Compression should not be chunked if content's size is known

Summary: Compression should not be chunked if content's size is
known
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.0.18
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
  Severity: Enhancement
  Priority: Other
 Component: Connector:Coyote
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Currently if compression is on and a Servlet generates a page with
content-length set, the output will be sent using chunked-encoding. IMO it would
be better if in that case the content should be gzipped as a whole and then sent
with the new content-length set and without chunking.

respuestas sobre el Chat

2004-05-27 Thread ayudachat

www.paysandu.com/chat

OTRAS RAZONES POSIBLES

*

LIMPIAR CACHE EN INTERNET EXPLORER, instrucciones:

LIMPIAR CACHE EN NETSCAPE, instrucciones:

context.xml in war appears to require a docBase

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2004-05-27 09:39 ---
I may have a different motivation than David, but I too think that docBase
should not be required in some situations. Consider the following scenario:

1. I deploy the war file (or expanded war structure) locally, it's already
present on the machine where I run Tomcat.
2. The war file is not under webapps; it resides outside the server installation
3. I have put context.xml into the archive's META-INF directory, as recommended
by http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/appdev/deployment.html

In this case, I will supply the location of the war file when deploying using
manager, and I expect the server will use the 'path' attribute for the context
path. However, it shouldn't require the 'docBase' attribute, as that's already
determined by the war location. After all, Jan Luehe says in his evaluation of
28272 that sometimes docBase is ignored:

'path' attribute inside META-INF/context.xml is used, whereas 'docBase'
attribute is ignored (it is implicitly set to the WAR file location).

Currently, omitting 'docBase' in my scenario will not work, because the server
will not find the deployed application after restart.

I suggest this could be fixed as follows: When manager deploys the application,
then besides copying context.xml into $CATALINA_BASE/conf/Catalina/localhost, it
also maintains information about the 'docBase' of deployed applications for apps
that do not specify docBase in context.xml. (This could be done by maintaining a
properties file that maps file names of context.xml files in
$CATALINA_BASE/conf/Catalina/localhost to real docBase locations of the
applications.)

Seems like a Very Bad Idea, because you wouldn't be able to stream the response

Jan, Thanks for staying on this - sorry, can't just give out the full war.
my javac was installed the same day this February as
java -version
java version 1.4.2_04
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_04-b05, mixed mode)

I had the struts.jar (1.1) twice in the classpath, but fixing this didn't solve
the problem.

Tomcat 5.0.25 does not honor error-page directive?

2004-05-27 Thread Detlef Pleiß
In a freshly unzipped jakarta-tomcat-5.0.25 installation I added

error-page
error-code404/error-code
location/404.html/location
/error-page

(copied from servlet-2_4-fr-spec.pdf page 153)

Just before the closing /web-app in webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/web.xml

I then copied a simple 404.html file to webapps/ROOT.

However, when requesting some non existing page like
http://127.0.0.1:8080/blub.jsp
I get the standard browser 404 error page (in my case MSIE) not my 404.html.

Is this a bug?

Ciao - thanks - Det.

Hi,
This is a tomcat-user, not tomcat-dev question.

Make sure your Show Friendly Error Pages option in IE (Advanced Options page) is
disabled. This works for me in 5.0.25 (and it's part of our automated test scripts
before a release, which pass needless to say).

I added the error-page tag to the end of the original
webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/web.xml (before /web-app).
That even does match the order in the Deployment Descriptor Version 2.3.

Betreff: AW: sorry, it's a browser problem - Tomcat 5.0.25 does not honor
error-page directive?

yes, thanks, it *is* a browser problem:
It does work on Mac/Safari and it does work even in MSIE if I uncheck the
friendly error messages.
It just doesn't work with those friendly messages enabled in MSIE.

Ciao - thanks - Det.

Betreff: Re: Tomcat 5.0.25 does not honor error-page directive?

I then copied a simple 404.html file to webapps/ROOT.
However, when requesting some non existing page like
http://127.0.0.1:8080/blub.jsp I get the standard browser 404 error
page (in my case MSIE) not my 404.html.

Is this a bug?

1) (Trivial - sorry) have you the page 404.html with correct permissions?
2) Have you tried with other browsers? M$Exploder have bug (you may call it
feature) so when your page is shorter than 512 bytes or so, it will display
standard error page. You can also try check if you have display friendly
error messages internet option disabled.

best regards,
Michal Kostrzewa

Hi,
Any comments on http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28631
before I commit these patches? I don't use the JAASRealm myself but if
anyone else does and doesn't like these enhancements, speak up.

