GNUPG TC , could be OT!
Hi, we have the following constellation: A webapp uses a java class to send emails , this class uses another class to SIGN this email via GNUPG. The host was up for app. 200 days without rebooting and everything worked fine until last friday ( An idiot @ our computer centre switched the machine off :-) ). After rebooting TC did come up as expected but gnupg did not find his config files like the seckeyring aso. . gpg searched at /.gnupgp/ instead of /root/.gnupgp and what must happen happend , the signing didn't work anymore. ( logical, it didn't find the key anymore ;) ) . Question is now: Why did it search at /.gnupg/ instead of the before used /root/.gnupg/ ? It restarted the TC before without problems from gnupg. Could it be an export problem of envvars ? maybe USERNAME? any suggestions are helpfull... AW: Tomcat Performance question
One more point. These servlets must be in a secure environment. They use a Thawte certificate for security. I thought Tomcat could be configured to use a secure certificate fairly simply, but he says otherwise. Thawte certs can be used with tomcat, just the installation of the cert is a bit problematic -- http://www.comu.de/docs/tomcat_ssl.htm Yes. Anyway I'd suggest to always use Apache as the frontend (handling as well the SSL stuff) and then connect tomcat with AJP12/13 to the apache. Maybe I did something wrong with mod_jk but, since I split Apache from Tomcat again, we got a huge performance increase on the tomcat side. Now Apache handles http and Tomcat handles https. Since our webapp needs secure auth anyway, we use tomcat for the whole process. IMHO, noone will run into trouble if he/she uses tomcat without apache. The only problem i can see is, that tomcat 3.3.x is unable to use different sslcerts for different vhosts. Can anyone pls verify this? AW: Tomcat 4 - OpenSSL - IE client certificate works partially
This is the answere: http://www.comu.de/docs/tomcat_ssl.htm and its really easy. -Ursprungliche Nachricht- Von: Henrik Schultz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Gesendet: Montag, 1. Juli 2002 16:43 An: tomcat-user Betreff: Tomcat 4 - OpenSSL - IE client certificate works partially Greetings all... For those not interested in client certificates at the deep technical level, this is probably not your favorite cup of tea. Otherwise read on. Enabling SSL in Tomcat is really no sweat using your own home-made certificates, thanks to the excellent HOW-TO. Once you get your root CA certificate installed in the right places, and a suitable certificate installed in Tomcat, everything works just fine. However, creating client certificates that works with IE has (at least for me) shown to be a real pain. I've experimented for months, and tried numerous postings on this list, but noone seemed to know the finer details. It was only recently I had a breakthrough, in that a trial certificate from Verisign allowed me to compare that and a home-made one, and find the bits that makes the difference, that is, what it takes for it to be shown on the selection list in IE when the server asks for a client certificate. Last night I succeeded. The right combination of keytool and openssl maneuvres to setup a private CA, finally generated a certificate that installed without a hitch in IE, and came up when I subsequently connected to my SSL enabled Tomcat. So far so good. However there is still one major obstacle ... the server aborts the connection right away :- IE tells me: The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. In other words, the usual message that indicates that the server screwed up, and closed the connection. Interestingly enough the Verisign certificate works just fine. So there is apparently still a difference to Tomcat. Have tried to connect using openssl s_client - works A-OK, also with my home-made certificate. Have looked in the tomcat logs to no avail. There is no trace anywhere why the connection breaks. So the question to the list is: how would I go by diagnosing this? I believe that the problem must be related to the SSL container (?) that responds to the traffic on port 443, and does all the SSL handshaking, because my application never sees anything. Just like in Apache there's an error log for all the pages that fail - isn't there such a log in Tomcat? Thanks for any input or advice you might have! PS. If anyone is interested in a writeup or HOW-TO of making client certificates for Tomcat, let me know. This is certainly tricky stuff! AW: Tomcat performance issues
Hi All I have designed some jsp pages which extract from a database. But the pages can take upto 5 minutes before they show the content. Is there anyway I can pinpoit where the bottle neck is. My current settings are APACHE + MOD_jk + Tomcat 4.03 (could the bottle neck be my Apache and tomcat servers being on separate machines?) . Are there any tools that I can use to test the performance of my servers? if you setup mod_jk in an not optimal way, you get long timeouts until, the page is shown, but 5 minutes is a bit to long. Our tests here indicate a mass performance speed up, if we don't chain apache and tomcat and use tomcat standalone. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Tomcat SSL + VHosts was: Apache SSLCERT + Tomcat 3.3 + keytool
