Re: !!! Virus alerT !!!
I was going to send this yesterday morning but I did not want to make the Cassandra part. So there it goes. I would say this could be the start of a more general list overhaul, like automatic rejection of untrimmed posts. Dear list administrator, As you are aware there is a new virus around and a number of mailserver are run in such a (clueless) way as to bounce virus laden emails to the (forged) sender address. In the last few hours we already had two of these bounces get into the list, but their senders do not look like list subscribers. I though this list would not allow messages posted by non registered users, if this is not the case could we please have list posting reserved to subscribers only to avoid this problem? Thanks GG - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Apache + Tomcat RH Setup
you will see it, after this commandline: rpm -ev apache-1.3.12-25 mod_ssl-2.6.6-25 mod_perl-1.24-4 Also, I need to get an apache rpm uninstalled. rpm -e apache-1.3.12-25 error: removing these packages would break dependencies: apache = 1.3.12-25 is needed by mod_ssl-2.6.6-25 webserver is needed by mod_perl-1.24-4 Are these other packages needed by anything else? --- the solution depends on the 'boot concept' of your Linux-Distribution. if you have 'insserv', their are helpfull tipps in `man insserv`. You will find something about the 'boot concept in `man init.d` I have been reading through John's HOWTO to get these operating together (with the latest release versions, which I do not think will matter for this question...) and noticed that he says to start Tomcat before Apache and wait at least 15 seconds. I have read similar things from time to time, so I am guessing its pretty important. If I wanted to set these up to start on the system boot, via the run levels (/etc/rc.d/rc3.d etc...) how should I setup those links. Such as S84Tomcatd and S85Apached (linked to scripts in /etc/init.d). Would that make sure that tomcat is started before apache? If I wanted to setup the links in /etc/rc.d/rc6.d would apached have to shut down before tomcat? If I wanted to restart tomcat, for any reason during system runtime, would I have to shut down apache, shut down tomcat, start tomcat, start apache? If I wanted to restart apache, what needs to be done? -- Holger de Wall LKV-SH, Steenbeker Weg 151, Kiel 24106 Tel. : +049 431-33987-38 Fax : +049 431-33987-20 - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How to get two version of xalan/xerces together in Tomcat?
Hello. I've to install a web application wich uses a xalan/xerces version different of the installed in Tomcat. I don´t want to replace the libraries in endorsed directories because other applications only can use the installed version of xerces/xalan in Tomcat. Is there any way to do that this application take the new libraries of xalan/xerces from other directories? We've Tomcat 4.1.27 Thanks. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Error configuring JK2
Ralf Schneider wrote: configure: error: Invalid location for apxs: '/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs' Looking at the configure file, it could be that your apxs is not executable (copied by FTP?). If you manage to get over this problem, I had two other ones on Solaris 9. The first seems to be a system-dependant problem (default shell), there are two if ! ${TEST} in configure.in which I replaced by if ${TEST} !. Re: WebappClassLoader not GC'd after webapp reload (Tomcat 4.1.24, 5.0.18)
Tatyana Apine wrote: Hi all, I've got a problem and was wondering if you ever experienced something like this. My webapplication is using Struts(1.1) and Log4J (1.2.7). I run it on tomcat 4.1.24 (I also tried 5.0.18 and got the same behavior). I use OptimizeIt (version 4.2) to see what classes weren't garbage collected after I stop or reload my webapplication. I noticed that org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader is not removed after I stop/reload my webapplication. Every time I restart my application, the new WebappClassLoader is added to the list of WebappClassLoaders instances - and they never get garbage collected. I debugged this class and the class that is referencing this class loader (org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappLoader) and made sure that all references to this class from the WebappLoader are removed. OptimizeIt is showing that incoming refernces after application stop for the WebappClassLoader class are java.security.ProtectionDomain and sun.reflect.DelegatingClassLoader. This information does not help me too much :( I also made sure that all Threads that are started when I start the application are stopped after I stop it (and all Thread instances are GC'd as well). I can reproduce the same problem with struts-blank