GD Lib for TC or Java ?

I seek something like the gdlib , in best case the gdlib :) , for java.
Has anyone an idea whats best for tc/java ?

It should scale images and create images, should handle texts. It does not
need

Thx

 In that case - You can use awt to an offscreen buffer and just
 use all the
 awt methods. Then conver the buffer to an image. There are plenty google

GNUPG TC , could be OT!

2003-03-10 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

Hi,

we have the following constellation:

A webapp uses a java class to send emails , this class uses
another class to SIGN this email via GNUPG.

The host was up for app. 200 days without rebooting and
everything worked fine until last friday ( An idiot @ our
computer centre switched the machine off :-) ).

After rebooting TC did come up as expected but gnupg did
not find his config files like the seckeyring aso. .

gpg searched at /.gnupgp/ instead of /root/.gnupgp

and what must happen happend , the signing didn't work anymore.
( logical, it didn't find the key anymore ;) ) .

Question is now: Why did it search at /.gnupg/ instead of the before used
/root/.gnupg/ ?

It restarted the TC before without problems from gnupg.
Could it be an export problem of envvars ?

maybe USERNAME?

any suggestions are helpfull...

After this is no output from the jsp, but jasper added an \n output to

The tricky part:

The exception is shown if output TEXT , the TEXT is not outputed.
The exception is NOT SHOWN if i output IMAGE/GIF , but the GIF is!

In both cases the Exception is thrown and logged in stdout.log!

I worked around that problem by outputing texts with out.write() so it does
no longer care, but i think its
a bug in TC..

It's a complex application, i uses perlscript via runtime ,
it makes heavy usage of the connected database and uses a mix of

If you think, we better had put the logic into classes... sorry,

They can. Just install the dbdriver for your database ( i.e. mySQL ),
load the driverManager and connect to your database.

It's suggested to write a class for it instead of using it directly in
a jsp and it's usefull to build a sigletonlike class to controll who and
when a page connects to the database to minimize db accesses and make sure
not
to corrupt your tables with to syncron db accesses. ( a transactionable
table would help too ).

simple :

 response.setHeader(Cache-Control,no-cache);

You can define any header you want... some headers have theire own
methodecalls
like :

 response.setContentType(filter.getType());
 response.setHeader(Content-length,String.valueOf(bytes.length));

 where getType() is just a normal mime-string

AW: Communicating with Tomcat3 through shell scripts.

2002-09-10 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

  We need to disable the user input sometimes and typically we store a
  flag in the session. To modify this flag we use a jsp page.
  If I can communicate with tomcat from shell scripts while it is
  running, I will be able to able to set it up in crontab etc.

Write a framework that can be accessed from outsite and you can do it.
or the easy way : use a mysql connection and check that flag..
or easier : use a property file to store that flag and load it from hd.

To make the flag kown in your whole app , make a bean with app-scope which
every page uses..
this bean can determine if its time to recheck it on hd to minimize a
performance loss.

 What do most people run for production and why? Tomcat

 with Apache? And for that matter, isn't the http server for

 or is it something else?

For help in your decision :

we run our tc standalone because nearly every page handles dynamic content.
just the layout is bases on static files which are included. In case of
using perl we create a new process and let it work for itself.
So WE have no need for Apache. OTHERS may have it while mixing PERL/PHP/JSP
together.

Make clear what you wanne do, and there will be someone with an equal webapp

If someone still uses the mm.mysql2.0.8 jdbc driver (maybe other versions
too),
you will have unwanted output from the driver in your stdout.

class EscapeProcessor
{
.

--- System.out.println(Query is:  + stringbuffer1.toString());
   return stringbuffer1.toString();
}
}

Just remove the marked line...

If you can use it from normal java code, you can use it from jsp,

 Would

 make any sense?

I suggest a small perl script that produces the apps-X.xml files in

You could create/delete your students and courses and just run it to get the
newest working config without
touching server.xml. It can clone the webapps directory of each

Just the restarting would take a while :-))

Hi,

can tomcat swap beans from one application to another if both use the
classes?