and now to MultiDomainVirtuellHosting and SSL with different CERTS :-) To add serveral CERTS to the keyring is not the problem, but to tell Tomcat to use a specific key for a vhost. Is this possible?? I can't see any options for this in the vhost xml directives. If you are using JDBC 1.2 you can do it like this (snippet): //declare your Statement to return a scroll insensitive result set //before you make the query stmt = conn.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE, ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY); //get the number of rows by scrolling to the last row, //getting its number, then returning to the start: try { resultSet.last(); numberOfRows = resultSet.getRow(); resultSet.beforeFirst(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } This will only work, IF the underlying driver really supports all methods offered by JDBC. !this is not for sure! - see ORACLE who did not implement all resultset navigation methods. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all, it might be that I have a security problem and you should tell me if I am right. Well, I have a server with an ecommerce application: an user can buy something a when he has to pay the servlet of the web application executes a redirect to my servlet (in a different server) passing me the sum of money that the user has to pay. Could the user change the sum of money? Is redirect secure? put the value into an object, serialize it and send the object directly to the other servers app. at best via SSL, or encrypt it yourself ( at least the stored informations ). AW: Security problem?
This is one way, there are probably others. By using encryption you can make such a transaction secure. If site X is where they buy the thing and site Y is your site: You could get site X to pass two things: - the amount of money the user is to pay in clear text - the amount of money the user is to pay encrypted with the private key of site X as a digest. IMHO, the first step of a cracked key. If you send the encrypted message as plain text, you give anyone who tries to crack that key a major hint. @Laura: just send the encrypted data, nothing else. Keeps your secret key a secret. If anyone tries to change the amount of money , the decrypter can tell you that. And i suggest to send more encrypted data as you need to send. With this an attacker can't guess which of the cracked decrypted data is correct, which makes it harder to a brute force attack to get throu, even if the key get cracked by random tries :-) M.Schwarz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
AW: Security problem?
In response to M. Schwarz, with public key encryption schemes know the clear text of really doesn't help very much at cracking the private key. Besides which, the user (presumably) knows what the price of the thing they are buy anyway right? So they know what the cleartext of the message is whether it's sent with the message or not. Although this does bring to my mind a real weakness in my suggestion. Once no, they know only the price, not the form of the data, which of course can be different in the encrypted data as in the clear text, which was my weakness :) M.Schwarz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

AW: Detect Cookie Rejection
Does anyone know of a way to detect when cookies are not accepted by a browser. My site uses session cookies and I'd like to be able to redirect people somewhere to tell them that the site requires cookies and what to do to activate them... An easy way to find out if cookies are enabled AND working is to set something in a bean scope=session , refresh to a different side and check if the session.isNew()=true or if the usedbean has reconstructed ( singleton counter ) why? session.isNew() will allways return true, because the session can't not be tracked without the cookie (ofcourse only if you are NOT USEING urlEncode() ) [That's what i learn from last weeks posting :-)] Your bean will be constructed because the session is new. new session - new beans. Make something out of it.. :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

tomcat 3.3 | contexts | sessions
JDK 1.4 Tomcat 3.3final Linux RH7 Hi, i have two problems with tomcat: 1. i want one application i.e. /datenbank be accessible from only one virtual host, which is already defined in httpd.conf ( apache 1.3.23 ) . All other apps should not be accessible, and! no other vhost should access /datenbank 2. my tomcat has a problem with session managment. Every click to a URL in the above app produces one session, instead of one session for alle jsps in the app. %@ page session=true% is set in each JSP and session scope for jsp:usebean .. is set two. @1: i tried to make a apps-vhosts.xml, but that ended in the situation that this vhost could not access any apps, but all other vhosts could :-) . @2: before i added the mod_jk stuff to tomcat, tomcat was not able to get the REMOTE_ADDR/REMOTE_HOST cgi-vars, they were shown as 127.0.0.1 / localhost Thx for help...