I'm glad I could help. Could you please post our conversation to the mailing

mail server is misconfigured and can't send emails to mailing lists)

Also please note, if you make you error page longer (about 1 kilobyte will

loggers shift files but don't roll (not deleting oldest files by prescribes file count)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 Status|RESOLVED|REOPENED
 Resolution|WONTFIX |
Summary|provide new Log4J/java2-|loggers shift files but
   |logging-api proxy loggers |don't roll (not deleting
   |class |oldest files by prescribes
   ||file count)

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2004-05-27 14:48 ---
System integrators consider this RFE seriously.

Please take your time to fully understand the consequence and do not discard the
idea because the singular piece of code you seam to focus on will not be
updated. You are free to carry this RFE to the most up to date logging framework
catalina intent to use, but in the mean time, tomcat 5.0.24 user do not have
access to those updates.

You effectively said to every tomcat users, that they must start writing
scripts, or task, or cron jobs, or logrotate setup, or background thread in a
monitoring servlet, that will monitor a file system for logs and delete older
ones manually. This is a waste of energy, as the logger itself can do a simple
check, as it is already aware of every log details.

Rolling implies the concept of circular buffer and means that the size of the
storage is finite.

You can't affrim your logs rotate unless you guaranty the log storage won't
exceed a prescribes size, time or filecount.

You logger barely shifts files, which is just a convenient implementation
choice, but doesn't fulfill the rolling requirements.

The lack of this feature makes it difficult for system integrators to deploy
apps without having to worry about badly behaving loggers that effectively leaks
on hard disk.

Thanks for reconsidering this request.

Note: I don't get that Remy thing you are refering to, but remember that
everyone hears a voice when they read, and that voice is reflecting the mood and
attitude of the reader. I don't know how my texts were interpreted, but I mostly
push non-objectively when thing really don't make sense. That should ring a
bell to you guys, that there is something serious going on, and not just a
stupid guys personnal favor. I don't have time to waste on simple things. So if
you feel I'm harsh, I feel you are not very understanding at the same time, so
why don't we read each other in a perfectly objective way, sifting only the core
message.

Thanks.

confusing error message upon non-existing page encoding

Summary: confusing error message upon non-existing page encoding
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.0.24
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows NT/2K
Status: NEW
  Severity: Normal
  Priority: Other
 Component: Jasper
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When trying to run following page, Tomcat returns nothing (Content-Length is 0)
and prints May 27, 2004 5:13:25 PM org.apache.jasper.runtime.PageContextImpl
release
WARNING: Internal error flushing the buffer in release() to the console.

--- example page end ---

The problem is, of course, that the encoding ISO-8858-1 doesn't exist. The
behavious of Tomcat makes is very difficult to find this error, a better error
report would help.

RE: Source for Tomcat.exe

2004-05-27 Thread George Sexton
Thanks.

Someone might annotate the README.TXT in
jakarta-tomcat-5.0.25-src\jakarta-tomcat-connectors\procrun to point
there.

Also, can anyone explain why this file set is tacked into the Connectors
directory?

ClassDefNotFound Problem

2004-05-27 Thread Worley Brent - bworle
Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to Java and Tomcat. I hope this problem can be easily
explained.

I am using Tomcat 5.0.24.

I have an application, packaged it in a WAR file, and deployed it. This
application has a login page. After logging in, the application redirects
to a page named search.jsp. This page loads a package (import search.*).
Package search includes several classes. The two in question are
Search.class and SearchSession.class. SearchSession is started as a bean
and it has an instance of the Search class in it. However, when search.jsp
loads (and loads SearchSession) I get a java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError.
When I view the source, it is where SearchSession creates an instance of the
Search class.

I have verified that the classes are under WEB-INF/classes/search.

Any ideas of what could be going wrong?

Thanks,
Brent Worley

Admin webapp help for persistence

2004-05-27 Thread Shapira, Yoav

Hi,
I've just added support for specifying thread priority in the coyote
connector (http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28914). I
think I have all the code in place including for viewing and editing
this attribute in the Admin webapp: it looks fine in the GUI. However,
if one modifies the value and commits changes, the old attribute value
is written to server.xml. Amy or someone more knowledgable than myself:
can you please look at the connector threadPriority attribute
persistence code and tell me what I missed? ;) Thanks,

Yoav Shapira

Hi,
I've added a reference to the commons-daemon site to the
procrun/README.TXT file as you requested. As for the tacking, I'm not
sure ;)

Thanks.