If I have a webapp A which granted access to the system and uses a login

the data, does tc accept this bean ( in the same session ) on the webapp B
with same classes?
Or is a new session created if the user switches from one app to another???

 if the class definition is in $TOMCAT_HOME/lib/apps...

 that is just wasted space). The webapps will create two separate instances

 on the same machine where tomcat is installed. Using localhost is 20 times
 slower than using IP address.

names - ip resolves take time . not caching the name - ip result will take
MUCH MORE TIME :))

 Doesnt make a difference if I use Apache/AJP/Tomcat or Direct to
 Tomcat web
 server.

If you had a Unix system i would say your resolve.conf is messed,
normaly a system looks FIRST to your local hosts.conf AND THAN
asks a nameserver for the IP to a given name ( localhost ).

I guess your system asks the nameserver first and looks then locally for
localhost ip. Check your TCP/IP settings .

Hi,

we found out that encodeURL() should not be used for URL for jsp:forward
calls with TC 3.3.x .
It just does not work. I think the forward takes filenames instead of URLs,
right?

Ok, just fine and clear because when the code gets to the forward the
session is already set and the
next codepage is process with the settings from the forwarding code. All
clear.

BTW: Can anyone pls check if his IE does not work with META REFRESH TAGS IF
encodeULR()
was used on the refered page? Mozilla works great for that , but our IE cuts
the ;JSESSIONID... of!
Which of course will loose the session :-)

Maybe someoneelse can recheck it with a different setup. But it worked
as expected. Once i had problems with IE, it did not work until i changed
something else in the IE settings , sorry but i don't remember me exactly.

AW: Tomcat Performance question

2002-07-08 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

 One more point. These servlets must be in a secure environment. They
  use a Thawte certificate for security. I thought Tomcat could be
  configured to use a secure certificate fairly simply, but he says
  otherwise.

Thawte certs can be used with tomcat, just the installation of the cert is
a bit problematic -- http://www.comu.de/docs/tomcat_ssl.htm

 Yes. Anyway I'd suggest to always use Apache as the frontend (handling
 as well the SSL stuff) and then connect tomcat with AJP12/13 to the
 apache.

Maybe I did something wrong with mod_jk but,
since I split Apache from Tomcat again, we got a huge performance increase
on
the tomcat side. Now Apache handles http and Tomcat handles https.
Since our webapp needs secure auth anyway, we use tomcat for the whole
process.
IMHO, noone will run into trouble if he/she uses tomcat without apache.

The only problem i can see is, that tomcat 3.3.x is unable to use different
sslcerts for different vhosts.
Can anyone pls verify this? Or better not ;-))

 I'm unable to use setProperty with any of my beans with tomcat, it worked

 jsp:useBean id=conn class=wiBeans.ConnectionBean scope=session /
 jsp:setProperty name=conn property=username /
 jsp:setProperty name=conn property=password /

misses param=inputnamefromform !

 generates this error message:
 org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Can't find a method to write property
 'username' in a bean of type 'wiBeans.ConnectionBean'

 but in my ConnectionBean class I have the method:
 public void setUsername(String str) {
 username = str;
 }

no parameter could be resulting in an access to
public void setUsername() {}

 the ConnectionBean.class file is placed in
 webapps/wi/WEB-INF/classes/wiBeans

is ok, WEB-INF/classes/ is the correct path , which is added to each webapp
before excuting it.

 them in a HTML page to client. How can I do that?

of course, all you need is a class for handing your databases. make
different instances for different dbs and query them. Or let a
another class do it.. The request should not take too long,
as you have a max. response time für your http request..

expired beans in expired sessions block new sessions? TC 3.3.x

2002-07-02 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

Hi,

i wonder about this behavior:

1. Login in my site via a login bean ( self made )

login.jsp
...
jsp:useBean id=login scope=session class=web.Login/

if (login.valid()) {
%jsp:forward page=prozesse.jsp/%
}
...
login Form  target - login2.jsp
...

