I would like to move the Webapps
from the current default path (CATALINA_HOME\WEBAPPS) to a different path on
a different drive - let's say D:\DATA. I would still prefer to run the
webserver from the default installation directory, as I only want to move
the webapps to serve them from another location. What steps do I need to
take to accomplish this?

Recent spam

2005-05-18 Thread Mark Thomas
All,
Just a quick update on the recent issues.
1. The spam with German subject messages has been blocked by the
infrastructure folks updating the anti-spam rules on the Apache list
servers.

2. The New Atlanta List Server messages were blocked by me as soon as I
saw them (Monday evening UK time). Due to the load on the list servers
the unsubscribe message took about 10 hours to get through and another
10 hours to confirm. Since (as much as I'd like not to have to work for
a living) I don't monitor my Apache e-mail 24x7 it wasn't sometime early
Wednesday morning (UK time) that the messages were finally blocked.

A couple of more general points about spam:
1. Sending messages of the form Is anyone else getting this spam? only
makes matters worse. If you want to check what is appearing on the list,
use one of the list archives available on the web.

2. If you think the list owners haven't noticed a problem, send a
message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Chances are we have
seen the problem and are on the case but an extra heads up never hurt.

Lists hosted by this server are:

 bluedragon-interest

Use one of these list names where you see list name in the command syntax
  below.

All list server commands must be addressed to:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Commands must be placed on the first line of the message body and may not
be preceded by blanks, whitespace, or other characters.

  Valid Commands are:

 To subscribe to a list:

subscribe list name your full name

 For example:

 subscribe servletexec-interest John Smith

If you don't include your name in the subscribe command you'll receive
an Invalid Syntax error message from the list server.

 To unsubscribe from a list:

I changed my Host definition to:

  Host name=localhost appBase=webapps
   unpackWARs=true autoDeploy=true
   antiJarLocking=true antiResourceLocking=true
   xmlValidation=false xmlNamespaceAware=false

No change. I use an ant script to war up mywebapp and copy it under
tomcat. The very first time I do this everything works fine. The second
time I try to deploy my war file Tomcat complains that it cannot find
the web.xml file. (I am tailing my stdout file).

Any clues?

Most likely a jar or resource file is locked, and tomcat cannot undeploy
the last app. Try turning on antiJarLocking and antiResourceLocking.

Hi,

From what I understand if I want a webapp to be auto deployed from a war
file under tomcat I should have the following:

  Host name=localhost appBase=webapps
   unpackWARs=true autoDeploy=true
   xmlValidation=false xmlNamespaceAware=false
...
...
/Host

The problem is that when I copy a new mywebapp.war file in to tomcat I
see a half exploded Or deleted mywebapp folder. By this I mean that the
mywebapp folder contains only certain folders and files.

Any clues as to why this maybe happening? Is tomcat holding on to some
jar files because some objects are being refrenced still or something
like that? I am guessing here wildly because I cant seem to resolve this
issue. What am I missing?

Thanks

Well, that is something that you will have to live with.
I've even received a couple of emails where people even
threaten me with the FBI, because they where receiving commit
messages from Tomcat cvs on emails like [EMAIL PROTECTED]
that some of their coworker used to subscribe to Tomcat list.
So I know at least couple of guys that are fighting those
kind of messages on a daily basis, to actually search and
destroy all those stupid users setting autoresponders,

Since those guys needs to get some sleep now and then,

So use an NNTP interface to the list, like I'm doing (on

Someone has just very annoyingly subscribed to the tomcat-users list
with an email address that has an autoresponder set on it, not SPAM at
all but still annoying.

There was some SPAM though ocassionally from some webmaster or
something that replied like 10 times to some messages, haven't seen
that for a few days though.

I got a bunch of them from my first post and it said time to go or some
nonsense in the body text as well. I tried to reply to the guy directly
but it bounced, so I reported it to Apache/Jakarta. They responded within
24 hours, and since then, I haven't gotten any more...

Forward it to the powers that be at Apache.

