RE: [tips] Positive dyslexia

2013-11-06 Thread rfro...@jbu.edu
As demonstrated in the past on TIPS, one doesn’t have to go looking for a vast
right-wing, corporatist conspiracy to think critically about Gladwell’s work.
But the SHAME Project homepage is an interesting read. It turns out that
Arianna Huffington and NPR are also in the pockets of the far right-wing
corporatists.

The SHAME (Shame the Hacks who Abuse Media Ethics) project is a division of
NSFWCORPhttps://www.nsfwcorp.com/archives/, probably a play on Rupert
Murdoch’s Newscorp. Digitally thumbing through a few issues provides some
helpful context on their reporting. If you thought Cory Booker was just the
former mayor of Newark, NJ who became a senator from New Jersey, you will be
interested to find out that, “His political career was launched with the help
of the Chabad-Lubavitchers, a rabidly rightwing Hasidic cult that considers its
dead Rebbe a messiah and that pushes a regressive right-wing worldview that
would horrify Booker’s prog supporters: deep- rooted racism, violent
Islamophobia, medieval positions on everything from abortion to homosexuality
and women’s rights, and a nasty tendency to normalize sexual abuse and protect
serial sexual predators in its ranks.”

If nothing else, the site will put the lie to the contention that right-wingers
have a monopoly on conspiracy theories*. I’m not sure this site can be easily
placed on the usual left-right continuum. It seems to reflect the worldview of
Yasha Levine (its founder, who has somehow escaped even having a Wikipedia
profile but he is mentioned in a number of Wikipedia articles) but you can say
for sure it is not right of center on that scale.

Motivated Rejection of Science. Psychological Science, 24, 622-633.

This might give you a somewhat different view of the seemingly affable Malcolm
Gladwell. As Canadians go, he has more in common with, say, David Frum and
Conrad Black than you might otherwise think.
