The kind of DC-DC converter I'm talking about is often called a brick. That's
a standard size, roughly 2x2x1/2 inches. The older ones were a block of
epoxy. Similar units were available in half brick and quarter brick sizes.

If you can see inside or get the cover off, you may find one. If so, it may
have enough info printed on the package to answer your question and/or a
manufacturer and part number so you can look it up on the web.

There is a picture of the power board from a Z380A about 1/3 of the way down
this page:
  http://www.realhamradio.com/GPS_Frequency_Standard.htm
The 2 big rectangles are DC-DC converters. The one on the left doesn't have
any useful info, but the Datel module has a part number that you could
probably look up.

(The Z3801A does have a sticker on the back. It's visible in the picture
above the power board, but the resolution isn't good enough unless you know
what you are looking for.)

[time-nuts] LMU300 Connectors

2019-03-15 Thread Mark Sims
The standard config for telecom equipment that runs on +24V or -48V is that
they have an isolated input DC-DC converter in them. The input voltage goes
through a full bridge rectifier that makes them insensitive to input voltage
polarity. On the ones that I have played with they worked fine at 24V to..
48V... YMMV...

[time-nuts] LMU300 Connectors

2019-03-15 Thread gandalfg8--- via time-nuts
The power supply is auto sensing and spec'd at +24V or -48V, which implies the
polarity would be the same in either case, but the auto sensing doesn't seem to
imply sensing right across that range.
24 V range is 22 to 28 V at 6A, -48V range is -40.5 to -57V at 3A, I don't
recall checking what might happen at say 35 V, for example, I'd probably called
it quits long before getting into that sort of detail:-)

Anyone looking to play with these might want to check the archives for the post
from Paul (K9MR) on 6th May 2017.

The outside of the box specs current need at 24vdc and 48vdc. Does the
Power Supply recognize the voltage level or do I need to dig into it further ?

Don't worry, the sticker says : 24V 6A or 48V 3A.
It means it's a switched mode power supply.

I would have expected a sticker somewhere, but nothing found.
I'll hit it with 28vdc and see if any "Magic Smoke" issues forth.

There is a large collection of DC-DC converters available. A 2:1 range on
the input voltage is common, but they usually are centered on 24V or 48V
rather than spanning 24-48V.

I'd expect a sticker next to the power input connector telling you which
voltage it expects.

Thank you for your kind explanation.I was just intrigued by those connectors
that I didn't know.
It's also possible to rescue 6 VCOs from micro circuits and perhaps
others components hidden behind their shield.

They're QMA connectors, a Google search will find them, but not sure if that
will help very much.
Your mileage may vary but I quickly decided that whilst buying the complete
unit was an excellent way to purchase the GPSDO in new condition, at the
price they were selling for then anyway, there was very little I could do
with the complete unit.

Aside from the GPSDO the only really useful parts seem to be the fans, some
of the leads, and perhaps the PSU module and/or the case:-) Nigel, GM8PZR

Hi Everyone,
Could someone help me identify connectors used on LMU300 from TruePosition?