RE: [SPAM] - RE: I need a pointer about persistent info for my servlet, please - Email has different SMTP TO: and MIME TO: fields in the email addresses

2004-07-15 Thread Bret Waldow
Yes, we are currently using Tomcat 5. In fairly short order, we will be
turning what we are writing into an SOA implementation, and I haven't
gone far enough yet to know if we can still use Tomcat 5 with Axis, or
if we need to shift back to Tomcat 4. Of course, we also intend to be
deployable on anyone's existing server setup, if it meets standards.

Your suggestion makes sense, and thanks for the idea. I would still
like to hear what the canonical way to persist data for a servlet -
outside of the servlet .WAR file - is. Is there one for Tomcat? I'm
assuming that someone else besides us might have this need, I just can't
find anything definitive in the documentation or Google yet.

Bret

Bret,

Two questions:
1) Are you using Tomcat 5?
2) If so are you using the Tomcat-Deployer to deploy your application?

If you answer yes to both, then this is probably a good foundation for a
solution to your problem. Let me explain.

The Tomcat deployer uses an Ant script and a associated properties file
to take your war file (in unzipped format) compile it and then deploy it
to Tomcat.

We made some simple modificaitons to Tomcat-Deployer build.xml script
and deployer.properties file to do additional customization
before/during the JSP compilation process. The customization we do
sounds similar to what you want to do - set directory names, links, etc.
custom for that site/customer.

The Ant build.xml would be customized just once and work everywhere. The
properties in deployer.properties (or an alternate properties file of
your choosing) would be customized once for each customer/site. Then
each time you installed an updated war file the prior customizations
would be remembered so to speak.

Hope that was clear and it helps.

Even if you are not using Tomcat, a similar approach should work with
other App servers. Using an Ant script to unzip, customize and then
rejar the webapp should be pretty straightforward.

Subject: I need a pointer about persistent info for my servlet, please

We are deploying a servlet front end to an existing application. When
the application is installed, the user picks some parameters, like the
install directory, that aren't known to us when we make the .WAR file we
deploy from.

However, our servlet needs to know this, and it needs to know it in a
way that survives redeployment of the servlet from the .WAR file - so I
can't put it into the WEB-INF/web.xml file, as this will be overwritten
when the servlet is redeployed in Tomcat.

During product installation, where can I write the information the user
chooses so that it will always be available to our servlet? (And in
what form, please?)

I've read about a tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/servletname.xml file,
but I have only seen the examples for the built-in Tomcat apps, and
those don't show examples of param...something for me to use.

Can anyone point me to something that I can use for this?

Thanks,

Bret

Does the app otherwise use a database?
If so, it'd be nothing to put the info in an extra table somewhere.

I don't think there's such a thing as a canonical/portable way for
this: webapps are supposed to be self-contained, somewhat sealed
products (as far as on-disk files).

The plus side is, this leaves plenty of room for creative solutions.

Spam on tomcat-user?

2004-03-07 Thread Rhino
I mailed a note to tomcat-user a little while ago and got this reply within
a few minutes; it uses my subject line but the body of the note is some spam
about Harry Potter, in German.

My guess is that someone has a program monitoring the mailing list which
sends out a piece of spam every time someone sends a note to the list. I've
got a good firewall and I'm very careful about opening attachments so I'm
fairly sure this didn't originate with any virus at my end.

I don't know if there is anything the list administrators can do about this
but I'd like to let them know about this. What's the best way to do that?

Rhino,

Thought I would test your theory here as well as throw in my own. Mandrake
is a root that was used in the Harry Potter series. It may be that your
email was harvested because of the relation. Unless someone has just set
this up I haven't had any issues in the past, other than some virus junk.

Also it helps if you pull the header info from the email so if this is true,
it will give the list admin a better shot at finding a match. The only thing
you can trust in the header to be accurate is the IP. Everything else can be

Hmm, how do I get the full headers? I'm using Outlook Express 6.0 on
Windows
XP. I just checked the Help and their idea of seeing the full headers is
displaying the From address, the Date, Subject and the To address. I've
seen
the headers you mean in the past when I had Netscape installed but don't
know how to get them in Outlook Express

By the way, I got the same piece of spam when I posted my note about the
spam and expect to get it again when I hit Send on this note.

