It is easy to convert these to take DC on port 1, if you are
comfortable with SMT soldering. I don't recall the exact
details, but I found it fairly obvious.

Did you have to remove the circuit board from the
metal housing to make the mod? If so, that
would make it much more difficult.

No, you just take the top off, and then add/remove/replace a
component or two.

2006-08-15 Thread Jack Hudler
Here's an eBay search I built from Toms list.
(58512A,58516A,58517A,58535A,58536A,58504A,58532A) (HP, AGILENT,
HP/AGILENT, HEWLETT PACKARD, Symmetricom)

I researched that 58535A Glenn mentioned; they've been trying to sell it since
May with no takers.

I was thinking of putting up a FOL-100 fiber optic antenna link, with fiber and
connector.

Magnus,

Over the years I've picked up all mine on eBay; good
ones by HP/Agilent, or Symmetricom. Ignore the high
fixed-priced sellers; if you're patient you can get them
for as little as $10 to $20 per port. Many of these are
still new (telecom surplus). Search by P/N:

58512A (2-port)
58516A (4-port)
58517A (8-port)

58535A (2-port)
58536A (4-port)

58504A antenna (puck)
58532A antenna (cone)

I picked up an HP 58516A (four-port) on ebay last year, very cheaply. I
didn't need four ports, but the price was right.

Magnus, you probably already know this, but just in case you don't, I'll
mention it. Those HP splitters come in two varieties. On one, the 5VDC is
fed into port 1. On the other variety, the 5VDC goes to a separate SMC
connector. Mine came with the SMC connector (of course) and I had trouble
finding the mating connector.

Actually, it might be if you're not too concerned about phase noise. I've
used video distribution DAs in the past with good results, but they're
limited to locking purposes only.

Pass the DC from one port and block it from all others.

A 50nF Cap should do just fine.
Little smaller/bigger probably ok as well.

Size? A small ceramic should be fine.
After all we are not expecting KW.

Hmmm... I wonder what the power output of a GPS sat is?
Is that classified? Even if it is, if I know it's height
I can probably figure it out. Estimate at least.

Sorry, just thinking out loud.