This works great as long as the session is valid.

2. The session times out and the login.jsp is forwarded from any page which
detects
that the login is no longer valid.

3. the login pages shows up and I enter the data , but the jsp can't connect
to the database
until the session is directly invalidated with session.invalidate();

4. stdout.log shows this

AW: Tomcat 4 - OpenSSL - IE client certificate works partially

 Betreff: Tomcat 4 - OpenSSL - IE client certificate works partially

 Greetings all...

 For those not interested in client certificates at the deep technical
 level, this is probably not your favorite cup of tea. Otherwise read on.

 Enabling SSL in Tomcat is really no sweat using your own home-made
 certificates, thanks to the excellent HOW-TO. Once you get your root CA
 certificate installed in the right places, and a suitable certificate
 installed in Tomcat, everything works just fine.

 However, creating client certificates that works with IE has (at least for
 me) shown to be a real pain. I've experimented for months, and tried
 numerous postings on this list, but noone seemed to know the
 finer details.
 It was only recently I had a breakthrough, in that a trial
 certificate from
 Verisign allowed me to compare that and a home-made one, and find the bits
 that makes the difference, that is, what it takes for it to be
 shown on the
 selection list in IE when the server asks for a client certificate.
 Last night I succeeded. The right combination of keytool and openssl
 maneuvres to setup a private CA, finally generated a certificate that
 installed without a hitch in IE, and came up when I subsequently connected
 to my SSL enabled Tomcat. So far so good.

 However there is still one major obstacle ... the server aborts the
 connection right away :-

 IE tells me:

 The page cannot be displayed
 The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
 The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties,
 or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

 In other words, the usual message that indicates that the server screwed
 up, and closed the connection.

 Interestingly enough the Verisign certificate works just fine. So there is
 apparently still a difference to Tomcat.
 Have tried to connect using openssl s_client - works A-OK, also with my
 home-made certificate.
 Have looked in the tomcat logs to no avail. There is no trace anywhere why
 the connection breaks.

 So the question to the list is: how would I go by diagnosing this? I
 believe that the problem must be related to the SSL container (?) that
 responds to the traffic on port 443, and does all the SSL handshaking,
 because my application never sees anything.
 Just like in Apache there's an error log for all the pages that fail -
 isn't there such a log in Tomcat?

 Thanks for any input or advice you might have!

 PS. If anyone is interested in a writeup or HOW-TO of making client
 certificates for Tomcat, let me know. This is certainly tricky stuff!

AW: Tomcat performance issues

 Hi All

 I have designed some jsp pages which extract from a database. But
 the pages
 can take upto 5 minutes before they show the content. Is there
 anyway I can
 pinpoit where the bottle neck is. My current settings are APACHE
 +  MOD_jk +
 Tomcat 4.03 (could the bottle neck be my Apache and tomcat
 servers being on
 separate machines?) . Are there any tools that I can use to test the
 performance of my servers?

if you setup mod_jk in an not optimal way, you get long timeouts until,
the page is shown, but 5 minutes is a bit to long.

Our tests here indicate a mass performance speed up, if we don't chain
apache and
tomcat and use tomcat standalone.

AW: How many rows have a ResultSet?

 If you are using JDBC 1.2 you can do it like this (snippet):

 //declare your Statement to return a scroll insensitive result set
 //before you make the query
 stmt = conn.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,
 ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);

 //get the number of rows by scrolling to the last row,
 //getting its number, then returning to the start:
 try {
 resultSet.last();
 numberOfRows = resultSet.getRow();
 resultSet.beforeFirst();
 } catch (Exception e) {
 e.printStackTrace();

This will only work, IF the underlying driver really supports all methods
offered by JDBC. !this is not for sure! - see ORACLE who did not implement
all resultset navigation methods.