application from the apache web site (it's inside the struts1.1 zip file - http://mirrors.isc.org/pub/apache/jakarta/struts/binaries/jakarta-struts-1.1.zip ) - if I reload/stop this application the WebappClassLoader that was used by it is not GC'd. I also tried using IBM JDK - and I have the same behavior with it (1.3.1). I have no ideas on what else I can try, except trying another application server - but it will be a huge effort that I would like to avoid. Did you ever have the same thing happening? Do you have any ideas on what else I can try here? I will really appreciate any help on this problem. I answered your bug report. To summarize, I think this cannot be fixed (there are many other situations where the classloader will be leaked, and Tomcat cannot do anything about it, so you cannot rely on having no memory leaks when reloading a webapp in the general case). So well, good luck in the evaluation of other app servers, since it was yet another one of these nice fix this or else emails ;) -- x Rémy Maucherat Developer Consultant JBoss Group (Europe) SàRL x - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

while building apache use ./configure --enable-so option to make apache accept shared libraries.. u can also make change to httpd.conf file(i suppose, not sure) where u have a entry for like Shared library=no..make that to yes..and then make mod_jk.so Pavan Kumar Tata Consultancy Services Mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.tcs.comDISCLAIMER: The information contained in this message is intended only and solely for the addressed individual or entity indicated in this message and for the exclusive use of the said addressed individual or entity indicated in this message (or responsible for delivery of the message to such person) and may contain legally privileged and confidential information belonging to Tata Consultancy Services. request timeout - page cannot be displayed
Hi We have got a page which process a request for a long time (because of algoritm) so we set session-timeout = 1000 in web.xml but if the user request this page, it starts to process and then after a time (~30 min) browser gives page cannot be displayed but the request is still be processed in server so the user cannot see anything. Re: How do I build mod_jk.so
I have a similar problem on Debian 3.0/stable. When i compile it, the .so file is not generated with no errors, the only error i can find is when I try to compile it with apxs manualy. Warning! dlname not found in /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_jk2.la. compile options: ./configure \ --with-java-home=/usr/local/java \ --with-jni \ --with-tomcat41=/usr/local/tomcat \ --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs \ --with-apr-include=/usr/local/apr/include/apr-0 However, if use the same setup on a Debian unstable system, everything compiles fine. I can't copy the binaries to the stable system because it uses a different libc. Does anyone know how i can locate the source of this problem? -- J On Thu, 2004-01-29 at 09:54, OUTTERS Guillaume wrote: Thomas Cherry wrote: I was expecting to have a mod_jk.so file (which made me question why ant was the build tool) but have not found it. Hi, Thanks for all the help. We did loadtesting of our application running on tomcat 4.1.27 with jdk1.4 on solaris, we enabled the GC stack to get details of how GC works, we ran for 1 users with 5 users logging every 30 secs. We set min and max heap size as 512mb The test ran perfectly for first 2 hours and total heap ocupied was only 10448K out of total of 519168K , later as test case progessed for around 10 hours the tomcat stopped responding and it has thrown OutOfMemoryError , but as can be seen from GC output before outofmemory error the total heap occupied was only 30846K, though we have lot of more space on heap still tomcat crashed and give connectiontimeout for remaining pages. When we see the size occupied from top command , when tomcat is started it was 622Mb and at time of crash it was 723MB. Re: verbose gc
Unable to create native thread - I had a quick crack at this one and you can up the amount of Threads available to Tomcat in server.xml. You can also pass in a -Xss parameter to the JVM re the thread stack size - these fixed my identical problem. No worries since. (Tomcat 5.0.1x though). Pete. RE: verbose gc
The heap size has nothing to do with the memory size that is seen by the system. You have to look at least at the total memory. (That is used + free memory) To that you have to add - thread stacks (At least some vm's don't allocate them on the heap) - static memory (Like the jvm itself, static strings, classes, jars, ...) - some os memory that is used by the vm to manage it self - ... Size vs. resident size is the total size vs. the used size as seen by the os. How many threads where active at the time of the error ? The vm may have hit some os limits on the number of active threads (either system wide or per owner) The vm may have run out of non heap memory. Re: How do I build mod_jk.so