  Rhino,

Thought I would test your theory here as well as throw in my own.
Mandrake
is a root that was used in the Harry Potter series. It may be that your
email was harvested because of the relation. Unless someone has just set
this up I haven't had any issues in the past, other than some virus
junk.

Also it helps if you pull the header info from the email so if this is
 true,
it will give the list admin a better shot at finding a match. The only
 thing
you can trust in the header to be accurate is the IP. Everything else
can
 be
  forged.

I mailed a note to tomcat-user a little while ago and got this reply
  within
a few minutes; it uses my subject line but the body of the note is
some
  spam
   about Harry Potter, in German.

My guess is that someone has a program monitoring the mailing list
which
sends out a piece of spam every time someone sends a note to the list.
  I've
got a good firewall and I'm very careful about opening attachments so
 I'm
fairly sure this didn't originate with any virus at my end.

I don't know if there is anything the list administrators can do about
  this
but I'd like to let them know about this. What's the best way to do
 that?

Are you sure you meant httpd1?

The daemon script on my site is httpd.

The website explains a setup for Tomcat 4, not Tomcat 5. I don't know

there's any difference, but there may be.

I'm also confused as you apparently didn't copy your configuration into

Nobody on this list is obliged to answer any questions. Attempting to

In answer to your question, the best approach would be check first that
you are not abusing any singletons, static methods or member variables

Then you should set up tests using one of the testing frameworks

Hi -

AFAIK, Tomcat never reads workers.properties, only mod_jk reads
workers.properties.

If you use the auto-generation, your worker will always be named ajp13. If
you need something else, you need to configure things manually. The
ApacheConfig classes are a convenience, not a requirement, and could easily
go away in the future (they're not even used for JK2 which is where the
current dev efforts are).

The complaints you are getting when you change or remove workers.properties
are from Apache and mod_jk, not Tomcat.

On Fri, 20 Jun 2003 11:15:59 -0400, Dave Naden [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 When I auto-generate the mod_jk directives, I'm finding strange
 behavior:
Even if my workers.properties file contains the name of a worker other
than ajp13, the JkMount commands that get generated always have the
 worker name as ajp13.
for example, if I put the following in my workers.properties:

 worker.list=testWorker1
 # settings for testWorker1
 worker.testWorker1.port=8009 worker.testWorker1.host=localhost
 worker.testWorker1.type=ajp13

I'll still get, in the auto file, lines like:

 JkMount /examples/jsp/security/protected/j_security_check ajp13
 JkMount /examples/snoop ajp13 JkMount /examples/servlet/* ajp13
 JkMount /examples/CompressionTest ajp13
 JkMount /examples/*.jsp ajp13
 JkMount /examples/servletToJsp ajp13

 ...etc.

even though I'm naming the worker 'testWorker1'

I know Tomcat is reading the correct workers.properties file, because
when I remove it, Tomcat complains.

 BTW, here's my location directive:

 Listener className=org.apache.ajp.tomcat4.config.ApacheConfig
 modJk=c:/Apache2/modules/mod_jk-2.0.42.dll  /

 Anybody know what's going on?

For an NT service to be able to access files across the network it must run
under an account with network privileges, by default the LocalSystem account
is used which doesn't have any network privileges.

Most people choose to create a new network account with privileges restricted
to solely what they require and then run the NT service using that account.

don't use the mapped drive name. Use it's unc name.
If your mapped drive is G:\ and it's mapped to
someDir on someServer, refer to it as \\someServer\someDir.

Hi,

I am using the java.io.File class to get a list of all the files in a
directory. If the directory I am trying to read is a local one, all is fine
and good. However, if it is a mapped drive (I am using Win2k) then the
class can not see it. I ran the same code reading the mapped drive in
command window (java myclass) and it is fine.

Is there a setting in Tomcat that I have to set so that I can read a mapped
drive?

I am using Tc 4.0.2

Thanks.

I also just found out that if I have any other file that I have to read in

This must be some setting in Tomcat. Any comment? Idea?

Are you running Tomcat from a command line, or as a service?

If Tomcat is running as a service, what user is it running as?

2001-11-13 Thread Jan Lange

So I defined a Log File for mod_jk Log-Entries.

Every 3 seconds, I get Log-entries with worker mappings

Can help me anybody?