Someone might annotate the README.TXT in
jakarta-tomcat-5.0.25-src\jakarta-tomcat-connectors\procrun to point
there.

Also, can anyone explain why this file set is tacked into the

A bug should only get closed when it is fixed or found to be invalid, and at no
other time.

Has the documentation been updated to reflect the correct behaviour? Has someone
actually taken the time to verify this? I see no comment against this bug to
show it's been verified, nor do I see any patches logged against it for a
proposed fix. Looking at the docs again, I see that the problems in the docs
that I posted are still there, so I can only conclude there has been no change.

I (as in [EMAIL PROTECTED]) am reopening this bug until someone can actually
verify that this bug is still present. Unfortunately I do not have the time to
do so now, as my time is focused on getting mod_ldap out of httpd experimental.
Closing bugs arbitrarily that have not yet been fixed or verified (bug denial)
is a waste of everybody's time, please don't do it.

I'm closing this a not a bug, because
- I'm able to precompile the sample webapps that come with struts 1.1.
- I'm able to manually compile the .java files in your attachment.

It seems you are somehow referencing an old servlet-api.jar that contains JSP
1.2 based interfaces in your environment.

respuestas sobre el Chat

2004-05-27 Thread ayudachat

www.paysandu.com/chat

OTRAS RAZONES POSIBLES

*

LIMPIAR CACHE EN INTERNET EXPLORER, instrucciones:

LIMPIAR CACHE EN NETSCAPE, instrucciones:

OK. I've modified the document to address the issues you raised. You can see
it in CVS at http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/jakarta-tomcat-
catalina/webapps/docs/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.xml and it will of course
be part of future tomcat 5 releases. It will be visible on the website with
the next tomcat 5 release.

In addition, I've verified the how-to works exactly as specified when following
the document to the letter, against Oracle and MySQL, on tomcat 5.0.25 (the
latest stable release at the time of this writing). I did this verification
putting the data source declarations both inside a Context and inside the
GlobalNamingResources: both work equally well.

I have not tested admin webapp editing of these data sources. If a bug exists
there, feel free to submit another issue in bugzilla: this issue is for the
documentation flaws.

Finally, if you feel like the documentation is still lacking / misleading /
wrong, I restate my earlier invitation for you to submit the text changes you'd
like to see, and my earlier promise to quickly review and commit them.

This bug is not invalid: it's valid, and it's now fixed.

Hi,
I've just added support for specifying thread priority in the coyote
connector (http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28914). I
think I have all the code in place including for viewing and editing
this attribute in the Admin webapp: it looks fine in the GUI. However,
if one modifies the value and commits changes, the old attribute value
is written to server.xml. Amy or someone more knowledgable than myself:
can you please look at the connector threadPriority attribute
persistence code and tell me what I missed? ;) Thanks,

Yoav Shapira

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2004-05-27 19:51 ---
When I built 5.0.25, these two classes weren't compiled and therefore not
included in the naming-factory.jar. They weren't compiled because I didn't
have javax.mail.Session in my libraries, making catalina/build.xml's
${compile.javamail} condition evaluate to false. It's too bad there's no way
to grab JavaMail off iBiblio or something like that.

Time for 5.0.26?

2004-05-27 Thread Shapira, Yoav

Hi,
We need to do a new release, 5.0.26, because of
http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=29255. Does anyone
have stuff they're working on, and would therefore like me to wait a
couple of days (or more, or less?) before tagging and building? I
probably won't have time to do it before the weekend, and I'm out of
town over the long weekend, so it'll be Tuesday at the earliest anyhow,
unless Remy feels a desire to do it instead and we need to do it before
Tuesday.

dynamic mapping of jsp's from jars

2004-05-27 Thread Ron Forrester

I am thinking this question walks the edge between tomcat-users and
tomcat-dev, so please forgive me if I have chosen unwisely...

Background:

We are wanting to add a capability to our webapp which requires that we
be able to reference precompiled jsp's from multiple jars discovered at
the time the webapp starts. Currently, we precompile all our core jsp's
into a jar, and get that to work by making sure the jar is in the
codebase for tomcat, and including a snippet (generated at build time)
into web.xml that looks like a series of these:

servlet
servlet-namecom.tripwire.jsp.index_jsp/servlet-name

servlet-classcom.tripwire.jsp.index_jsp/servlet-class
/servlet

One per compiled jsp. That is fine for our core jsp's which can be
mapped statically like this. But as I said, now were adding the ability
to add plugins into our webapp, which can contain their own UI elements
in the form of jsp's.