sorry the correct place to make the change is in the apache/build/libtool file... u have an entry there # Whether or not to build shared libraries. build_libtool_libs=yes this option is no,though i had build my apache with --enable -so option earlier.. i changed this to yes and then did the ./configure for mod_jk.. it creates the .so then.. hope this helps... while building apache use ./configure --enable-so option to make apache accept shared libraries.. u can also make change to httpd.conf file(i suppose, not sure) where u have a entry for like Shared library=no..make that to yes..and then make mod_jk.so Pavan Kumar Tata Consultancy Services DISCLAIMER: The information contained in this message is intended only and solely for the addressed individual or entity indicated in this message and for the exclusive use of the said addressed individual or entity indicated in this message (or responsible for delivery of the message to such person) and may contain legally privileged and confidential information belonging to Tata Consultancy Services. Action.executed executed several times
Hi! I have a problem concerning the Action.executed method. I found out that it is invoked more than once. This results in several lines of log and I also noticed that during debugging. This problems is mentionened a lot of times in the archives, but I don't find a clear explaination of that. The situation is: I invoked a action from one side. The action is defined as follows: action path=/backoffice/editperson type=org.macoma.action.EditPersonAction forward name=success path=/backoffice/editTeilnehmer.jsp/ forward name=failure path=/backoffice/teilnehmerliste.jsp/ /action Theres no javascript, no form or anything else involved. The browser I use is mozilla 1.0. I have the same behavior also an a different action having a form. Can someone explain that? FW: IIS 6.0 SSL port 443 and Tomcat 5.0 problem.
From: charles doweary [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: IIS 6.0 SSL port 443 and Tomcat 5.0 problem. Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2004 23:08:01 -0500 Software Platform: Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0, SSL, Tomcat 5.0. Please help me resolve this issue: Redirection works for my non-secure websites, but it's not work properly for my secure website. My website at HTTP://dowearysoftware.com processes my jsp pages without any problems. I created a copy of the this website at www.dowearysoftware.com and added SSL with 128 bit encryption in IIS 6.0. HTTP://dowearysoftware.com processes the jsp successfully, but HTTPS://www.dowearysoftware.com hangs when I select one of the links from the index.jsp home page. The index.jsp home page displays successfully, but the browser hangs indifinitely when I select any link on the home page. Please try my secure website to see what I am talking about. I believe the problem has something to do with Tomcat 5.0. My redirection is working properly through port Connector port 8009, and IIS SSL allows me to access https://www.dowearysoftware.com using port 443. I've also updated the JSSE organizational unit, organization, city, state, name, and password using changeit in JRE. Questions: What am I missing in Tomcat set up that would cause my jsp pages not to process? Why would the index.jsp home page display over the secure channel and the subsequent jsp links not display? Do I need to modify my worker2.properties file for SSL? My worker2.properties file** #Look at #http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/jk2/jk2/configwebcom.html #for parameter description [shm:] info=Scoreboard. Why do I care if the lib is static or not? Recompiling Apache sounds like a lot of work just because I want to compile mod_jk, and to be honest, this does not really seam to answer my questions. Hi. I've had differing comments about certain setting for Tomcat in production, namely: server.xml, (under default connector port 8080), how can I guestimate good settings for the maxThreads, min/maxSpareThreads looking at a reasonable size app but thinking about the RAM etc on the box so that the box gives it all but doesn't give too much! and for JVM options, -server -Xss (thread stack size) Any comments would be useful. Re: production settings for Tomcat
