likely, be more accurate. That station will be using a Heathkit DX-60 into a 400-watt amp. Frequency control is from a HP-107BR into a HP-5100 synthesizer. While old, this equipment will probably be up to the job. The oscillator is set against GPS and the whole setup will be independently monitored by another station a mile away with a Cesium standard. [time-nuts] HP-8642A
Doug you might check http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/08642-90224.pdf for a copy of the operating and calibration manual for the 8642A. There are probably some other sources of free manuals on the internet. I have had problems with the various Agilent servers of late, so be patient if you can’t get in to their sites. Another source for a manual on your instrument is www.yourmanualsource.com near Baltimore. They charge $25.00 per week but have been a good source for me in the past. When I rent from them I scan the whole manual. Good luck. Colin ___ time-nuts mailing list time-nuts@febo.com https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts

I will also try my hand at this November’s FMT. My first attempt at the FMT was back in the early 60’s from my home in Rochester, NY. I used a home brew counter that used a dozen 12AU7’s with NE2 readouts. It used a start gate that had to be manually started. At the end of the count I would add up the binary count displayed on the neon bulbs. The off air signal was beat against a 1kHz marker divided down from a 100kHz crystal oscillator. The whole setup barely worked. The biggest problem was the amount of noise on the audio signal from the receiver. The counter could not handle it. In getting ready for this years FMT I rediscovered some of the lessons learned back in my youth. I loosely coupled a Fluke 6080AN into my Icom R70 receiver to beat against the unknown signal. I then tried to measure the resultant audio note with my HP 5370B. The same old problem. Too much noise. My next effort involved taking the audio output of the receiver to a scope that was triggered by the output of an HP 3325A function generator. This worked much better. By adjusting the frequency of the 3325A, I could stop the motion of the signal and read the offset from the function generator. Still not great, but it works. For this years attempt I will try John’s method. I loaded an old computer with a downloaded version of Linux. I have also downloaded a copy of Baudline audio analyzer. This looks to be a great program for this type of work. Once I have this combination working, I will calibrate Baudline with the 3325A. My time base collection consists of a pair of 5061A’s, several rubidium oscillators and three HP Z3801’s. I keep an eye on their performance with a NIST frequency measurement system that uses GPS as a reference. My home is located in Boulder, Colorado. Recent measurements of W1AW showed that their signals are weak at 1700 miles. The Bay area on the west coast is about 1100 miles. Boulder is not ideally situated for either location. Good for WWV or WWVB however! The FMT should be fun. Colin Bradley WA2YUN ___ time-nuts mailing list time-nuts@febo.com https://www.febo.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/time-nuts