Requirement:

What I need is a way to dynamically add the mappings to tomcat while the
webapp starts. I have poked around in the code and discovered
JspRuntimeContext.addWrapper() which looks like what I'd want to use to
dynamically map the jsp's as our webapp starts up -- assuming I can
discover the mappings, which I will be able to. What I am not clear on
is precisely how to use this functionality, which appears to be somewhat
internal to tomcat, from my webapp -- i.e. would I need to override
JspServlet with my own?

Any ideas, pointers, reprimands, etc?

Thanks,
rjf

Tomcat 5.0.24+ jmx.jar may not be in CLASSPATH

Summary: Tomcat 5.0.24+ jmx.jar may not be in CLASSPATH
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.0.24
  Platform: Sun
OS/Version: Solaris
Status: NEW
  Severity: Minor
  Priority: Other
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When you upgrade an existing Tomcat 5.0.19 server to Tomcat 5.0.24+,
you may have problems getting the server to come up without adding
jmx.jar explicitly to the CLASSPATH. This happens only after a
badly applied upgrade.

The fix to make sure this doesn't happen is to add jmx.jar to the
CLASSPATH after commons-logging-api.jar. Without this fix, you may see
this message in catalina.out:

Bootstrap: Class loader creation threw exception
  java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/management/MBeanServerFactory
  at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.createClassLoader
(Bootstrap.java:165)
  at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.initClassLoaders

  at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:324)
  at org.apache.commons.daemon.support.DaemonLoader.load
(DaemonLoader.java:201)

Since you can fix the configuration problem in the server, adding
jmx.jar explicitly to the CLASSPATH is a minor bug fix, although
it might provide a big hint to people who are upgrading Tomcat
5.0.19 servers.

Typically this error means someone may have moved jmx.jar to its
previous resting place (i.e., $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib) because
they thought that's where it was supposed to go, so you can just
restore a correct copy of jmx.jar to bin to recover from this problem.

This could be avoided by a documentation update instead of a code
change.

After some discussions at the last days to get the jk2.properties mx handler
active for MX4J 2.0.1 working, I have create a patch.

build Tomcat with 2.0.1 or

copy 2.0.1 mx4j.jar at bin/jmx.jar
copy 2.0.1 mx4j-tools.jar at bin/

change your systemclasspath at setclasspath script to
set CLASSPATH=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\tools.jar;%BASEDIR%\bin\mx4j-tools.jar

Add jk2.properties now we can configure the Adaptor classes

mx.enabled=true
mx.httpPort=9050
mx.httpHost=localhost

# set Adaptor classes
mx. mx4jHttpAdaptorClassName=mx4j.tools.adaptor.http.HttpAdaptor
mx.mx4jProcessorClassName=mx4j.tools.adaptor.http.XSLTProcessor
mx.mx4jJRMPAdaptorClassName=mx4j.tools.adaptor.rmi.jrmp.JRMPAdaptor

Also we can configure the HTTPAdpator to the XML Default output with
#mx.mx4jProcessorClassName=mx4j.tools.adaptor.http.DefaultProcessor

with this configuration you can used MX4J 1.1.1
mx. mx4jHttpAdaptorClassName=mx4j.adaptor.http.HttpAdaptor
mx.mx4jProcessorClassName=mx4j.adaptor.http.XSLTProcessor
mx.mx4jJRMPAdaptorClassName=mx4j.adaptor.rmi.jrmp.JRMPAdaptor

Tested only at Windows xp and Tomcat 5.0.25

Installation from the .exe using c:\java test (space in the name) as the java

Installation from the .exe using c:\j2sdk1.4.2, and then using the Configure

works for me.

All these were done on a clean machine (no previous or other tomcat

I added the mkdirs() call as you suggest. There could possibly be a
permissions setup where the server user has permission to write the xml file
but not permission to create directories, but we require the latter implicitly
anyways, so I don't think this is a big deal. Thanks.

The service doesn't go off JAVA_HOME. I suggest you use the supplied tomcat
installation and configuration programs rather than doing a manual or custom
install: that's why we provide them.

FWIW, using the normal windows service installation JSPs work fine for me with
both JDK 1.3 and JDK 1.4, without needing to copy tools.jar to common/lib.
(I've tested 5.0.24 as well to mimic your test case).
