I note that Stephen fails to mention that Britain won its first Winter

And I also note that Stephen's nationalistic boasting directed
attention away from the far more important item he cited:

A university professor who resigned in protest at the dumbing down of
degrees was treated unfairly when exam students he failed were remarked
to pass, the Court of Appeal has ruled.

I see that getting the smiley wrong (twice) in my last message rather
spoils the effect of using them. :-)

I have always thought that medal counts should be divided by population (Norway
has about 4.5 million people). Here are some interesting analyses of medal
count by GNP.

Actually, and even better, he wins one for the integrity of the
university educational system (in Britain, at least). Professor
Buckland defended the novel idea that students did not
deserve to pass if they had not worked hard enough or simply
did not have the necessary ability to succeed.

Well done, Professor Buckland!

And while we're on the subject of winning, allow me to slip in this
modest observation on the recently-concluded Winter Olympics.
Canada, with one-tenth the population of the USA and one-
quarter the population of Russia, managed to win more gold
medals that both of those powerful countries combined. Canada
also won more gold medals than any other country in Winter
Olympic history.

It is not in the nature of Canadians to kvell, despite the
aberration of that embarrassing and cringe-inducing Own the
podium campaign, but I imagine we can be forgiven just this
one time. We're sorry. We'll try not to mention it again.