Oddly enough, I usually ignore all those settings until I run into a problem. (With the exception of maxThreads since I run apache in from of tomcat.) Since 1.4 - I think the -server option has been ok to use. (YMMV) As for memory settings - you should at least pick a default -Xmx(...) so you have a base to start from when doing your tweaks than guessing what the defaults are. My opinion on options are that each option was added because someone had a problem. Ignore them until you have that problem. (Benchmarking notes those problems quickly instead of a 'wait and see' approach when the box is sitting in production) -Tim Pete Stokes wrote: Hi. Diferent redirections with the same application
Hello, I need to configure tomcat to work with the same application but with diferents folders. I try to explain: I have a application with the name charly. the files are in jakarta-tomcat-3.2.1/webapps/charly when i introduce the name of mi site (now i only work trough IP) then i see my application web (www.charly.info/charly/jsp/home.jsp) i want that when i introduce other domain (who is pointing to the same IP) i could acces to www.charly.info/eloan/jsp/home2.jsp I'm working only with tomcat 3.2.1 trough port 80. Before i worked with IIS and tomcat and i knew how to do because i can create a virtual site pointing to the new file and in the host header of the virtual site i introduced the name of domain, but with tomcat i don´t know how. i'm working with Windows 2003 Server Sorry for my poor english. thanks Sergio Carbajal

Loading MBeans
Hi With JkMX it is possible to register an HttpAdaptor and JRMPAdaptor from MX4J. We want to register our own JMXConnector MBean when tomcat is started. Is there a smart way how to do this? We are looking for a general hook where we could register default MBeans on Tomcat startup. Moreover how can WebApplications register their own MBeans in Tomcat. How can they get a reference to Tomcat's MBean server instance? Any comments would be useful. Re: request timeout - page cannot be displayed
I may have a similar problem. See my message from yesterday: connectionTimeout and disableUploadTimeout Assuming you've got something like this in web.xml: session-config session-timeout360/session-timeout /session-config that should take care of your session (the above allows for a 6 hour session). However, there appears to be a separate 'connection timeout' or 'request timeout' concept which will prevent a long request's results from ever displaying. 60 minutes seems to be the limit, but I haven't pinned this down. I've tried using 'connectionTimeout' and 'disableUploadTimeout' but neither seems to have any effect. Sorry to answer your question with a question, but maybe we can pursue this together. -Rob --- Altug B. My system came with apache installed, so I don't think I have an apache directory, but I do have /etc/httpd/lib which points to /usr/lib. This directory does not have the files you indicated. Reading text file in classpath and web app
Hi, I have an Axis web application, which calls a 3rd party API. This API opens up a text file, emapi.cfg, which needs to be a) on the CLASSPATH and b) readable. I know web apps aren't supposed to open IO files, but this is unfortunately something I can't do anything about, as Iona Orbix/CORBA insists on this config file. I eventually got it working with the Tomcat shipped with the JWSDP1-3, after putting the text file in the bin\ directory, but this does not work for Tomcat 5. I have changed Tomcat's setclasspath.bat to include the path to this file, but it keeps on exiting with a java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException. Tomcat 5 ALWAYS gives this stupid exception. The older version of Tomcat with JWSDP1-3 at least gave the exception description. I have no idea where to start looking - I have: 1) Changed the .policy file 2) Copied emapi.cfg *everywere*, bin\, WEB-INF, classes, common, shared, lib, endorsed and nothing works Any ideas? Re: Client Authentication
Michael, with SSL the browser and tomcat will handle the certs for you without having to parse them. You just have to make a cert for your tomcat and tell tomcat where it is, in the config for the connector. It's all well documented on the tomcat site. Otherwise the only thing you need to do is set up security-constraints in your web.xml for the appropriate pages. That is documented well in the servlet spec. HOST - DNS setup
Hi all, Our company has just started into Java based web applications. Our current methodology for deploying to production is to setup a DNS like say firstapp.mycompany.com and define a Host entry in the server.xml with aliases to respond to the new DNS. We do this purely for the capability of typing http://firstapp.mycompany.com in a web browser and getting to the application. But this is kind of cumbersome and time consuming setup when ever we deploy to production. As we have more applications this way we will end up with several Host's which does not seem like a good thing. Is there a better way to do this? Please help.