 Hi all,

 it might be that I have a security problem and you should tell me if I am
 right.
 Well, I have a server with an ecommerce application: an user can buy

 executes a

 of money
 that the user has to pay.

 Could the user change the sum of money? Is redirect secure?

put the value into an object, serialize it and send the object directly to
the other servers app. at best via SSL, or
encrypt it yourself ( at least the stored informations ).

AW: Security problem?

2002-06-07 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

 This is one way, there are probably others. By using encryption
 you can make
 such a transaction secure.
 If site X is where they buy the thing and site Y is your site:

 You could get site X to pass two things:
 - the amount of money the user is to pay in clear text
 - the amount of money the user is to pay encrypted with the private key of
 site X as a digest.

IMHO, the first step of a cracked key. If you send the encrypted message as
plain text,
you give anyone who tries to crack that key a major hint.

@Laura:

just send the encrypted data, nothing else. Keeps your secret key a secret.
If anyone
tries to change the amount of money , the decrypter can tell you that.

And i suggest to send more encrypted data as you need to send. With this an
attacker can't guess
which of the cracked decrypted data is correct, which makes it harder to a
brute force attack
to get throu, even if the key get cracked by random tries :-)

2002-06-07 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

 In response to M. Schwarz, with public key encryption schemes
 know the clear
 text of really doesn't help very much at cracking the private key. Besides
 which, the user (presumably) knows what the price of the thing
 they are buy
 anyway right? So they know what the cleartext of the message is
 whether it's
 sent with the message or not.
 Although this does bring to my mind a real weakness in my suggestion. Once

no, they know only the price, not the form of the data, which of course
can be different in the encrypted data as in the clear text, which was my
weakness :)

AW: Detect Cookie Rejection

 Does anyone know of a way to detect when cookies are not accepted
 by a browser. My site uses session cookies and I'd like to be
 able to redirect people somewhere to tell them that the site
 requires cookies and what to do to activate them...

An easy way to find out if cookies are enabled AND working is
to set something in a bean scope=session , refresh to a different side
and check if the session.isNew()=true or if the usedbean has reconstructed
( singleton counter )

why?

session.isNew() will allways return true, because the session can't not be
tracked without the cookie
(ofcourse only if you are NOT USEING urlEncode() ) [That's what i learn from
last weeks posting :-)]

Your bean will be constructed because the session is new. new session - new
beans.

Make something out of it.. :)

mod_jk slows down apache 1.3.23

2002-06-04 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

Hi,

I have found that the auto config of tomcat for mod_jk
slows down my apache.

I guess that i did not configure tomcat correctly.

Where should i look for and change things??

mod_jk is working so far, as i can access my apps via normale http urls like
http://domain/application
but no longer via http://domain:8080/application ( which is what i wanted
btw )

tomcat 3.3
apache 1.3.23
Linux

tomcat 3.3 | contexts | sessions

2002-05-31 Thread Power-Netz \(Schwarz\)

JDK 1.4
Tomcat 3.3final
Linux RH7

Hi,

i have two problems with tomcat:

1. i want one application i.e. /datenbank be accessible from only one
virtual host, which is already defined
in httpd.conf ( apache 1.3.23 ) . All other apps should not be accessible,
and! no other vhost should
access /datenbank

2. my tomcat has a problem with session managment. Every click to a URL in
the above app produces one session,
instead of one session for alle jsps in the app. %@ page session=true%
is set in each JSP and session scope for
jsp:usebean .. is set two.

@1:

i tried to make a apps-vhosts.xml, but that ended in the situation that this
vhost could not access any apps, but all
other vhosts could :-) .

@2: before i added the mod_jk stuff to tomcat, tomcat was not able to get
the REMOTE_ADDR/REMOTE_HOST cgi-vars,
they were shown as 127.0.0.1 / localhost

Thx for help...

 For 2:
   - Are cookies enable/disabled ?

as far as i see , yes.. i check the session state with isNew(), and get
everytime the true.

   - Do you use response.encodeUrl() for all links between pages ?

how is it done?
