We'd like to add possibility of stepping (in debugger) through tag files, but
realized there's no mapping info in between the tag files and the generated java
code - the only mentioned file in the smap mapping is the jsp itself. I think
the files should be mapped similar to mappings of static/dynamic includes. Or is
another stratum needed here?

You can't file a bug against Tomcat 5.0.30 -- it hasn't been released yet ;)
I'll change that to 5.0.29.

Secondly, when you ask for an enhancement and are unclear or ambiguous yourself
about what should be done, Bugzilla is not the right place. Use the mailing
lists for discussion and ideas. When you have a specific proposal, preferably
with specific .diff patches, only then should you open a Bugzilla item. Thank
you.

I downloaded the file jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28.exe and run it to install tomcat 5.0
I got no error (or any other) messages during the installation. On the last
page of the install-wizard I selected Run Tomcat. I get only the following
error dialog: Application System Error: Unable to open the Service Manager
The same happens if I want to call Configure Tomcat or Monitor Tomcat from
the program menu or if I start tomcat5w.exe in CATALINA_HOME/bin .
I ran the installation as a normal windows-user, and not as the Administrator.
I use java 1.4.
I have 2 other Tomcat versions on this PC (V4.x) both of them working.
Maybe the following error message helps to localise the bug:
If I start the program tomcat5.exe in CATALINA_HOME/bin in a command window I
get the following message:
  C:\Programme\Apache Group\Tomcat 5.0\bintomcat5.exe
  [2004-11-23 15:36:37] [349 prunsrv.c] [error]
Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.
  [2004-11-23 15:36:37] [1037 prunsrv.c] [error]
  Load configuration failed

The first message translated from German: File could not be found

I can only start my Tomcat5 using the startup scripts in CATALINA_HOME/bin :-(

Installation of the 5.0.28 .exe distro on Win2K using JDK 1.4 has worked for me
numerous times without a problem. The only difference I see between us is the
locale (mine is the default en_us). However, this would go as a Commons-Daemon
issue and not a Tomcat issue, so I'm changing the Component accordingly.

[doc] First App - Example App

2004-11-23 Thread Ben Souther
Hello,

The Example App link at the end of the First App tutorial
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.5-doc/appdev/sample is a bit
misleading when viewed off the Apache site from the web.

When you click on it, it displays an Apache directory listing.
From there, you can drill into the src directory to get
the servlet code but when you try to drill into the web directory
the index.html page gets shown and leads the viewer into thinking that
this is a working app. It's not. When you click on the To a servlet
link you see a 404 error and when you click on the To a JSP page link
you see the JSP code (which looks like the output from a JSP page
displayed as text because there are no JSP scriptlet tags in it).

I understand that the intent is for the viewer install TC, follow the
entire tutorial and actually deploy the examples to his/her own machine,
and then run it from there, but a casual surfer (or worse a struggling
newbie) will just see this as a non-working app with broken links.

Has anyone considered building the app, WARing it up, and putting an
index.html page at
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.5-doc/appdev/sample/
with a link to the war file and some basic instructions for either
running or unpacking the file to get to the src that goes with the
tutorial?

If this is a good idea, I'd be willing to build the war files and HTML
pages.
